Chapter 4

The shift change happened at four. I left through the side door with my bag over my shoulder, keys already in my hand. The parking lot stretched out under a sky so white with heat it hurt to look at. My car was parked in the back row. I kept my head down and walked.

Behind me, the door opened again. Footsteps on gravel. I didn't turn around.

Sloane's voice carried across the lot. "Tessa, wait—"

I kept walking.

Then I heard it. The skid of gravel. A sharp intake of breath. The sound of a body hitting pavement.

I stopped and turned.

Sloane was on the ground ten feet behind me, near the gap between the dumpsters where the security camera didn't reach. She sat with her legs twisted to one side, cradling her left wrist against her chest. Her face was already wet.

"Oh my god," she said. Her voice broke perfectly. "You pushed me."

I stared at her. "What?"

"You pushed me!" Louder now. Tears streamed down her cheeks. "I was just trying to talk to you and you—"

The side door banged open. Carla came out first, then Marcus from logistics, then half the day shift pouring into the lot like they'd been waiting for a cue. They surrounded Sloane in a loose circle. Someone knelt beside her. Someone else asked if she was okay.

I stood there with my keys in my hand.

"I didn't touch her," I said.

Nobody looked at me.

Carla pulled out her phone. "I'm calling Bryson."

Sloane made a small wounded sound and clutched her wrist tighter. "It's fine. I'm fine. I don't want to make a big deal—"

"You're hurt," Carla said firmly. "He needs to know."

I looked at Sloane. At the way she held her wrist. At the angle of her body on the ground. At the tears that fell in perfect timing.

She looked back at me. And for just a second—so brief I might have imagined it—her mouth curved.

Then Bryson's truck pulled into the lot.

He got out fast, door slamming, boots on gravel. He went straight to Sloane and crouched beside her. She leaned into him and said something too quiet for me to hear. He looked at her wrist. He touched her shoulder. Then he stood up and turned to face me.

Twelve people stood in that parking lot. Twelve witnesses. The West Texas wind kicked up dust and moved it across the pavement in thin streams.

Bryson's voice was cold. Precise. The voice of someone who had made a decision before he arrived.

"What the hell is wrong with you?"

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.

"This is unacceptable," he said. "This is exactly the kind of behavior I've been hearing about. The jealousy. The hostility. I've tried to be patient, Tessa. I've tried to give you space to adjust. But this—" He gestured at Sloane, still on the ground, still cradling her wrist. "This crosses a line."

"I didn't push her," I said. My voice sounded thin. Far away.

"She's on the ground," Bryson said flatly. "You were the only person near her."

"I was walking to my car."

"And she's hurt."

I looked at the faces around me. Carla. Marcus. People I'd worked beside for five years. Nobody met my eyes.

"I didn't touch her," I said again.

Bryson pulled something from his pocket. My access badge. The one that opened the housing unit, the cafeteria, the building doors. He must have gone to security before he came here. He must have planned this.

"Your housing access is revoked," he said. "Effective immediately. Your meal stipend too. You can have them back when you apologize to Sloane."

The wind moved dust across the lot. Somewhere a rig motor coughed and died.

"On your knees," he added.

I looked at him. At the man I followed here. The man I loved. The man who stood in a parking lot with twelve witnesses and stripped me of the last things I had, without asking a single question, without one second of doubt.

I looked at Sloane. She watched me from the ground, her face wet, her wrist cradled like something broken.

I looked at the faces in the circle. At Carla. At Marcus. At people who had laughed at me in the break room and pretended I didn't exist at lunch and never once asked if I was okay.

I pressed my thumbnail into my index finger until I felt the skin go white.

Then I turned around and walked to my car.

Bryson called my name. I didn't stop.

I got in. I started the engine. I drove out of the lot and didn't look in the rearview mirror.

I drove straight to my quarters. I unlocked the door and stood in the middle of the room. The duffel bag was still on the bed where I'd left it. The documents. The book with the rubber band holding it together.

I picked up my phone. The Greyhound ticket was already purchased. Last bus: 9:47 PM.

I looked at the time. Four thirty-seven.

I had five hours.

I pulled the duffel toward me and started packing.
