After the Divorce, I Shine Brighter Than Ever
Chapter 4
“Of course, Ruby. Just throw a tantrum, and it will be fine. We’re family after all. If the neighbors see you always staying at your mother’s house, they’ll make fun of us, won’t they?”
“Let’s go back with your mother. We’ve made pumpkin soup you like. Didn’t you say you wanted something sweet last time? Come home.”
My mother-in-law smiled as she accompanied me.
At the wedding, I thought she genuinely cared for me as her daughter-in-law.
But later, I realized she could completely change her attitude. Looking at her and the listless Caleb before me, I felt a bit soft-hearted. After thinking for a moment, I agreed and asked them to wait for me.
“Mom, let me get my stuff.”
My mother-in-law nodded eagerly, unable to hide her happiness. “Great, freshen up. We can visit your uncle’s house on the way and say sorry.”
As I paused on the stairs, my parents looked surprised. “Why would you apologize?”
My mother-in-law didn’t expect such a strong reaction from us, so she smiled and explained, “A few days ago, it was his uncle’s birthday banquet. Ruby didn’t go because she wasn’t feeling well. It’s the first year she married into the family, so it wouldn’t be right not to pay a visit.”
Upon hearing this, my mother immediately stood up and said, "What kind of etiquette is this? Our family doesn't have such a thing, and we've never heard of it. Does she have to go and apologize just because she missed a birthday banquet?"
My younger sister, who was listening on the side, also felt indignant and said, "Exactly! That's absurd."
At this point, Caleb's mother also refused to back down and argued loudly, 'This is a rule that has been passed down in our family for generations! Since Ruby has married into our family, she is naturally a member of the Turner family and should follow our rules.'
She shouted at my parents again, "When they got married, we offered you a gift. Are you trying to back out?"
What an accusation!
I stood on the two steps, listening to their argument, and my anger surged. I interrupted, "Are you saying that by marrying into your family, I am essentially sold to your family?'
I looked at Caleb, who had been silent on the side and felt full of irony in my heart.
'How did I end up marrying someone like him?'
"Caleb, do you also think that I am sold to you and the Turner family?"
He hesitated for a moment, "Ruby..."
Unable to say a word for a long time.
"Caleb, let's get divorced."
