After the Broken Engagement, My Fiancé Regretted It
After the Broken Engagement, My Fiancé Regretted It Chapter 1
My entire family had suddenly fallen critically ill, their lives hanging by a thread.
The doctor said it was due to poisoning, and the only antidote was a newly developed drug by Griffin Pharmaceuticals, incredibly difficult to get.
Upon hearing this, I finally let out a sigh of relief.
After all, my fiancé, Noah Griffin, was the CEO of Griffin Pharmaceuticals.
It seemed like fate had dealt me a favorable hand.
But I never expected, while waiting for the life-saving drug, that Noah would fail me at the last moment.
Red-eyed and exhausted, I knelt by the ICU door, frantically calling Noah over and over again.
“Noah’s with me. Do you need something?”
The voice on the other end wasn’t Noah – it was Alice, his childhood friend. “Oh, sorry, Josie, my dog has acute gastroenteritis, and Noah’s helping me with that right now.”
I gritted my teeth and tried to stay calm. “But didn’t he promise to bring the medicine for my parents? Where’s the drug?”
Noah’s voice suddenly came through in the background.
“It’s just some medicine, right? Why are you so worked up? Can’t you see I’m busy? I’ll have my assistant bring it over later.”
But it was too late.
That night, I lost the last of my family.
——
The hospital hallway reeked of antiseptic.
I knelt in front of the doctor, begging him to save my adoptive parents’ lives.
The doctor frowned, a pained look in his eyes.
“Please, don’t do this. It’s not that we don’t want to help, but without the right medication, there’s nothing more we can do.”
I broke down, sobbing.
I knew the doctor was right.
Today was supposed to be a day of celebration, marking my parents’ wedding anniversary. They had spent their entire lives being frugal, and now that my career was stable, and I was engaged, it was time for them to enjoy life.
But I never expected that just two hours after returning from dinner at the hotel, my parents would collapse, vomiting blood and slipping into unconsciousness.
I tried calling my fiancé, Noah Griffin, but he didn’t answer, so I quickly dialed 911 and rushed my parents to the hospital.
When we arrived, I learned it wasn’t just some sudden illness – they had been poisoned.
The only potential cure was a newly developed drug from Noah’s pharmaceutical company. Nothing else would work.
I was spared only because I hadn’t eaten the last dish served, the chocolate mousse, due to my picky eating habits.
After begging the hospital staff, they placed my parents on the best life-support machines available. I sat vigil outside the ICU, dialing Noah’s number repeatedly.
On the way to the hospital, Noah had promised he’d bring the medicine as quickly as possible.
But now, hours had passed beyond the expected time, and I hadn’t even caught a glimpse of the drug.
Worse yet, Noah had seemingly vanished.
Dozens of calls later, he finally picked up.
But it wasn’t him who answered – it was Alice Lipton.
“Oh, you mean Noah? My dog got really sick out of nowhere, so he’s helping me nurse it back to health.”
I knew who she was.
Alice, Noah’s childhood friend.
“Josie, just be patient. Your family’s already so sick, what difference does a couple more minutes make?
“And besides, Noah has to take care of me too. I’m feeling pretty down, and he promised to make me some late-night snacks to cheer me up.”
A heavy weight pressed down on my chest, making it hard to breathe.
Clenching my teeth, I spat out my words slowly, “Didn’t he say he’d bring the medicine right away? Where is it?”
I could taste blood in my mouth as I finished speaking.
A moment of silence passed before Noah’s voice came through.
“It’s just some medicine, right? Why are you so worked up? Can’t you see I’m busy? I’ll have my assistant bring it over later.”
“Noah…” I choked on my words, desperation coating my voice. “My parents’ lives are on the line. Please, hurry.”
“Yeah, yeah, I got it. You’re driving me crazy.”
Then he hung up.
Half an hour later, the doctor approached, looking worried.
“Has the medicine arrived yet?” he asked urgently.
I was frantic with worry.
I tried calling Noah again.
This time, he answered with fury.
“What is your problem? Alice’s dog is seriously ill, and it could die any moment. Why do you keep calling me? I’m warning you, if anything happens to her dog, you’ll regret it!”
I sobbed, “Noah, my parents’ medicine…”
“Shut up!” Noah roared and slammed down the phone.
I was left utterly shattered, collapsing on the hospital floor, sobbing uncontrollably.
