Chapter 2

The scent of pine and polished steel hit me the second I stepped through the main entrance of Silverclaw Arena.

Nothing had changed in five years, except the arrogance had grown thicker.

I walked past the security turnstiles, my leather field bag slung over one shoulder. The grand rotunda was brightly lit, designed to impress high-rolling pack sponsors and VIP ticket holders. But right in the center of the marble floor, where a championship trophy usually stood, sat a reinforced glass pedestal.

Spotlights beamed directly down onto it.

Inside the case, resting on a black velvet pillow, was my old silver whistle.

The metal casing was crushed on one side, scored with deep tooth marks from the night the cage opened. Directly underneath it, a polished brass plaque gleamed under the halogen lights.

*The whistle that couldn’t stop a wolf.*

"It draws quite a crowd during tournament week," a light, musical voice called out from the left corridor.

Mira walked out of the executive lounge, holding a glass of sparkling water. She wore a tailored cream coat, her dark hair pinned up neatly, a patronizing smile curving her lips.

"We consider it part of the Arena’s history now," Mira said, stopping two steps away from the display case. "A reminder of what happens when someone unqualified steps into the cage. You aren't offended, are you, Nora? It’s just business."

I looked at the dented silver tube behind the glass. My pulse didn't flicker.

"Who recovered it?" I asked.

Mira’s smile wavered for a fraction of a second. Her fingers tightened slightly around her glass. "What?"

"The whistle," I said, meeting her eyes. "The floor was cleared and washed down with industrial acid within twenty minutes of the incident. A piece of light metal like this would have been swept into the incinerator chutes unless someone went into the pit specifically to pull it out before the cleanup crew arrived."

I took half a step closer. "Who went into the pit, Mira?"

Mira shifted her weight, clearing her throat as her gaze drifted toward the glass. "I wouldn't know. That was five years ago. Pack security must have bagged it as evidence."

"Security logged zero physical evidence from that night," a deep voice cut in.

Evan came down the wide marble staircase, buttoning his charcoal suit jacket. He looked older, the sharp lines around his jaw hardened by five years of managing the territory’s most lucrative fighting circuit. He barely glanced at the display case as he came to a stop beside Mira.

His gaze raked over me, taking in my plain dark jeans, utility boots, and the standard black windbreaker bearing the small Northstar crest.

"I see they sent you," Evan said, his tone flat and dismissive. "I told Director Hale we needed their primary clinical specialist on site immediately, not an intake assistant."

I stared at him. "You think Northstar sent an intake assistant for a Class-Four emergency?"

"I know how these institutes operate," Evan said, waving a hand in the air. "They send an aide ahead to verify the containment specs before the real doctor bothers to get on a plane. Look, Nora, I’m glad you found steady work after everything that happened. If you’re struggling out there, you don't have to keep jumping between private contract agencies. Once this tournament is over, I can talk to the pack medical wing. We can find you an entry-level behavior aide position."

A faint scoff almost left my lips, but I kept my face blank.

"You still think I came here looking for a job?" I asked.

Evan frowned, clearly irritated by the lack of gratitude in my voice. "I'm offering you a clean slate. You disgraced this pack, but I’m not heartless. Now stop wasting time. Is Director Hale arriving on the morning shuttle or not?"

"Hand over Cassian Black's telemetry logs and his last three neuro-chemical panels," I said, ignoring his question entirely. "I need the raw files from the biometric monitors, not the summarized public reports your PR team posted."

Evan’s jaw tightened. "You don't need raw files to prep a holding stall. Don't play the high-level professional with me, Nora. You couldn't handle a standard Alpha five years ago. You definitely don't have the clearance to analyze Cassian's neural charts."

Before I could answer, a sharp alarm buzzer ripped through the hallway leading to the prep cages.

"Code Yellow in Bay Three!" a frantic voice shouted over the wall intercom. "Garrick is seizing! He’s locked in mid-shift!"

Evan cursed under his breath, turning toward the double doors at the end of the corridor. Mira followed immediately, and I kept pace behind them, stepping into the subterranean training wing.

Through the heavy observation window of Bay Three, a two-hundred-and-fifty-pound combat Alpha was thrashing violently against the concrete floor. His bones were cracking, halfway between human and wolf. Black fur sprouted across his shoulders, his jaw elongated into a snout, but his spine was locked in an unnatural, rigid arch.

"Get the pneumatic injector!" Mira commanded, pushing past two nervous handlers. "Load thirty milligrams of neuro-sedative! Drop him before he tears his own ligaments!"

