Chapter 4

Bryce told me about the elder meeting the way men like him deliver bad news to people they've already decided can't handle it — slowly, with careful pauses, watching my face for the moment I'd realize I was out of my depth.

We were in his office at the Ironveil pack house. He sat behind his desk. I sat across from it. The chair was slightly lower than his, which was not an accident.

"Elder Eugene Mason is the founding patriarch of the Ironveil bloodline," he said. "He has attended every formal alliance meeting for forty years. He expects a specific standard of conduct and a working knowledge of pack law." A pause. "The meeting is ceremonial in nature, but the elder takes it seriously."

I nodded once.

"There will be other pack members present. Senior wolves. The kind of people who notice things." Another pause, this one longer. He was watching me the way you watch a glass you've set too close to the edge of a table. "I want to make sure you're prepared for the environment."

I looked at him for a moment.

"Which founding statutes is the elder most likely to reference?" I asked.

Something moved across his face. Not quite surprise. More like the expression of a man who has just discovered the table is sturdier than he thought.

"The Territorial Compact of the First Alliance," he said, after a beat. "And possibly the Mason Succession Protocols."

"The 1987 revision or the original?"

The pause this time was different. Shorter. Sharper.

"Both," he said.

"Good." I stood and picked up my bag. "I'll see you Saturday."

I left him sitting behind his desk with his hands very still on the surface of it.

---

The ancestral pack house sat at the northern edge of Ironveil territory, set back from the road behind a line of old oaks that had been there longer than the alliance. Stone walls, high ceilings, the particular smell of a building that had absorbed decades of wolf and ceremony and wood smoke. The kind of place that expected you to be smaller than it.

I was not smaller than it.

Bryce met me at the entrance. He looked at my dress — deep charcoal, structured, nothing that could be called decorative — and then at my face, and I watched him recalibrate something without quite knowing what he was recalibrating.

"The elder is already inside," he said.

"Then we shouldn't keep him waiting."

Elder Eugene Mason was smaller than I expected. Compact, white-haired, with the kind of stillness that belongs to very old wolves who have stopped needing to perform their authority. He was seated at the head of a long table when we entered, and he looked up at me with eyes that were doing something most people's eyes didn't do — actually looking.

Not at my face. Not at my wolf. At whatever was underneath both.

The meeting opened with the formal protocols. Bryce handled the introductions with smooth efficiency, positioning me as his companion for the season — the language careful, the implication clear. I was the accessory. The placeholder. The thing he had brought to fill a space while the real pieces moved into position.

I let him finish.

Then Elder Eugene turned to me and asked, in a voice like gravel settling, what I understood about the Mason Succession Protocols as they applied to contested Luna claims.

I answered him.

Not the short version. The full version — the 1987 revision and the original, the three territorial precedents that had tested the protocols in the decades between, the specific clause that governed Luna designation in the absence of a completed marking ceremony. I cited the founding statutes by section. I referenced the alliance framework that the Territorial Compact had established and the two cases in which it had been invoked.

The room was very quiet by the time I finished.

Bryce had gone still beside me. Not the controlled stillness he usually wore — something different. The stillness of a man who has just watched his plan walk off a cliff in real time and hasn't yet decided how to react.

Elder Eugene looked at me for a long moment. Then the corner of his mouth moved.

"The elder council hasn't had a candidate cite the Harrow precedent in eleven years," he said. "Most people don't know it exists."

"Most people don't read the original compact," I said. "They read the summary."

He made a sound that might have been a laugh.

Then he asked me to shift.

I had known this was coming. These meetings always ended with it — the elder's right to assess the wolf directly, to see what the human form was carrying. I stood, and I let her come.

My wolf emerged the way she always did now: clean, certain, without the desperate scrambling of a late bloom. Silver from nose to tail, the kind of silver that catches light and holds it. She was not the largest wolf in the room. She didn't need to be.

Every wolf in that room lowered their eyes.

Not because I commanded it. Because she simply was what she was, and the room recognized it before anyone had time to decide whether to.

I felt Bryce's wolf surge. That hot, urgent pressure of an animal that had just seen something it believed belonged to it. I felt it the way you feel a sound through the floor — not heard, just known.

I shifted back. Smoothed my dress. Sat down.

Bryce reached for the glass in front of him and straightened it on the table. Then he straightened the one beside it. His Beta, standing at the door, watched both hands and said nothing.

---

The formal meeting concluded an hour later. Bryce moved toward the door with the other senior wolves, already managing the aftermath — his voice back to its usual measured cadence, his face composed. He was good at recovery. I'd give him that.

I was gathering my folder when Elder Eugene said my name.

Not Alayna. Just — my name. The way old wolves say things, without decoration.

I turned.

He was standing beside the table, and he was holding something. A pendant on a fine chain — old silver, the kind that had been handled so many times it had gone soft at the edges. The Ironveil crest at its center, small and precise.

I knew what it was. I had done my research.

He crossed the room and clasped it around my neck without asking permission, the way you don't ask permission when you're doing something that has already been decided.

"The founding Luna of this pack wore that," he said. "Every true Luna of Ironveil has worn it since." He stepped back and looked at me. "It's not symbolic."

"I know," I said.

His eyes did that thing again — looking past the surface, looking at whatever was underneath.

"Good," he said. And walked out.

I stood alone in the room for a moment. The pendant was cool against my collarbone. Light, for something that carried that much legal weight.

Jenna Jones could not be named Luna of Ironveil now. Not while I wore this. The elder had just removed her from the board with eleven words and a piece of old silver, and he had done it in front of witnesses.

I had not planned for this.

I walked to my car and sat in the driver's seat without starting the engine. Outside, the old oaks moved in the wind.

I turned the pendant over in my fingers. Identified the three new leverage points it created. Began adjusting the timeline.

The plan was still on schedule.

I told myself that was all that mattered.

I almost believed it.
