Chapter 2

The video found me at three in the morning. I was sitting in the hospital chair with my phone in my lap, watching Liam's chest rise and fall. The nurse had just checked his vitals. His oxygen levels were stable. His breathing was steady. I should have felt relief. Instead, I felt numb.

The notification lit up my screen. A message from a college friend I hadn't spoken to in years: *Is this you?* Below it, a link. I clicked it before I could stop myself.

The video started with my face. I was in the ER hallway, gripping a nurse's arm, my voice sharp and desperate. "He can't breathe. Why is no one helping him?" The camera shook. Someone laughed off-screen. The caption appeared in bold white text: *Trophy wife manufactures son's asthma attack for sympathy and attention. Staff confirm child was never in real danger.*

I watched it twice. The first time, I didn't understand what I was seeing. The second time, I did. Every frame of context had been stripped away. The part where Liam's lips were blue. The part where the doctor called it a near-fatal episode. The part where I carried him down seventeen flights of stairs because the elevator was blocked. Gone. What remained was a woman who looked hysterical. Unhinged. Dangerous.

I scrolled to the comments. They came in waves.

*Toxic mother.*

*Munchausen by proxy.*

*Someone call CPS.*

*Psycho housewife energy.*

The phrasing was identical across dozens of accounts. The timestamps clustered in suspicious patterns. Bot networks. Coordinated harassment. I knew what I was looking at. I'd seen my mother dismantle operations like this in boardrooms. I started screenshotting. My hands didn't shake. My face didn't move. I saved every comment, every username, every timestamp. I organized them into a folder on my phone labeled *Evidence*. Then I put the phone down and sat in the dark.

Liam stirred in his sleep. I reached over and touched his forehead. Still cool. Still safe. I pulled his blanket up around his shoulders and watched his face until the sun came up.

My phone buzzed at eight. A text from Tyler. No greeting. No question about Liam. Just one line: *Maybe if you'd spent less time being dramatic and more time being a real mother, this wouldn't keep happening.*

I read it three times. The words didn't change. I typed a response—*He almost died*—then deleted it. I typed another—*Where were you?*—and deleted that too. Finally, I wrote nothing. I turned the phone face-down on the table and left it there.

That night, Kaylani posted a photo. Candlelit table. Wine glasses. Tyler's hand at the edge of the frame, his watch catching the light. The caption read: *Sometimes you just need to breathe.* The location tag said it was their favorite restaurant. The one we used to go to for anniversaries. I stared at the image until the screen went dark. Then I pulled Liam's blanket higher and sat in the chair beside his bed until morning came again.

Three days later, the hospital discharged Liam with a new inhaler and strict instructions. I drove him back to the Seattle house to pack his things. He was quiet in the car. His fingers played with the strap of his seatbelt. "Mom?" he said softly. "Are we going somewhere?"

"Just for a little while," I said. "Somewhere quieter."

He nodded and looked out the window. He didn't ask where his father was. He'd stopped asking that a long time ago.

The house was silent when we walked in. I sent Liam upstairs to gather his favorite toys. I went to his room to pack clothes. That's when I heard her voice. Loretta. In the living room. Talking to someone on the phone.

I walked to the doorway and stopped. She was sitting in the armchair by the window, a velvet jewelry box open on her lap. Inside it, the Morrison family heirloom necklace. Victorian-era diamonds set in gold. She'd told me about it during our first year of marriage. "This will be yours one day," she'd said, touching the pendant with careful fingers. "It's tradition. Passed from mother to son's wife."

Now she held it up to the light, turning it slowly. "I'm having it resized," she said into the phone. Her tone was casual. Pleasant. Like she was discussing the weather. "Kaylani has such a delicate neck. It'll suit her better."

I stood in the doorway of the house where I'd cooked her low-sodium meals for four years. Where I'd sat beside her hospital bed during chemotherapy, holding a basin when the nausea got too bad. Where I'd slept in a recliner for three nights straight when her fever spiked and the doctors weren't sure she'd make it. She didn't look up. She didn't acknowledge me at all.

I turned and walked upstairs. I packed Liam's bag in silence. His shirts. His pajamas. His inhaler and medication. When I came back down, Loretta was still on the phone. Still holding the necklace. I walked past her without a word. Liam followed me out the door.

In the car, he buckled his seatbelt and looked at me. "Are we coming back?"

I started the engine. "No, baby. We're not."

He nodded. He didn't seem surprised. I pulled out of the driveway and didn't look back.
