For His First Love's Leg, the Alpha Stripped Me of My Right to Be a Mother

A seven-year-old's innocent question shatters a Luna's fragile peace: why does his mother still have two legs while Vanessa relearns to walk? Hours earlier, she lost both her baby and her womb to hemorrhaging. Damon, the Alpha she loved, had chosen to administer the pack's sole Moon Regeneration Serum to Vanessa's minor injury instead of saving their dying child. When leaked records expose Vanessa's pain as fabricated, the Luna's grief ignites into quiet fury. Leaving her Luna ring behind, she vanishes from pack territory, stripped of motherhood and bound to a future stolen for a lie.

Chapter 5

By the time Damon brought Vanessa home, my suitcase was packed.

I had taken only what belonged to me before the mating: two changes of clothes, my passport, a small envelope of cash, and the silver folding knife my father gave me when I first learned to shift. I left the jewelry Damon bought me in its velvet boxes. I left the Luna crest on the dresser.

Most of all, I left the nursery untouched.

The door stood open across the hall. A half-built crib waited against the wall beneath a row of paper stars. Damon and I had argued about the paint two weeks before the crash. He wanted blue. I wanted a soft green that would work no matter whether the baby was a boy or girl.

We had never finished deciding.

Now there was nothing to decide.

Voices drifted up from downstairs.

"Careful," Damon said. "Take the railing."

Vanessa laughed softly. "I'm not made of glass."

"Your stitches are fresh."

Noah shouted, "I put your favorite blanket in the guest room!"

I closed the nursery door.

Damon found me in the master bedroom ten minutes later.

"What are you doing?"

His gaze fixed on the suitcase.

"Leaving."

He shut the bedroom door behind him. "You're not cleared to travel."

"I'm not asking permission."

"Aria, this is not the time to make a permanent decision. You're grieving, you're medicated, and you're angry."

"I'm clear enough to know your ex-girlfriend is downstairs in my house less than forty-eight hours after our child died."

"Her apartment isn't accessible. This is temporary."

"Everything with Vanessa is temporary until it becomes permanent."

He dragged both hands over his face. "I confronted Evans."

I waited.

"He admitted the original assessment showed no amputation risk. He says Vanessa told him she had lost sensation after the scan and demanded another surgical consult."

"And?"

"I'm suspending him pending a council investigation."

"Congratulations."

"Don't do that."

"Do what? Refuse to applaud after you discover the truth one day too late?"

Damon stepped closer. "I was deceived."

"You were willing to be deceived."

His mouth tightened.

"I loved you," I said. "That made me overlook a lot. Your history with her. The way the elders treated Noah like a political asset. The fact that Vanessa could call and you would leave dinner, meetings, even our bed because she claimed your son needed something. I told myself it was because you were a good father."

"I am a good father."

"Maybe. But you stopped being a good mate a long time ago."

He saw the papers on the dresser.

His face changed.

"What is that?"

"My rejection."

He crossed the room in two strides and snatched them up.

The legal separation filing was beneath the ritual document, but he did not look at it. His eyes went straight to my signature on the mate-severance consent.

"No."

"It's done."

"It requires both signatures."

"Not after reckless endangerment of a bonded mate. My attorney filed the medical petition this morning. The High Council witness approved unilateral severance."

Gold flashed in his eyes.

"You planned this before the crash?"

"I had divorce papers drafted because I was tired of competing with Vanessa. I didn't decide to use them until you gave her my child's medicine."

"You can't sever while you're this weak. The backlash could kill you."

"Then I die free."

His face went white.

"Don't say that."

A knock sounded at the bedroom door.

Noah pushed it open before Damon answered.

"Dad, Aunt Vanessa wants -" He saw the suitcase and stopped. "Where are you going, Mom?"

I looked at him for a long moment.

"Away."

His eyes widened. "Because I showed you the video?"

"Because this house is no longer my home."

"But you live here."

"Not anymore."

He looked at Damon for help.

Damon stepped between me and the door. "No one is leaving tonight. We are all exhausted. We will talk tomorrow."

Downstairs, a suitcase rolled across the foyer. Vanessa called for Damon to help with a zipper. The sound traveled cleanly up the staircase. Noah hovered in the doorway, looking from my packed case to his father's face.

"Is Aunt Vanessa really staying here?" he asked.

Damon hesitated. "For a few days."

I almost smiled. A few days. The same phrase he had used when Vanessa first returned to the territory, when her legal dispute lasted three months, when Noah's school emergency became a weekend at our estate. Every boundary had entered our marriage disguised as something temporary.

I also removed the Luna seal from my phone and left it on the dresser. Without that authentication key, I could no longer authorize pack accounts, summon guards, or access the estate security system. The loss should have felt frightening. Instead, it felt like setting down a weight I had carried so long I had forgotten it was heavy.

I picked up my coat.

"Aria," Damon said. "If you leave tonight, where will you even go?"

"Somewhere my pain is not treated as the price of keeping everyone else comfortable."

He had no answer.

I reached beneath my collar and pulled out the thin silver chain that held my mate token.

Damon's breath caught.

"Aria."

I snapped the chain.

The ritual words were simple.

"I, Aria Vale, reject Damon Thorne as my mate and release every claim his bond holds over me."

Pain exploded through my chest.

Damon doubled over as if something had struck him from inside. Noah screamed. Somewhere downstairs, Vanessa called his name.

I gripped the dresser until the first wave passed.

Then I placed the broken token beside the unsigned divorce papers.

"I had already texted Rachel the departure time and the license plate. If anyone tried to stop me at the gate, the Border Court would receive the security footage automatically. For once, I had planned for Damon's authority instead of trusting it.

The car at the east gate is mine," I said. "Do not follow me."

Damon lifted his head, horror in his eyes.

I took my suitcase and walked out while he was still on his knees.
