Chapter 1

The Sterling Pack territory stretched below me as my car wound up the mountain road toward home. Through the open window, pine and wildflowers mingled with the familiar scent markers of pack boundaries—our boundaries. The boundaries my research had helped secure and expand over the past five years.

I'd cut my conference short by a day. Something had been pulling at me, an uneasiness that my wolf, Sarah, couldn't explain but insisted I address. 'Home,' she'd whispered in my mind for hours. 'We need to go home.'

As I pulled into the driveway of the pack house, I noticed Marcus's SUV parked haphazardly near the entrance. Strange. He was supposed to be overseeing border patrols today. I checked my watch—2:17 PM. Far too early for him to be back.

'Something's wrong,' Sarah growled, pacing restlessly in my mind.

I grabbed my laptop bag and conference materials, making my way through the quiet house. Most pack members would be at work or training at this hour. The silence felt heavy, oppressive even, as I moved toward my laboratory in the east wing.

My sanctuary. The place where I'd developed the silver-infused territorial markers that had expanded Sterling Pack lands by thirty percent. The birthplace of the healing serum that funded three pack clinics. My contribution to our mate bond, to our future.

I punched in my security code, frowning when the panel flashed green immediately. It should have asked for secondary authentication. Had Marcus overridden my protocols again?

The first thing that hit me was the smell—sex and sweat and something floral that didn't belong. Then came the sounds—grunting, the rhythmic creak of my research table, a woman's high-pitched encouragement.

I stood frozen in the doorway, my brain refusing to process what my senses were telling me. Marcus—my Alpha, my mate—was bent over Amanda Walsh, the rogue he'd sponsored into our pack three months ago. Her legs were wrapped around his waist as he thrust into her, his back to the door, completely oblivious to my presence.

Around them lay the shattered remains of my lab. Vials of healing serum dripped their precious contents onto the floor. My microscope had been shoved aside, my carefully organized notes scattered. Five years of meticulous work desecrated in their passion.

Sarah howled in agony, the sound echoing only in my mind but so powerful I nearly doubled over. The mate bond between us stretched, burned, threatened to tear.

'BETRAYAL,' she snarled, and for once, we were in perfect agreement.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. Instead, I felt ice crystallize around my heart as I stepped fully into the room.

"Marcus."

One word, spoken in my normal tone, but it might as well have been a gunshot. He froze mid-thrust, his body tensing. Amanda's eyes widened over his shoulder, meeting mine. There was no shame there—only calculation, and the briefest flicker of triumph.

Marcus turned slowly, still joined with her, his face a mask of shock and something else—not guilt, but annoyance at being interrupted.

"Elena," he said, voice ragged. "You're supposed to be at your conference."

That was his first response. Not an apology. Not an explanation. Just irritation that his schedule for betrayal had been disrupted.

"Get out of my lab," I said, my voice clinical, detached. I gestured to the destruction around us. "Clean this. Replace every piece of equipment. By dawn."

Marcus's expression darkened, Alpha pride warring with the knowledge of his transgression. "Elena—"

"By dawn," I repeated, cutting him off. I stepped back, straightening my white lab coat. "Or I contact Alpha Reiner about our territorial agreements."

The threat landed perfectly. Alpha Reiner—his sister's mate and leader of the neighboring pack—controlled the inheritance rights Marcus needed to secure his future territory. Rights that depended entirely on our alliance. On my goodwill.

Without another word, I turned and walked away, my steps measured and calm though Sarah continued to howl her anguish. In my mind, I was already composing the formal communiqué to Alpha Reiner, the first move in what would become my systematic dismantling of everything Marcus Sterling held dear.

He thought he'd taken everything from me today. He had no idea what I was about to take from him.

The mate bond throbbed between us, wounded but not yet broken. Soon, I promised Sarah. Soon we would be free of him. And he would understand exactly what he had lost.
