Chapter 2

The world spun in slow motion as I lay at the bottom of the embankment, pain radiating through every inch of my body. Above me, voices shouted in panic, but all I could focus on was the searing agony in my abdomen. My ninth pup—the only one left—was in danger.

"Stay still," Luna urged inside me. "Protect the pup."

Suddenly, a massive silver wolf burst through the trees, his powerful form cutting through the chaos. Augustus Gardner, Beta of the Nightstone Pack. He wasn't supposed to be here—this was Shadowridge territory.

He shifted instantly, his silver fur giving way to the imposing figure of a man. Without hesitation, he knelt beside me, his nostrils flaring as he inhaled deeply.

"Wolfsbane," he muttered, his voice low and urgent. "I can smell it beneath your injuries."

His eyes met mine, and something passed between us—recognition, understanding. I'd known Augustus since childhood, when he served as my father's Beta. But now, in this moment of crisis, I saw something different in his gaze.

"Augustus," I whispered, my voice breaking. "They're trying to kill me. Again."

He nodded once, his jaw tightening. Before I could say more, he stood and faced the gathering crowd of Shadowridge wolves.

"As Beta of the allied Nightstone Pack," he announced, his voice carrying the weight of authority, "I'm taking Elena Collins to our healer for specialized treatment."

Nolan pushed through the crowd, his face a mask of concern that didn't reach his eyes. "That's not necessary. Our pack hospital—"

"Is not equipped for wolfsbane poisoning," Augustus cut him off, his tone leaving no room for argument. He physically blocked Nolan's approach, his broad shoulders forming a barrier between us.

I watched Nolan's expression flicker—frustration, anger, and beneath it all, fear. He knew what Augustus was implying.

"Augustus," I pleaded softly, "please."

Something in my voice must have reached him. Without another word, he scooped me into his arms and headed toward the forest edge where a Nightstone vehicle waited.

---

The healing room in Nightstone territory was unlike anything in Shadowridge. Sunlight streamed through large windows, illuminating herbs and healing crystals arranged on shelves along the walls. But all I could focus on was the elderly woman examining me with gentle hands.

"Remarkable," Thalia murmured, her fingers tracing the barely visible veins of wolfsbane poisoning on my wrist. "The fall should have killed you both."

"Both?" I echoed, my heart stopping.

She smiled gently. "Your pup, child. He's alive."

A sob escaped me before I could stop it. "My baby survived?"

"Thanks to Augustus's quick thinking," Thalia confirmed. "He administered the counter-agent immediately when he found you. But..." Her expression grew serious. "The wolfsbane exposure was significant. This wasn't an accident, was it?"

I shook my head, tears flowing freely now. "They've been poisoning me for years. All my pregnancies... eight pups gone..."

Augustus stood by the window, his back to me, shoulders rigid with tension. When he turned, his eyes glowed with a silver-blue light that took my breath away.

"I've suspected something was wrong," he admitted quietly. "But I couldn't prove it."

Luna stirred within me, suddenly alert. "Look at him," she whispered. "Really look."

For the first time, I noticed the way Augustus's wolf responded to mine—how his scent seemed to call to something deep inside me. Not the artificial pull I'd felt with Nolan, but something primal and true.

"Elena," Augustus said softly, crossing the room to kneel beside my bed. "What they've done to you... I'm so sorry."

The dam broke inside me. Years of grief, betrayal, and rage poured out as I collapsed into his arms. He held me tightly, his heartbeat steady against my ear.

"I don't know what to do," I confessed between sobs. "They'll never stop."

Augustus's arms tightened around me. "We'll make them stop."

---

Three days passed in a blur of planning and healing. My body recovered quickly under Thalia's care, but my mind raced with possibilities and dangers.

"We need evidence," Augustus insisted as we sat in the secure room he'd prepared for me. "Pack law would favor Nolan's word over yours—especially if they claim you're hysterical with pregnancy hormones."

I nodded grimly. "They'd say I imagined everything."

Augustus spread a map of Shadowridge territory on the table between us. "The diplomatic visit next week provides our opportunity. I can install recording devices in their main buildings while distracting Nolan with alliance discussions."

"Then we make me disappear," I said, the words tasting bitter on my tongue. "Let them think they've won."

Augustus's eyes met mine, concern evident in their depths. "It's dangerous, Elena. If they discover you're alive before we have enough evidence..."

"They won't," I promised, a new steel entering my voice. "I've survived them nine times already."

As we finalized our plans, Luna stirred restlessly within me. "He's our true mate," she whispered. "Not Nolan. Never Nolan."

I glanced at Augustus, noting how his wolf responded to mine, how naturally he protected me without trying to control me. For the first time since discovering the betrayal, hope flickered in my chest—dangerous, fragile hope for a future I'd thought impossible.

But first, I had to let Nolan believe he'd finally won.
