Chapter 4

The pulmonology clinic smelled like antiseptic and lavender air freshener. Liam sat on the exam table, swinging his legs. The paper crinkled under him. Dr. Hale listened to his lungs with the stethoscope, nodding slowly. "Much better," he said. "The new medication is working. Keep it consistent."

I nodded. I'd already set alarms on my phone. Morning dose. Evening dose. I wasn't taking chances.

The nurse—young, efficient, kind—made notes on her tablet. "We'll schedule a follow-up in two weeks," she said. "Just to monitor."

"Thank you," I said.

Liam reached for my hand. His fingers were small and warm. I squeezed back.

That's when I heard the heels.

Sharp clicks on tile. Confident. Unhurried. I turned.

Kaylani stood in the doorway. She wore cream silk and tailored trousers. Her hair was perfect. Her smile was perfect. She carried a gift bag—glossy, expensive, tied with ribbon.

"Brynn," she said warmly. "I'm so glad I caught you."

The nurse looked up. Dr. Hale glanced over his shoulder. Kaylani stepped into the room like she belonged there.

"I brought something for Liam." She held up the bag. "From Tyler. He's been so worried."

Liam's eyes went to the bag. Kids always look at presents. I didn't move.

Kaylani set the bag on the counter and crouched down to Liam's level. "Hi, sweetheart," she said softly. "Your dad wanted to make sure you had something to cheer you up."

Liam looked at me. I kept my face still.

Kaylani straightened and turned to the nurse. Her voice stayed warm. Pleasant. "I'm a close family friend," she said. "I've been helping out during this difficult time."

The nurse nodded politely. She didn't know. Why would she?

Kaylani glanced at Dr. Hale. "Doctor, I was reading an article recently. About childhood asthma." She tilted her head. "It said stress in the home can be a significant trigger. Children absorb their mother's anxiety, don't they? It's so well-documented."

Dr. Hale's expression didn't change. "Environmental factors can play a role," he said carefully. "But this was a standard acute episode. Well-managed."

Kaylani smiled. "Of course. I just worry." She looked at me. Her eyes were bright and empty. "We all want what's best for Liam."

The nurse glanced at me. Just a flicker. A question she didn't ask.

Kaylani reached out and patted Liam's head. Her hand lingered. "Feel better, sweetheart," she said. Then she looked at me again. "Take care of yourself, Brynn. You look exhausted."

She walked out. The heels clicked down the hall. The sound faded.

I stood there. My hands were at my sides. My face was calm. Inside, something cold and sharp settled into place.

The nurse cleared her throat. "Mrs. Morrison, if there's anything you need—"

"We're fine," I said quietly. "Thank you."

I took Liam's hand. We left the gift bag on the counter.

Back at the hotel, I opened my laptop. I created a new document. I titled it *Hospital Encounter - November 14, 3:47 PM*. I wrote down everything. What Kaylani said. What the nurse's face looked like. The exact phrasing about maternal anxiety. The way she touched Liam's head. I noted the time, the location, the witnesses present.

I saved it. I backed it up.

Then I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at the wall.

Liam was watching cartoons on the other bed. His breathing was easy. His color was good. He laughed at something on the screen.

I picked up my phone. I scrolled to my mother's contact. My thumb hovered over the name.

I hadn't called her—really called her—in over a year. We'd exchanged emails about business favors. Polite, transactional messages. But we hadn't spoken. Not like this.

I pressed call.

It rang once. Twice.

"Brynn." Her voice was immediate. Sharp. Awake.

"Mom," I said. My voice was steady. Quiet. "Something is happening."

Silence on the other end. Not empty silence. The kind that listens.

"I need you to know," I said.

I didn't explain everything. I didn't ask for help. I just said it.

Another pause. Then: "Tell me when."

Not *what happened*. Not *are you okay*. Just: *Tell me when.*

"Soon," I said.

"Marcus is on standby," she said. "He'll move when you're ready."

"Okay."

"Brynn." Her voice shifted. Softer. Just slightly. "I'm here."

I closed my eyes. "I know."

The line went quiet. Neither of us hung up. We stayed there for a moment. Connected. Silent.

Then she said, "Call me tomorrow."

"I will."

She hung up. I set the phone down.

Liam looked over at me. "Who was that?"

"Grandma," I said.

He smiled. "I like Grandma."

"Me too," I said.

I pulled him close. He leaned into me, warm and small and safe. I rested my chin on top of his head and watched the cartoon. I didn't see what was on the screen. I was thinking about the document on my laptop. The sixty-two pages. The seven years.

I was thinking about the call I'd just made.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my left wrist. I held it there.

Then I let go.
