Chapter 4

But avoiding Kian didn’t mean I could avoid Jordan.

As soon as my phone was charged, messages started popping up non-stop.

Before I could even check them, the phone rang.

I was so startled that I hung up.

Aside from a few missed calls from Kian, the rest were from Jordan.

The next moment, his message came through.

Jordan: [Running away?]

I didn’t know how to respond to his message.

A thought crossed my mind but was quickly dismissed by Jordan’s words.

Jordan: [Don’t start with that whole ‘I was drunk’ excuse.]

Within seconds, another message came.

Jordan: [Hiding out, huh? Just wait for it.]

I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d messed things up badly.

My instincts were screaming that I was in trouble.

Sure enough, when I went outside to take out the trash, Jordan was waiting at the door. He was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. When he saw me, he sneered.

“Does it still count?”

I adjusted the scarf I had thrown on in a hurry.

It was a bit cold, but it didn’t compare to Jordan’s tone.

He snatched the trash from my hands and placed it by the door.

He then pinned me against the door frame.

“You don’t have to do this,” I said nervously.

I waved my hands in a panic at the man in front of me.

“And, I... I don’t remember much. I won’t talk about it.”

He scoffed, his long fingers fiddling with his tie.

I felt flustered.

“Hey, stop, stop. It’s broad daylight.”

Jordan covered my mouth with his hand and tugged at his collar.

“You don’t remember? If you still can’t recall, I secretly recorded it yesterday. Maybe that’ll jog your memory...”

I pried his hand away and shook my head.

“No, there’s not need to do that.”

The kiss marks on Jordan’s neck instantly brought back memories of last night’s intimacy.

As if he didn’t see my flushed face, Jordan continued, “You may think it’s nothing, but I don’t. Just running off after what happened, what do you take me for?”

I swallowed hard, listening to Jordan’s accusations. “I’m sorry, I was drunk last night.”

As soon as the words left my mouth, I felt like I had become a heartless jerk from a TV drama.

Jordan let go of me and slowly adjusted his tie. “It was you who said you wanted to give it a try.”

As I noticed the hurt in his eyes, the words I wanted to say got stuck in my throat.

“Thought you were serious,” he said.

He watched me with his head lowered, making me feel like a woman who used and then abandoned him.

“Forget it.”

With that, he left.

Through the peephole, I watched Jordan’s figure fade away.

I felt a vague sense of reluctance in my chest.

After that, Jordan and I acted like nothing had happened.

We went back to how things were before.

Sometimes, when we crossed paths, he wouldn’t even glance at me.

Kian, on the other hand, had changed.

“Got dumped?”

He swirled his wine glass lazily as he walked closer to me.

“Audrey, he’s not the one for you. I’ve never seen him bring a woman around; he’s quite picky.”

I looked at the crowd coming and going at the party, feeling uneasy.

If my mother hadn’t insisted I come, I would have preferred to stay at home.

“I’m happy and I like him. It’s none of your business.”

Kian put down his wine glass, his expression irritated.

“It was just a game and a kiss with my friend. Is it such a big deal?”

I laughed.

“Yeah, and for me it was just spending the night with another man. Is it also such a big deal?”

The next moment, the sound of a wine glass shattering on the floor echoed.

Kian grabbed my wrist.

“You spent the night with him?”

The music at the party was soft, and some people’s attention was drawn to the commotion over here.

Kian held my wrist, not letting me leave.

“Why are you so casual? You can do it with anyone, huh?”

Before I could speak, Ruth came from behind Kian.

“Kian, what are you doing? Your dad asked me to come and get you.”

Kian shot me a dark look, then released my wrist forcefully.

The back of my hand hit the edge of a chair, causing pain.

Kian didn’t seem to care, smiling indifferently. He ignored Ruth as well, walking around her.

The unpleasantness didn’t end there.

Ruth, unfortunately, didn’t follow Kian but walked toward me.

“My boyfriend is pretty great, isn’t he? Worthy of you trying to be the other woman?”

Her words sound amusing but also made me feel pity for her. It seemed Kian didn’t care about her either.

“Go ahead and make Kian disappear from my life if you can,” I said.

Of course, she didn’t have it in her. Kian wouldn’t listen to anyone.

A familiar figure in the hallway caught my attention.

The next second, Ruth suddenly stumbled toward me. With a lurch, red wine spilled all over me.

People’s eyes were drawn to the commotion.

Led by a maid, I went to a room upstairs.

“Miss, this is the dress your mother asked me to bring to you.”

I took the dress and dismissed the maid.

However, I was puzzled.

My mother was still traveling abroad.

The room’s decor caught my attention.

Though minimalistic, the items were carefully chosen.

I heard the sound of a door unlocking. I picked up a chair and quietly hid behind the door.

Just as I was about to strike, the figure turned around.

It was Jordan.

I was lifting the chair awkwardly in the air.

Jordan looked me up and down, and then his gaze settled on the chair in my hand.

“What’s this? Planning to hit me with that?”
