Chapter 2

Nobody answered him.

Not my father. Not Ethan. Not Julian.

Damian shifted Ava onto one arm and walked through the sliding doors like he owned the terminal. Knowing him, he might have.

"I asked a question," he said.

"I heard you." I tucked a loose curl behind Ava's ear. "And yes. These are the people."

Richard straightened his tie, the way he always did before a board vote he planned to win. "And who exactly are you to ask?"

Damian didn't even glance at him. His eyes stayed on me, checking my face, my wrist, my shoulders. Looking for damage.

"Did they touch you?"

"Julian grabbed my elbow."

Julian's head snapped toward me. "Are you serious right now?"

"You asked who her father was," I said. "Now you get to meet him."

Five years ago, I walked out of the Sterling mansion with one suitcase and the clothes on my back.

No shares. No trust fund. Not one cent of my father's money.

Julian had followed me to the front steps that night. He hadn't begged. He'd sighed, like I was a bill he'd forgotten to pay.

"Isabella, you'll calm down in a few days. You'll be back."

I hadn't turned around.

Now Ethan cleared his throat, stepping into the gap between us. His voice had gone soft, careful. The voice he used on difficult clients.

"Bella, let's not make a scene. Dad already knew your flight. That's why we're here. We came to bring you home."

I raised an eyebrow. "You tracked my flight?"

"Dad has people."

"Of course he does."

Richard folded his arms. "Did you think you could land in this city without me knowing? Everything that happens here, I hear about."

"Not everything, Father." I smiled. "Clearly."

Ethan pressed on, like he hadn't heard me. "Here's the thing. You've been gone a long time. The industry's changed. Starting over won't be easy. But Dad's willing to help."

"Help," I repeated.

"If you apologize to Sophia," Ethan said, "a real apology, in front of the family, Dad will let you come back to the company. A director's position. Maybe more, in time."

For a second, the whole airport went quiet in my head.

Then the laugh climbed up my throat, and I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep it down.

Ava leaned close to Damian's ear and whispered, loud enough for all of us to hear. "Why is Mommy making her funny face?"

"Because someone told a joke, princess."

Ethan's face flushed. "This isn't a joke, Bella. It's a generous offer."

"A director's position," I said slowly. "At Sterling Group."

"Yes."

"Ethan, how much was Sterling Group worth at the end of last quarter?"

He frowned. "Why does that matter?"

"Humor me."

Richard answered for him, chin lifted. "Close to four billion."

I nodded. "That's nice."

That was all I said. I didn't tell them that Aurelian Holdings, the company I'd built from a rented room above a dry cleaner, had passed that number two years ago. I didn't tell them I'd flown here to close the biggest acquisition in Asia this year, and that I'd planned this trip without ever thinking of them once.

They'd find out.

People like my father always did, eventually. Usually too late.

"You think I need a job from you?" I asked.

"I think you have a child and no family," Richard said. "I think you're proud and stubborn, and you've had a hard few years. I'm offering you a way back."

"You're offering me a seat at the end of the table again."

His jaw worked, but nothing came out.

I remembered that first year too well. The cheap office. The investors who laughed me out of the room because I was young and a woman and didn't have a famous last name anymore.

And then Damian.

He'd walked into my third pitch meeting, sat in the back, and said nothing for forty minutes. At the end, he'd stood up and offered me a partnership. Not a loan. Not a gift.

I'd glared at him. "I don't take charity."

"Good," he'd said. "I'm not offering any. I don't need you to lean on me, Isabella. I just want to see how far you can go."

He'd never once tried to carry me.

He'd just walked beside me until I didn't need anyone to carry me at all.

Julian hadn't taken his eyes off Damian this whole time. He'd gone still in a strange, sharp way, like a dog that had caught a scent it didn't like.

Now he stepped forward, shoulders squared.

"You."

Damian finally turned his head.

"Who are you?" Julian demanded. "You think you can show up in a nice car, pick up a kid, and play hero? Who the hell are you?"

Damian set Ava down gently. She grabbed my hand, curious and not scared at all. She'd grown up around Damian's calm. Nothing frightened her when he was near.

Then he faced Julian fully.

He was half a head taller. He didn't use it. He didn't need to.

"Alexander Damian Blackwood," he said.

Ethan stiffened. I watched the name land on him. Blackwood Capital. The fund that half of Europe's banks answered to.

The world called him Alexander. I was the only one who called him Damian.

"I don't care what your name is," Julian snapped. "I asked who you are to her."

Damian looked at me. Just a short glance, warm and steady.

Then he looked back at Julian.

"Her husband."

Two words. Quiet. Almost bored.

The air seemed to go out of the whole terminal.

Richard took a half step back. Ethan's mouth opened and closed.

And Julian...

I'd seen Julian Moore win contracts and lose them. I'd seen him charm senators and fire assistants. I'd seen him stand at the altar rehearsal with that easy, perfect smile, so sure of himself, so sure of me.

That smile was gone now.

All of it. The pride. The confidence. The certainty that I'd always be somewhere close, waiting for him to finally notice me.

His lips parted. His gaze dropped to my left hand.

To the ring there. Not his.

"Husband," he said, barely above a whisper. "You married him?"

"Four years ago."

"Four..." He swallowed. "That's one year after you left."

"I know how math works, Julian."

Ava tugged my fingers. "Mommy, is that man sad?"

I looked at Julian, at the hollow look on his face, and felt nothing I expected to feel. No victory. No ache.

Just quiet.

"I think," I said, "he's just surprised."

Damian slid his arm around my waist. "The car's waiting. We have a dinner with the Takeda board tonight."

Ethan's head jerked up. "Takeda? The Takeda Group?"

I didn't answer.

But I saw the color drain from my father's face, faster than it had drained from Julian's.

Because Richard Sterling had been trying to buy into Takeda for three years.

And he'd just figured out who was about to beat him to it.
