Chapter 2

The Alpha manor smelled of fresh paint and lavender cleaning oil when Lily and I walked through the front doors the next morning.

Cardboard boxes lined the main corridor, stacked two high against the walnut paneling. Pack servants hurried past us carrying antique furniture, their eyes darting to the floor whenever they saw me.

"Mommy, why are all those boxes by my door?" Lily asked, holding my hand.

I didn't answer right away. I led her up the grand staircase toward the east wing. The master heir suite at the end of the hall had been prepared for Lily since the week she was born. We had spent months decorating it, painting the walls a soft cream and hanging silver curtains to catch the morning sun.

When we reached the landing, the door was already wide open.

The polished brass nameplate that read *Lily* had been unscrewed and tossed onto a nearby side table. In its place hung a fresh silver plaque engraved with bold block letters: *Owen Blackwood*.

Inside, two decorators were rolling beige paint over the far wall, covering the colorful crayon mural Lily had drawn for her fifth birthday. The stick figures of her, Kieran, and me holding hands vanished beneath thick, wet strokes.

Lily froze. "My picture..."

"It was clutter, sweetie," Celeste's smooth voice called out from inside the room.

She walked out into the corridor wearing an ivory knit sweater, holding a clipboard with inventory sheets. She smiled with easy confidence. "Alpha bloodlines require space that honors their power. Kieran agreed that Owen needs the suite with the natural grounding runes to help stabilize his awakening."

"This is Lily's room," I said, stepping forward.

"It was the heir's suite," Celeste corrected gently, tilting her head. "And as of yesterday, Owen is the heir."

Heavy footsteps echoed on the hardwood stairs behind us. Kieran appeared at the top of the landing, flanked by two senior pack councilmen. He looked sharp in his dark suit, his expression composed and practical.

"You're back early, Evelyn," Kieran said, stopping beside Celeste.

"You gave our daughter's room away without telling me," I said, my voice dangerously calm.

"It's a practical adjustment," Kieran replied smoothly, waving a dismissive hand toward the door. "Owen's wolf woke with Alpha-grade intensity. The east wing has direct access to the pack training grounds and the ancient focus stones beneath the foundation. It makes sense for him to be here."

"And where is Lily supposed to sleep?"

"The guest suite in the west cottage is perfectly comfortable," Kieran said, as if he were offering a generous compromise. "This isn't permanent, Evelyn. It's just what the pack needs right now. In fact, I need you focused on something more important."

He stepped closer, lowering his voice slightly so the elders wouldn't hear every word, though Celeste remained right at his elbow.

"The Founder's Dinner is in three days," Kieran said. "I expect you to attend. And before that, I want you to spend the next two afternoons teaching Celeste the proper Luna table etiquette and ceremonial seating protocols."

I stared at him. "You want me to train your mistress on how to run my household?"

"Celeste is not my mistress. She is the mother of the pack's future Alpha," Kieran said, his tone sharpening with reprimand. "The pack needs to see unity. If you sit beside her and show her the ropes, the council will see that the Blackwood family is strong and organized."

Lily took a timid step forward, looking up at Kieran with wide, hopeful eyes. "Daddy?"

Kieran glanced down at her, his brows pulling together in annoyance as he caught the elders watching from the hallway.

"Lily, go back with your mother," Kieran said, waving her off without a second thought. "The council and I are discussing pack succession. Don't interrupt when adults are speaking."

Lily shrank back against my legs, burying her face into my coat.

Celeste turned around and walked back into the bedroom. A second later, she reemerged holding Lily’s favorite pale-blue moon blanket—the one I had knitted for her when she was a baby.

Celeste dropped it unceremoniously onto a dusty cardboard box in the corridor.

"We need to clear out the lingering scent," Celeste said lightly, brushing off her hands. "Owen’s wolf is sensitive. His space needs to smell purely of the direct heir."

"Celeste," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "Watch yourself."

Celeste didn't look intimidated. Instead, she reached into her folder and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment, turning it toward me.

It was an official pack decree titled *Luna Transition Protocol*. At the bottom, stamped with the pack seal, was Kieran's bold, familiar signature.

I looked from the paper to Kieran.

He didn't look away, and he didn't apologize.

"It's about capability, Evelyn," Kieran said, crossing his arms over his chest. "Celeste gave this pack what you couldn't—a fierce, awakening Alpha son. The elders respect power. She is simply better suited to stand beside me in formal pack affairs from now on."

He paused, offering a faint, patronizing half-smile.

"Don't make a scene out of this. You and Lily can keep the west cottage. You'll still have a monthly allowance, and you'll still live on pack grounds. I won't actually kick you out."

He said it like he was bestowing an act of royal mercy.

In that single moment, every lingering trace of regret I had carried since yesterday evaporated.

Kieran's greatest flaw wasn't that he preferred another woman, or even that he favored another child. His greatest arrogance was believing that I had nowhere else to go. He genuinely thought that after five years of quiet compliance, I would accept any scrap of dignity he threw under the table just to remain the Alpha's discarded wife.

"I understand," I said softly.

Kieran nodded, pleased by what he assumed was my submission. "Good. Start packing your things from the main closet this afternoon. Owen's wardrobe arrives tomorrow."

I picked up Lily's moon blanket from the dusty box, shaking the lint from the soft yarn. Then I took my daughter's hand and walked down the stairs without looking back once.

When we reached the west bedroom, I locked the heavy oak door behind us.

Lily sat quietly on the edge of the mattress, clutching her plush wolves. "Mommy, are we going to live in the little house now?"

"No, Lily," I told her, kissing the top of her head. "We're going home."

I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed a secure, encrypted line.

The call connected on the second ring.

"Lady Evelyn," an older, aristocratic voice answered with absolute deference. "We received your message yesterday. Your private jet is fueled and on standby at the northern airfield."

"Thank you, Nathan," I said, my voice steady and cold. "Before we leave, I have one directive."

"Name it, My Lady."

"Prepare the termination papers," I said. "Every anonymous grant, every medical supply subsidy, and the five-million-dollar monthly security endowment Moonvale has funneled into the Greyfang Pack treasury for the last five years. I want all of it ready for my signature."

There was a brief pause on the line, followed by a quiet, approving sigh. "Consider it done. The paperwork will be ready when you are."

"Good."

I hung up.

I spent the next hour consolidating everything into the single small suitcase. I didn't touch the expensive jewelry Kieran had bought for political galas, nor did I pack the designer gowns hanging in the wardrobe. I took only my personal documents, Lily's birth certificate, her hand-sewn dresses, and the few mementos from my real home in Moonvale.

Around dusk, the bedroom door clicked open.

Kieran walked in, loosening his tie after an afternoon of council meetings. When his eyes landed on the suitcase resting by the foot of the bed, a chuckle escaped his throat.

"Are you really doing this?" Kieran asked, leaning against the doorframe with an amused smirk. "Packing bags to throw a tantrum over a bedroom? Evelyn, you're twenty-six years old. Stop acting like a dramatic child."

He walked over to the dresser, dropping his watch onto the tray. "Unpack your bags. Go sleep in the west wing tonight. Once you calm down, we'll talk about your role at the Founder's Dinner."

I stood up, adjusting the strap of Lily's small coat, and looked straight into his confident, unbothered eyes.

"Don't worry about the dinner, Kieran," I said calmly. "At the Founder's Dinner, I'll give you exactly what you asked for."
