Chapter 2

The messenger arrived at dawn, his breath still visible in the cool morning air as he handed me the sealed response from Alpha Elliot Austin. I recognized the Crescent Moon Pack's emblem pressed into the dark blue wax—a wolf howling beneath a crescent moon.

"Alpha Elliot requests an immediate meeting to discuss your proposal, Luna Nia," the young wolf said, his eyes wide with respect. "He's offered the use of our pack's ceremonial grounds for the Moonrise Ceremony."

I broke the seal, my fingers trembling slightly as I unrolled the parchment. Elliot's handwriting was bold, confident strokes that seemed to dance across the page.

"Luna Nia," it began, "Your proposal for the Moonrise Ceremony alliance honors our pack beyond measure. I would be privileged to partner with you in this sacred tradition."

Nova stirred within me, her curiosity piqued. *He didn't question your authority.*

"Furthermore," I read aloud, "I offer the use of our eastern hunting grounds as a gesture of goodwill between our packs. These territories have remained untouched since my father's time."

I exhaled slowly. The eastern grounds were prime hunting territory—rich with game and protected by natural barriers. Offering them for even temporary use during the ceremony was no small gesture.

"He's either very wise or very reckless," I murmured to Nova.

*Or he sees your worth,* she replied.

---

The formal meeting was set for three days later at the neutral border between our territories. I arrived with my Beta and two senior Delta wolves, all dressed in Silverstone's formal attire—silver and blue robes that marked our pack status.

Elliot was already waiting, standing tall beside his Beta, Marcus Thompson. Unlike James, who often used his physical presence to intimidate, Elliot's confidence seemed to come from elsewhere—a quiet assurance that didn't require posturing.

"Luna Nia," he greeted me with a respectful bow that stopped just short of submission. "Thank you for honoring us with this alliance."

His eyes met mine directly—something few Alphas did with me anymore. They were warm amber, flecked with gold that caught the sunlight.

"Alpha Elliot," I replied, inclining my head slightly. "Your generous offer of the eastern grounds is greatly appreciated."

"We have much to discuss," he said, gesturing toward the meeting tent that had been erected. "I've brought the ceremonial texts from our archives. Perhaps we could review them together?"

For the next three hours, we pored over ancient rituals and territorial agreements. Elliot listened more than he spoke, asking thoughtful questions that showed he'd done his research.

"You know the old texts better than most Alphas I've met," I observed as we reached the section on moon blessings.

He smiled, a genuine expression that reached his eyes. "I believe traditions matter, Luna Nia. They connect us to who we are as wolves."

The contrast to James's dismissal of "outdated ceremonies" couldn't have been starker.

---

The Inter-Pack Council chamber buzzed with excitement when Victoria Sterling, the respected Elder, announced the official formation of the Moonrise Alliance between Silverstone and Crescent Moon Packs.

"This alliance," she declared, her voice carrying to every corner of the grand hall, "marks a new era of cooperation between two of our strongest packs."

I stood beside Elliot, our pack symbols displayed behind us on the ceremonial banners. From the corner of my eye, I could see James in the audience, his jaw clenched tight enough to crack stone.

"The ceremonial preparations will begin immediately," Victoria continued, "with Luna Nia Weaver overseeing all ritual aspects."

Pack leaders from across the region nodded in approval. Many had worked with me before on previous ceremonies, and their support was immediate and vocal.

"Luna Nia's knowledge of pack law and ceremony is unmatched," Alpha Reyes of the Northern Ridge Pack called out. "This alliance is fortunate to have her leadership."

I caught James's expression darken further. The territorial agreements had been finalized without his direct involvement—a fact that hadn't escaped his notice.

---

"You went behind my back."

James's voice was deceptively calm as he poured wine into crystal glasses that evening. We sat in his private dining room, the table between us feeling wider than the territorial boundaries we'd just renegotiated.

"I exercised my authority as Luna," I replied evenly, accepting the glass he offered. "The ceremony had been postponed for too long."

"The eastern grounds are prime hunting territory," he said, his knuckles whitening around his glass. "You had no right to negotiate their use without my approval."

I set my glass down carefully. "As Luna, I have every right to oversee ceremonial arrangements. Including territorial usage for sacred rites."

His eyes flashed with Alpha power, and his voice dropped into the commanding tone that had made lesser wolves tremble. "You will cancel this alliance, Nia. Tonight."

"No."

The single word hung between us like a blade.

I reached into my robe and withdrew a small folder. "Before you continue, you might want to see these."

I placed several sheets of paper on the table between us. Printed transcripts of the mind-link communications between James and Liliana.

James stared at them, his face draining of color.

"Tell me, Alpha," I said softly, my Luna composure perfect despite the storm raging within, "how do you justify betraying your mate while demanding loyalty from others?"