Two guards in heavy padded armor moved toward the cage door, one holding a long pneumatic pole loaded with a bright blue vial.

I took one look through the glass at the wolf's twitching limbs.

His eyes were wide, the pupils narrowed to tiny pinpricks, and thick, white foam bubbled around his locked jaws. His chest was vibrating in shallow, rapid spasms.

"Stop," I said firmly, stepping between the guards and the door switch. "Do not inject that."

Mira glared at me. "Get out of the way, Nora! He’s going into a violent frenzy. If we don't sedate him, he’ll kill himself or someone else."

"He’s not in a frenzy," I said, my voice cutting through the noise. "He has severe serotonin toxicity from whatever pre-fight stimulant your trainers gave him. The tremors are neurological shock. If you inject a high-potency neuro-sedative into an overloaded nervous system, his heart will stop, or his brain will trigger a full survival berserk."

"I am the head conditioning coordinator here," Mira snapped. "You're a failed trainee who hasn't touched an Alpha in five years. Inject him now!"

The guard bypassed me, jammed the keycard into the lock, and stepped into the enclosure. He slammed the pneumatic needle straight into the thrashing Alpha’s shoulder.

The blue liquid drained in less than a second.

For two heartbeats, the cage went dead silent.

Then Garrick’s eyes flashed a blinding, violent crimson.

A deafening roar shattered the air. The Alpha surged upward, his muscles swelling with horrifying force. With one swipe of his massive, clawed arm, he hurled the armed guard across the room. The man slammed into the reinforced concrete wall with a sickening crunch and slumped to the floor, unconscious.

The second guard panicked, dropping his baton as the beast lunged forward. Garrick threw him into the steel gate, knocking the heavy metal door wide open.

"Fall back!" Evan yelled, grabbing Mira by the arm and dragging her behind the security console. "Get the shock rifles! Seal the corridor!"

Guards scrambled in every direction, tripping over equipment as the half-shifted monster stepped out into the open hallway. Blood dripped from his fangs. His ears were pinned flat against his skull, ready to rip apart the first living thing that moved.

Mira hid behind Evan's shoulder, her face pale as ash.

I didn't run.

I took two steps forward, positioning myself directly in the center of the narrow corridor.

Right in his direct line of sight.

"Nora, get down, you idiot!" Evan barked from behind the reinforced desk. "He’ll tear your throat out!"

I ignored him completely.

I didn't reach for a weapon. I didn't reach for a whistle.

I squared my shoulders, dropping my center of gravity by two inches. I relaxed my hands at my sides, unclenched my jaw, and slowed my breathing down to a deep, measured four-count rhythm.

At the same time, I released a thin, controlled trace of my natural Omega scent into the air—not the submissive, panicked pheromones of prey, but the deep, grounding frequency of an apex pack regulator.

The massive beast took a heavy, aggressive step toward me, his claws gouging deep grooves into the floor. He leaned down, his snout inches from my face, hot breath washing over my skin.

I didn't flinch. I didn't blink.

I matched his bloodshot gaze, keeping my breathing entirely steady, offering zero threat, zero fear, and absolute authority.

*One. Two. Three. Four.*

The violent tremors in the Alpha’s chest began to slow. The wild crimson in his eyes faded to a dull amber. His flared nostrils caught the steadying pheromone, his stiffened spine gradually softening as the sensory overload in his brain receded.

Slowly, the tension drained from his massive shoulders.

With a low, exhausted whine, the giant wolf collapsed onto his belly, resting his heavy snout flat against the cold tile right beside my boots.

The corridor fell into dead silence.

The guards stood frozen against the walls, shock rifles trembling in their hands.

Behind the console, Evan stared at me, his eyes wide and speech completely gone.

Mira swallowed hard, her face flushed with humiliation. She stepped out from behind Evan, frantically smoothing down her coat to regain her composure.

"See?" Mira said, her voice strained and breathless. "The sedative just took twenty seconds to circulate through his bloodstream. It's a good thing I authorized the injection when I did."

Before anyone could reply, the deep, earth-shaking howl of a klaxon began to wail through the floorboards beneath our feet.

Red emergency strobe lights bathed the entire subterranean level in crimson.

A young tech burst out of the heavy blast doors leading to the lowest level, his shirt torn and blood smeared across his forehead.

"Director Vance!" the tech screamed in absolute panic. "Cassian Black just snapped the reinforced titanium anchors! He tore through the secondary containment gate!"

I looked past the screaming technician, straight down into the pitch-black corridor of the basement pit.

"Then take me to him," I said.
