Chapter 2

The courtyard reeked of fear and sweat.

Lykos's gaze didn't leave Alpha Varun, who stood smirking like a predator savoring a kill. His pack's wolves pressed close behind him, teeth bared, claws scraping the ground. The moonlight painted everything silver and sharp-perfect for a fight, perfect for death.

But Lykos didn't flinch. Not once.

Aria's small, trembling form pressed against his chest, her fingers gripping the fabric of his shirt. Even now, after everything, she had enough strength to cling to him.

"Give her to me," Varun repeated, voice low and dangerous. "She is mine by right of the Moon Well prophecy. Step aside, Untouchable, and I might let you live."

Lykos didn't move. He didn't need to. The weight of centuries of blood and survival pressed into his bones. He had faced enemies before-wolves, witches, traitors-but never a situation like this. His mate... his impossible, fragile, alive mate-was on the line. And he would burn the world down before losing her.

"Lykos," Aria whispered, voice barely audible. "Please..."

He pressed a finger to her lips, stopping her. His eyes, dark and stormy, swept over the courtyard. Every soldier, every Beta, every pack member had frozen in place, staring in awe and terror. No one dared intervene. None of them understood what was happening, or what he had just endured when she touched him.

Varun chuckled, slow and cruel. "What's the matter, Untouchable? Afraid of a few pups?"

Lykos's hands clenched into fists, nails digging into his palms. "Step closer," he said, voice low and lethal. "One step. And I'll show you what an Untouchable Alpha really does."

Varun tilted his head, his grin widening. "Bold words. Bold... but useless. Your curse isn't your own to command. You know what will happen if you touch her, don't you? She dies. And that's why you won't fight."

Lykos's jaw tightened. That was exactly it. He shouldn't touch her. He couldn't. And yet... she was alive. She was alive.

Something flickered inside him-a dangerous thought. A forbidden one.

She survived. I can protect her.

But not like this. Not here. Not surrounded by enemy wolves.

He let out a low growl, one that vibrated deep from his chest. His wolf surged, furious, wild. He needed a plan. Fast.

"You think you can take her?" Lykos said, voice low, each word sharpened like steel. "Try me, and you'll regret it."

Varun's grin never faltered. "You won't strike me. You can't. Not with her here. You can't risk... killing your mate before you even know what she is."

Lykos froze. His wolf snarled.

Mate.

Varun knew.

The enemy Alpha had figured it out already.

The thought made Lykos's blood run cold.

He had underestimated the depth of this danger. Aria wasn't just someone who survived his cursed touch-she was someone everyone in the region wanted. And that meant every Alpha, every witch, every shadow hunter who had ever heard the prophecy would come after her.

He had to move.

And fast.

"Varun," Lykos said slowly, deliberately. "You want her? You want a fight? You want blood?"

Varun's grin widened. "Yes. All of it."

Lykos's wolf howled, low and terrifying.

Then, without another word, he scooped Aria into his arms and ran.

The courtyard erupted into chaos. Shouts, snarls, claws against stone. Lykos moved like lightning through the gates, past startled guards, past terrified pack members who couldn't understand the urgency of his actions.

The enemy wolves lunged. Teeth snapped. Claws tore at the air.

But Lykos was faster. Stronger. Unstoppable.

Every step pushed him further from safety and closer into the unknown.

Aria's grip on him tightened, her small hands clutching his neck. Her voice trembled, half-whispering, half-sobbing.

"I... I don't understand... Why... Why can I touch you and not die?"

He exhaled slowly, running through the forest at a speed that blurred the trees into streaks of silver and black.

"I don't know," he admitted, his voice low, pained. "But I will find out."

Her head tilted against his chest. She whispered, "Please... don't let them take me."

"You won't," he said, almost fiercely, almost desperately. "I promise you, Aria, no one will touch you. Not while I'm alive. Not while I still breathe."

The moon broke through the clouds suddenly, illuminating the forest path. Lykos's wolf senses flared. There was movement ahead-more wolves. But these weren't the enemy. These were his pack.

He slowed, finally bringing them to a hidden grove he used for emergencies. It was a place even Varun's spies wouldn't know.

Aria sagged in his arms, exhausted beyond belief. Her breathing was shallow, her skin pale. Lykos set her down gently on a thick bed of moss, brushing dirt from her hair.

"Rest," he said. "You need it."

She shivered, hugging herself. "I... I don't know who I am..."

"You'll remember," he promised. "All of it. Eventually. But right now... survive."

The wind shifted again, carrying a faint, almost musical whisper. It was faint, but Lykos recognized it-the scent of ancient magic.

The Moon Well.

He froze, eyes narrowing.

It wasn't just Varun chasing her. There was something more. Something older. Something darker.

And it wanted her.

Aria's eyes widened as she noticed the shift in his posture. "Lykos... what is it?"

"They're not just after you," he said slowly, voice sharp as a blade. "You're... important. More than you know. And if they catch you..."

His voice dropped to a near whisper. "...you'll die. Or worse."

Aria's hand reached for him, weak but insistent. "Then... stay with me. Please. I-I'm scared."

He shook his head. "I won't let anyone touch you. Not now. Not ever."

Her fingers brushed against his arm again. And again, nothing happened.

But something changed. A faint pulse of silver light shimmered under her skin, stronger this time, as if responding to him.

Lykos's heart thudded hard in his chest.

She was different. He could feel it. He could feel them.

The bond.

A howl broke the night-a deep, commanding sound. Not Varun's. Not his pack. Something else.

Something that made the forest tremble.

Aria gasped, clutching his shirt. "What... what was that?"

Before Lykos could answer, the ground beneath them vibrated violently. Roots snapped. Moss tore. A shadow larger than any wolf emerged from the treeline-towering, black, eyes burning like coals.

And then he recognized it.

The Curse Keeper.

The witch who had cursed him from birth.

Her voice echoed, low and cruel. "So... he has found you. The untouchable one."

Lykos's blood ran cold.

She stepped forward, staff in hand, a silver crystal glinting at the top. Magic crackled in the air, thick and dangerous.

"I see... the prophecy moves faster than expected," she said, eyes narrowing on Aria. "The borrowed life... the stolen soul... you will all pay for interfering with fate."

Aria shrank behind him, terrified. "Lykos... what do we do?"

He drew a deep breath, wolf snarling in his chest. "We fight," he said, low and steady.

But even as he said it, he knew the truth.

He couldn't touch her.

He couldn't let her die.

And yet... he had no choice but to face a witch whose power rivaled his own and who had already twisted his cursed life into a weapon.

"Stay behind me," he growled. "No one touches her. No one."

The Curse Keeper laughed. Cold. Terrifying. "Oh, Alpha Lykos... how I've waited for this moment."

Lightning arced from her staff, illuminating the forest in a brilliant flash. Aria screamed.

Lykos lunged, protecting her. His claws slashed the air, silver lightning crackling between him and her danger.

But the witch moved faster. Much faster.

And then-

Everything went black.
