Chapter 3

The summons arrived before breakfast.

An Omega knocked on my door in the east wing and handed me a folded piece of heavy cardstock. The Ironvale crest was embossed at the top. Formal. Official.

*The pack elder council requests your presence in the council chamber at nine o'clock this morning. Attendance is mandatory.*

I read it twice. Then I set it on the dresser and finished getting dressed.

I chose a charcoal suit. Tailored. Professional. The kind of thing I wore to alliance negotiations. I pulled my hair back into a low bun and checked my reflection. Composed. Controlled.

I looked like a Luna.

That was the point.

At exactly nine o'clock, I walked into the council chamber.

The room was all dark wood and high ceilings. A long table dominated the center, surrounded by heavy chairs. Conrad's parents sat at the head. Gerald Anderson, the former Alpha, looked like an older, harder version of his son. His Luna sat beside him, her hands folded neatly on the table. Three other elders occupied the remaining seats. All of them watched me enter with expressions that gave nothing away.

No one stood. No one greeted me.

I took the single empty chair at the far end of the table and waited.

Gerald spoke first. His voice was deep and cold, like stone scraping stone.

"Luna Piper," he said. The title sounded like an accusation. "We've called you here to discuss your recent... behavior."

I met his gaze and said nothing.

"You moved out of the Alpha suite," he continued. "You severed the mind-link with our son. You've been seen occupying a room in the east wing, away from your mate. This is unacceptable."

I kept my expression neutral. "I relocated to a private room. That's within my rights as Luna."

"It sends a message," Gerald's Luna said. Her voice was softer than her mate's, but no less sharp. "The pack is talking. They see division. Weakness."

"They see the truth," I said evenly.

One of the other elders—a gray-haired man named Thomas—leaned forward. "The truth, as you call it, is damaging pack stability. Alpha Conrad has explained the situation with Rosie. She's struggling. She needs family support. Your reaction has been... disproportionate."

I almost laughed. I didn't.

"Disproportionate," I repeated. "Conrad is conducting a physical affair with his stepsister while bonded to me. I found their scents in a guest room. Sustained. Intimate. That's not family support. That's betrayal."

Gerald's jaw tightened. "You will watch your tone."

"I'm stating facts," I said.

The Luna leaned forward. Her eyes were cold. "Facts, as you see them, are irrelevant. What matters is perception. The Ironvale Pack has alliances with every major territory in the region. Alliances you helped forge. If those alliances see our Alpha house in disarray, they will question our strength. They will withdraw support. You are jeopardizing everything this pack has built."

I felt the words land like stones in my chest. She was right. I had forged those alliances. I had spent three years building relationships, negotiating treaties, attending endless banquets and meetings. I had done the work.

And now they were using it against me.

Gerald folded his hands on the table. "Here is what will happen. You will return to the Alpha suite. You will restore the mind-link. You will appear at Conrad's side at all public events. You will maintain the appearance of a stable, united Luna bond."

"And if I refuse?" I asked.

The room went silent.

Thomas spoke carefully. "Pack law allows for the quiet removal of a Luna who is deemed... unfit. If you refuse to fulfill your duties, the council has the authority to strip your title and reassign you to Omega status. You would be given a small stipend and housing on the edge of pack territory. A voluntary withdrawal, for your own well-being."

Omega status. Exile dressed up as charity.

I looked at each of them in turn. Gerald. His Luna. Thomas. The other two elders whose names I barely remembered. They stared back at me with expressions that were patient. Immovable.

They thought they had me trapped.

"I need time to consider," I said.

Gerald's eyes narrowed. "You have until the end of the week. After that, we will make the decision for you."

I stood. No one stopped me.

I walked out of the council chamber with my head high and my hands steady.

But inside, my wolf was snarling.

That night, I sat in my east wing room with the pack charter spread across the small desk.

I'd pulled it from the archives that afternoon. It was a thick leather-bound document, centuries old, written in formal language that took effort to parse. I read every clause. Every subsection. Every footnote.

The elders had quoted pack law at me like it was a weapon.

I was looking for the blade that cut both ways.

Around midnight, I found it.

A clause buried deep in the section on Luna rights. It stated that a Luna could formally challenge the Alpha's decisions before the full pack assembly if she could prove actions that endangered pack stability or violated sacred bonds. The challenge required witnesses. Evidence. And a public forum.

I read it three times.

Then I opened my journal to a fresh page and wrote at the top: *The Pack Alliance Banquet.*

The banquet was held annually. Every Alpha, Beta, and high-ranking dignitary from neighboring territories attended. It was the most public, most politically significant event on the pack calendar.

It was also three weeks away.

I closed the journal and stared at the wall.

Three weeks to build my case. Three weeks to gather evidence. Three weeks to prepare.

I could do this.

I had to.

The next morning, Rosie's face was all over social media.

I saw the post during my coffee in the east wing kitchenette. One of the younger she-wolves had her phone out, scrolling, and I caught a glimpse of the screen over her shoulder.

Rosie, draped against Conrad's side in a sleek downtown lounge. His hand was visible on her waist, possessive and obvious. She wore a tight black dress and a smug smile. The caption was a single wolf emoji.

The she-wolf saw me looking and quickly turned her phone away, her face flushing.

I didn't react. I just finished my coffee and left.

Back in my room, I pulled out my own phone and found the post. I took a screenshot. Then another. I saved them both to a folder I'd labeled *Evidence.*

The whispers in the pack house grew louder after that. I heard them in the hallways. In the dining hall. In the training yard.

"—did you see the photo—"

"—Luna Piper moved out—"

"—Alpha Conrad and Rosie—"

I walked through it all with my head high and my expression calm.

Inside, I was counting down.

Three weeks.

Twenty-one days.

And then I would burn it all down.
