Chapter 2

The break room became a place I avoided. Not officially. Not in a way anyone could point to. I just started taking my coffee back to my desk, timing my arrivals for the minutes between shifts when the room sat empty except for the hum of the ancient refrigerator and the burnt smell that never quite left the air.

But I still heard things.

Carla's voice carried. She had that particular talent—the ability to pitch a comment just loud enough that it traveled down hallways, around corners, into spaces where it could do the most damage without ever being called out as intentional.

"I'm just saying, if I were cooking and cleaning for free, I'd at least get my name on a lease."

Laughter. Always laughter.

I kept my head down at my desk and ran the same data analysis three times because I kept losing my place. My thumbnail dug into my index finger until the skin went white.

Sloane brought banana bread on a Tuesday.

She set it on the break room counter during the morning shift change, still warm in a glass dish with a kitchen towel tucked around the edges. I came in to refill my water bottle and found half the day staff clustered around it like she'd brought gold.

"Oh my god, Sloane, this is amazing," someone said.

"It's nothing." Sloane's voice was warm, modest. "Bryson mentioned he'd been craving it, so I thought I'd make extra for everyone."

Carla took a second piece. "You're too good to us."

"I just like taking care of people," Sloane said.

I filled my bottle at the sink. Nobody looked at me. I was wallpaper. I was the water cooler. I was something you walked past on your way to somewhere better.

I went back to my desk and didn't eat lunch.

The next week it was enchiladas. The week after that, a pot of chili that filled the office with the smell of cumin and made everyone gather around Sloane's desk to thank her. She smiled and demurred and mentioned, just in passing, that Bryson had requested it specifically.

I started working late. Not because there was more work. Because the building emptied after six and I could move through it without performing normalcy. I could sit at my desk and breathe without wondering who was watching, who was laughing, who was updating Sloane on my location.

One night I came back to my quarters and stood in the doorway for a long time before I turned on the light.

The space was small. Functional. A bed, a desk, a narrow closet, a bathroom the size of a phone booth. I'd tried to make it home when I first arrived—put up photos, bought a lamp with a soft bulb, kept a plant on the windowsill that died within a month because nothing grew here. Now it just looked temporary. Like a hotel room someone had been living in too long.

I opened the closet and pulled down the duffel bag I'd brought from New York five years ago. It still had a baggage tag from JFK zip-tied to the handle. I set it on the bed and stared at it.

I wasn't packing. Not yet. I was just looking.

I opened my desk drawer and took out the folder with my important documents. Passport. Birth certificate. Social security card. College diploma. I set them on the bed next to the duffel.

Then I went to the bookshelf—two particleboard planks held up by cinder blocks—and ran my fingers along the spines. Most of the books I'd bought used from a thrift store in town, just to have something to do on the weekends when the silence got too loud. But there was one I'd carried with me from New York.

Their Eyes Were Watching God. The cover was creased and faded. The spine had cracked years ago and I'd wrapped a rubber band around it to hold the pages together. I'd read it so many times I could recite whole passages from memory.

I held it in both hands.

Then I set it on the bed next to the documents.

I stood there for a while. The wind outside rattled the window. Somewhere in the distance a rig motor growled and went silent.

I wasn't ready to leave. Not yet. There was still a part of me that wanted to believe I'd misunderstood. That Bryson would come to the door and explain everything in a way that made sense. That the woman I'd been for five years—loyal, patient, willing to wait—would be rewarded for waiting just a little longer.

But some other part of me, quieter and deeper, had already started sorting.

What mattered. What I would take. What I could carry if I had to leave with nothing but what fit in one bag.

I looked at the book on the bed. The documents. The duffel with the JFK tag still attached.

Then I turned off the light and lay down in the dark, fully dressed, and listened to the wind.
