Chapter 5

I drove to the cabin the next morning.

No announcement. No explanation. I just packed a small bag, left a note for Kenna on the desk, and got in my car. The lakeside property was in neutral territory, a two-hour drive north. I'd bought it years ago with money from my own family, before I ever became Luna. It was mine. Untouched by Conrad. Untouched by the pack.

I needed that.

The drive was quiet. I kept the radio off. My wolf was restless, pacing in circles inside my chest. The bond with Conrad felt like a dead weight, pulling at something vital. The mind-link was still severed, but the mark on my neck throbbed dully, a constant reminder of what I was still tied to.

I pulled into the cabin driveway just after noon. The place was small. One bedroom. A kitchen. A living room with wide windows overlooking the lake. The water was calm, reflecting the gray sky like glass.

I unlocked the door and stepped inside. The air smelled like wood and dust. I opened the windows to let it breathe, then unpacked my bag in silence. Clothes in the dresser. Toiletries in the bathroom. Journal on the nightstand.

Then I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall.

I'd come here to think. To plan. To breathe without the pack house pressing down on me.

But all I felt was hollow.

That evening, I walked down to the dock.

The sun was setting, painting the lake in shades of amber and rose. I sat at the edge, my legs dangling over the water, and watched the light fade. The air was cool. Quiet. The only sound was the soft lap of waves against the wooden posts.

I closed my eyes and tried to empty my mind.

Then the scent hit me.

Cedar and winter rain.

It rolled over me like weather—thick, consuming, saturating the air until I couldn't breathe anything else. My wolf surged forward with a ferocity I had never experienced. Not with Conrad. Not ever. It wasn't a gentle pull. It was a command. A certainty. A single word reverberating through my consciousness like a bell.

*Mate.*

My eyes snapped open.

Cassius stood at the edge of the tree line, maybe twenty feet away. He was in civilian clothes—dark jeans, a simple shirt—no Delta uniform. His hands were at his sides. He wasn't moving. Just standing there, watching me.

Our eyes met across the water.

The pull hit me in the chest. It was nothing like the manufactured warmth I remembered from Conrad. This was gravitational. Bone-deep. Electric. Like every cell in my body had been recalibrated toward a single point.

I stood slowly. My legs felt unsteady. My wolf was snarling and whimpering at the same time, torn between the instinct to run toward him and the terror of what that meant.

"What are you doing here?" My voice came out rougher than I intended.

Cassius didn't answer right away. He took a step forward, then another, closing the distance between us with careful, deliberate movements. Like he was approaching something wild.

When he was close enough that I could see the gold flecks in his dark eyes, he stopped.

"I followed your scent," he said quietly. His voice was low. Steady. "I couldn't stay away."

I should have been angry. I should have demanded to know how he found me. I should have sent him away.

But my wolf was screaming.

And I was so tired of fighting.

"Cassius," I said. His name felt strange on my tongue. Intimate. "I can't—"

"I know," he interrupted. He took one more step, close enough now that I could feel the heat of him. "I know what you're going through. I know you're bonded to someone else. I know I shouldn't be here."

"Then why are you?"

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he said, very simply, "Because you're mine."

The words hit me like a physical blow. My wolf howled in recognition. The bond—the real one, the one the Moon Goddess had written—snapped into place so hard I gasped.

Cassius reached for me. His hand cupped the side of my face, his thumb brushing against my cheekbone. The touch was gentle. Reverent.

"Tell me to leave," he said. His voice was rough now, strained. "Tell me to go and I will. But if you don't—"

I kissed him.

It wasn't a decision. It was instinct. My hands fisted in his shirt and I pulled him down to me, and the moment our lips met, the world tilted.

The kiss was nothing like anything I'd ever experienced with Conrad. It was raw. Consuming. Saturated with a scent-chemistry so real it made three years with Conrad feel like a photocopy of something genuine.

Cassius's arms came around me, pulling me against him, and I felt his wolf rise to meet mine. The bond between us flared bright and hot, drowning out everything else.

We barely made it back to the cabin.

What unfolded through the night was a blur of heat and need and the overwhelming certainty that this—this—was what a true mate bond was supposed to feel like. Cassius's hands on my skin. His scent everywhere. The way my wolf settled, completely and fiercely at peace for the first time in three years.

When it was over, I lay in cedar-scented sheets, my head on his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. His fingers traced slow patterns on my shoulder. Neither of us spoke.

I should have felt guilty. I should have felt like I'd betrayed something.

But all I felt was whole.

I woke to pale morning light filtering through the cabin windows.

Cassius was still asleep beside me, one arm draped across my waist. His face was relaxed. Peaceful. Beautiful.

I looked at him and felt the terror crash over me like a wave.

What had I done?

I'd surrendered. Completely. To a wolf I barely knew. To a bond I didn't understand. I'd let my guard down, let myself feel something real, and now I was vulnerable in a way I couldn't afford to be.

I slipped out of bed carefully, trying not to wake him. I pulled on clothes with shaking hands and walked into the living room. My journal was still on the nightstand. I didn't touch it.

I stood by the window and stared at the lake, forcing myself to breathe. To think.

This couldn't happen again. I couldn't let it. I had three weeks until the banquet. Three weeks to destroy Conrad and Rosie and walk away clean. I couldn't afford distractions. I couldn't afford to be weak.

And Cassius—whatever this bond was—made me weak.

I heard movement behind me. I turned. Cassius stood in the bedroom doorway, pulling on his shirt. His eyes found mine immediately.

He knew. I could see it in his face. He knew what I was about to do.

"Piper," he said quietly.

I composed myself with visible effort. I pulled on the Luna mask—the one I'd worn through council meetings and pack gatherings and three years of Conrad's lies. Calm. Professional. In control.

"I'm terminating your position on my security detail," I said. My voice was steady. Clinical. "Effective immediately. I'll provide a severance package. Generous. Enough to relocate if you choose."

Cassius didn't move. He just looked at me with those dark, unreadable eyes.

"You don't have to do this," he said.

"Yes," I said. "I do."

I walked to the desk and pulled out my checkbook. I wrote a number that was more than generous. More than fair. I tore off the check and held it out to him.

Cassius looked at it. Then at me.

Then he crossed the room and took the check from my hand.

"If this is what you need," he said quietly, "then I'll go."

He didn't argue. Didn't protest. He just folded the check carefully and slipped it into his pocket.

Then he walked to the door. He paused with his hand on the handle and looked back at me one last time.

"You know where to find me," he said. "When you're ready."

Then he left.

I stood in the middle of the cabin, listening to his footsteps fade down the driveway. Listening to his car start. Listening to the sound of the engine disappear into the distance.

I held myself together until the cabin was silent again.

Then I allowed myself exactly thirty seconds.

I sank onto the couch and pressed my hands against my face and let the grief crash over me. My wolf howled. The bond pulled tight, aching for him to come back.

I counted to thirty.

Then I stood up, walked to the bathroom, and washed my face.

When I looked in the mirror, the Luna stared back.

Composed. Controlled. Untouchable.

I locked the grief away and got back to work.
