Chapter 4

The smell of dry paper and cold tea filled the small back room of the valley’s trading post.

Outside, a light dusting of early snow powdered the frosted windowpanes. Inside, three pack elders sat across the pine table from me, their shoulders hunched under heavy wool coats. These were the leaders of the small boundary packs—White Pine, Red Run, and Bitter Creek. They were starving for resources. Their winter stores were low, their hunting grounds were shrinking, and every year their strongest young wolves drifted south toward bigger packs with deeper pockets.

I smoothed the parchment on the table between us.

"The Crownfang Bloodline is prepared to fund the southern timber roads, build two regional grain silos, and supply medical herbs through the next five winters," I said, keeping my voice level and clear. "In exchange, the Crownfang alliance requires open trade corridors, joint border patrols, and your formal signatures entering into a Lycan protectorate."

The elder from White Pine leaned forward, squinting at the ledger. "A protectorate? From royal bloodlines? We haven't seen a Lycan delegate in this valley in twenty years."

"You are seeing one now," I replied evenly.

Beside him, the leader of Red Run was already reaching for the pen. His hands were weathered, his pack’s desperation clear in the deep lines around his eyes. "If Crownfang grain feeds my pups before the hard frost, I don't care where the gold comes from."

He signed. A moment later, White Pine took the pen and scratched his name onto the vellum line.

Only Alder, the Alpha of Bitter Creek, held back. He tapped his thick, calloused knuckles against the grain of the wood, his brow furrowed.

"What about Ashwood?" Alder asked, glancing toward the southern door. "Brantley just merged his eastern boundary with Iron Ridge. He's been claiming authority over this whole corridor. If he finds out Bitter Creek signed a competing territorial claim, he’ll cut off our downriver timber access before spring."

I looked at Alder. My expression didn't shift. "Brantley does not govern Crownfang affairs. His merger is his concern. This alliance is yours."

Alder hesitated, setting the pen down on the inkstand. "Let me think on it until tomorrow's harvest gathering. Everyone will be in the pavilion. I'll sign then, once I see how the room leans."

"Tomorrow, then," I agreed, rolling the document and sliding it into my leather case.

I didn't argue. I didn't push. A Lycan sovereign never begged for allegiance. If Alder wanted to measure Ashwood against Crownfang, he would have his answer soon enough.

Across the valley that evening, the pre-gathering feast was already underway at the regional council hall. Long tables were stacked with roasted venison and heavy ale, though the mood beneath the high timber rafters was anything but festive.

Brantley had caught wind of my meeting within two hours of its closing.

He stood near the central hearth, a pewter mug sloshing in his fist, surrounded by his newly acquired Iron Ridge partners. His face was flushed with drink and raw, offended vanity.

"It's a joke," Brantley barked, his voice ringing loud over the scraping of iron plates. He didn't care who heard him. He wanted everyone to listen. "You're listening to a wolfless stray who couldn't even keep her place in my pack! She shows up with forged papers from 'anonymous royal backers,' and you old fools jump like pups at dinner."

Alder from Bitter Creek stood near the edge of the firelight, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on Brantley with quiet calculation. Several younger wolves nodded along with Brantley's bluster, eager to curry favor with the biggest Alpha in the room. But older wolves exchanged uneasy glances.

"The valley answers to the Ashwood Alliance," Brantley snarled, slamming his mug onto the nearest plank table, spilling bitter dark beer across the wood. "No outside treaties. No stray Omegas playing diplomat. Any pack that signs paper with her is cutting their own throat."

He grinned broadly, soaking in the fearful quiet of the hall. He was certain he had crushed it. He believed an Alpha’s shout was enough to rewrite reality.

While Brantley held court by the fire, Lana was slipping through the shadows behind the packhouse storage sheds.

The air was bitterly cold, carrying the sharp sting of frozen iron. She met a shadowy figure by the old root cellar door, passing over a thick wad of bills for a tiny glass vial wrapped in oiled cloth.

Inside the vial was a pale, honey-colored oil.

It was concentrated *Aconitum lycoctonum*—northern wolfsbane. My mother had catalogued this exact variant in her journal fifteen years ago. It was the most insidious variant in the valley: odorless, practically tasteless, and slow to reveal itself. In young wolves, it mimicked an ordinary fever for the first hour. By the second hour, it attacked the nervous system, bringing on violent, suffocating seizures.

Lana turned the small vial in her gloved fingers, her face tight with venomous focus. She knew the dosages. She didn't want the pup dead on the spot—that would bring immediate Council investigators swarming before she could frame the narrative. She wanted a spectacle. She wanted an unfit mother whose sickly brat collapsed in front of the entire assembly, proving Fallon was an incompetent, cursed Omega who couldn't keep her own blood alive.

Lana slipped the vial into the inner pocket of her fur coat and walked back toward Brantley's quarters.

Brantley was just coming up the hallway, stripping off his heavy leather coat, his eyes bright with arrogant triumph.

"Handled the elders," he grunted, reaching to pull her against him. "They won't dare touch her papers."

Lana stepped into his arms, pressing her cheek against his shoulder. Her smile was small, sharp, and entirely devoid of warmth.

"Don't worry about the papers, Brantley," she whispered softly against his neck. "I’ll handle the Fallon problem tomorrow at the feast. You won't have to look at either of them ever again."

Brantley didn't ask what she meant. He didn't ask how, or what was in her pocket, or what line she was about to cross.

He just smirked, kissed her forehead, and let her walk away.
