After Nine Years of Love, We Still Separated
Chapter 2
I followed Charles to a ward.
He rushed forward with an anxious look on his face and pulled the female student, Hailey Myers, into his arms.
She said she was going to die, but obediently let Charles embrace her.
The several comrades who followed behind were all surprised when they saw the girl held in Charles' arms.
Yet no one said a word more.
"Why don't you cherish yourself? Why do you seek death?"
Hailey looked at me provocatively and snuggled into his arms again. "I have an art exam next month and now I'm disfigured. I have nothing left, everything is ruined, wuwuwu~"
As if there was no one around, they would hug each other, like a pair of star-crossed doves.
In fact, she only had a fingernail-sized blister on her forehead and after being treated, it would heal without leaving any scar.
I suddenly remembered the day before the fire broke out.
Charles led the team to inspect the fire protection facilities in our mall and had a few conversations with Hailey in the corner.
As the mall manager and girlfriend of Charles, I naturally asked a few more questions.
Unexpectedly, Hailey cried and accused me of humiliating her on the spot and even Charles accused me of being suspicious and jealous.
But I was just asking normally whether there were any safety hazards.
At first, before the fire spread, Hailey volunteered to evacuate the crowd and told me that the emergency button was located in the compartment on the third floor.
I ran to the third floor only to find that the door was locked and there was nowhere to escape.
When I was almost choked to death by the thick smoke, it was Charles' teammates who heard my faint cries for help and kicked the door open in an extremely urgent moment.
I saw the crossbeam above Charles' head was about to collapse, so I tried my best to stand up and push him away.
He backed away, hit the pillar and fell unconscious. After he woke up, he kept accusing me that I should not have pushed him.
In my previous life, I was deeply in love with him and I comforted myself by saying that Charles must have been too responsible and that he was just angry with me because he could not save everyone.
Going back to the past, I came to my sense.
Charles actually resented me because he could not rescue Hailey in time.
I stared at the pair of love bird in front of me coldly and turned around to leave.
Surprisingly, Hailey stopped me and shouted. "Serena, why did you lock me out when the fire broke out?"
Hearing this, Charles instantly exploded and glared at me. "Could it be that you are holding a grudge against her just because I said a few more words to her the day before and you want to kill her on purpose!"
His heart and mind were filled with the girl. He completely forgot that when he found me, I was also locked in the fire scene by a door, so how could I have the chance to hurt anyone?
I felt completely heartbroken and did not want to continue arguing with them. "If you think I want to harm you, then call the police. I believe the police have their own judgment."
Hailey timidly hid behind him and said, "The fire has destroyed the surveillance footage. How could we possibly find evidence?"
"As long as you apologize to me, I didn't ask you to do anything excessive."
The more she spoke, the more aggrieved she felt and her tears fell like waterfall.
Charles was heartbroken that he immediately turned around and yelled at me. "Apologize to her right now! Didn't you hear me?"
Everyone was shocked by Charles' words.
Regardless of whether there was evidence or not, I was his rightful girlfriend in terms of closeness. However, he stood in opposition to me without hesitation and even asked me to admit to this unfounded charge.
He once held my hand and proudly introduced me in front of all his comrades. "Guys, let me introduce you to my girlfriend, Serena Lincoln. She's the girl I will marry in the future. Don't hesitate to greet her whenever you meet her."
At that time, the sweetness and excitement seemed to be still there, but the man in front of me had already become unrecognizable.
I sneered and said, "I still say the same thing as before. If you suspect that I want to harm her, you can call the police right now."
"You ...." Charles wanted to retort, but I immediately interrupted him by saying, "Also, we are breaking up. Please move out of my house."
Before my parents passed away, they left all their property to me. During our passionate love, considering Charles' low salary, I took the initiative to invite him to live in my family's vacant villa.
Now that we had broken up, of course, he had to get out of my house.
Charles was taken aback for a moment, then he became angry. "Can you say it again!"
I rolled my eyes lazily and repeated. "Are you deaf? Let's break up and then you get out of my house right now!"
He was annoyed for a moment, then became arrogant again. “After saying so much, isn't it still to pin me down? Saying break up on your lips, don't you still wear the necklace I gave you all the time?”
"I know you lack love, but you can't use this as a base for making unreasonable troubles. Not everyone can tolerate you all the time. You just need to apologize to her now and we'll be fine, okay?" He spoke in a condescending tone, as if giving me a helping hand.
However, I sneered as I threw the necklace to the ground and let out all the hurt and anger that had built up in my heart.
It was the gift Charles bought me with his first salary after he started working.
Before, I accidentally lost this necklace. It took me several sleepless days and nights to find it back and I was even hospitalized for exhaustion.
Everyone knew how much I valued this necklace and knew that I would never easily take it off.
But now, facing Charles' incredulous look, I stepped on it fiercely. “Can we break up now?”
