Chapter 1

The mate bond tore at exactly eight o'clock on a Friday evening, splitting my chest open like a hot wire pulled through raw meat.

Liam Voss didn't look at me when he said it. He stood on the dais of the great hall, his chin high, speaking to the two hundred wolves who had answered his mandatory summons.

"I, Liam Voss, Alpha of Ironclaw, reject you, Claire Ashford, as my mate and Luna."

He poured the Alpha tone into the final word. The command slammed into my skull like a sledgehammer, driving my knees into the cold flagstones before my brain could tell them to hold. The mark on the left side of my neck flared white-hot, sizzled, and then went instantly, horribly cold. It felt like a heavy door slamming shut inside an empty room.

Beside him, Stella Crane stepped out from behind the carved pillars. Her scent rolled over the platform—sickly sweet, like overripe peaches rotting in sugar. She leaned against Liam's arm with delicate frailty, her fingers clutching his sleeve.

"Stella is my chosen mate," Liam announced to the silent room. "Her wolf suffers from a degenerative decay. Standard medicine cannot heal it. Under pack emergency law, I am authorizing an immediate Luna-essence transfusion to save her life."

On my knees, staring up at him, the whole lie fell into place with sickening clarity. This was never an assembly. It was an execution disguised as an official decree. For five years, I had poured tea, patched warrior wounds, and managed his pack while my own dormant aura silently fed his territory. He thought I was an empty vessel. Now he was going to drain the shell.

The Alpha tone still pressed my throat toward the floor, but something deep in my gut refused the stone.

It wasn't panic. It was rage—an ancient, molten fury that had never spoken to me before, kicking violently against my ribs.

I put my hands flat on the floor and stood up.

My knees shook, but I forced my spine straight. Whispers rippled through the rows of warriors. They had never seen an unawakened wolf break an Alpha's vocal hold. Liam's dark eyes narrowed as I walked up the three stone steps toward the dais. He opened his mouth, probably to bark another command.

I didn't give him the chance.

I stepped inside his guard and slapped him across the face.

The crack bounced off the stone walls like a gunshot. His head snapped sideways. A bright red handprint bloomed across his sharp cheekbone.

For one beautiful second, the great Alpha of Ironclaw looked completely stunned. Stella gasped and shrank backward, burying her face against his shoulder.

Liam turned his face back to me, his jaw rolling in that ugly, tight circle he used whenever someone challenged his absolute rule. He didn't yell. His voice dropped to a razor-sharp whisper.

"Marcus. Take her."

Beta Marcus stepped up behind me before my hand even lowered. Two heavy warriors grabbed my arms, pinning my shoulders and dragging my feet off the floor.

I didn't thrash. I didn't scream. As they hauled me toward the side doors, my thumb rose out of habit, pressing against the mate mark on my collarbone. The skin was dead and numb. Five years of devotion, gone in ten seconds. Around us, the pack members averted their eyes. The Delta guards I had bandaged, the elders I had fed—every single one of them stared at the floor.

They hauled me down two flights of stairs, past the storage pantries, deep into the foundation where the air smelled of stale lime and earth. Marcus shoved me through a heavy iron hatch into a cell I had never seen in five years of living in the pack house.

"Don't make this harder than it has to be, Claire," Marcus muttered.

The heavy lock turned with an iron click that severed the rest of my life.

The cell was small, lit only by a bare yellow bulb in the ceiling. The walls weren't stone—they were plated in polished, dull silver.

I walked over and pressed my bare palm against the metal.

Silver was supposed to blister werewolf flesh on contact. It was supposed to send shifted wolves screaming into shock. But against my skin, the cool sheet only tingled. It pressed down on a low, steady hum that had lived in my blood for as long as I could remember, quiet and waiting.

Then, at the base of my spine, something shifted.

A surge of heavy, golden warmth rolled upward, filling the hollow ache Liam's broken bond had left behind. It wasn't a voice yet, but it was massive. Unbroken. And furious.

They thought I was an empty human orphan. They had no idea what was sleeping inside my bones.

Above my head, the rusted iron ventilation grate groaned. The air ducts ran straight up to the master quarters on the third floor. I stepped under the vent and listened.

Liam's voice came through the pipe, flat and clinical. "Strip the second-floor bedroom. Her clothes, the dried teas, every book. Burn it all behind the shed. Stella is moving into the Luna suite tonight."

"Liam..." Stella's soft, calculated tremble floated down the shaft. "Dorian is setting up his equipment in the sub-level now. The extraction... it won't kill her, will it? I don't want blood on my hands."

Liam's jaw clicked shut above. I could picture the roll of his neck. "It will take what it takes to save you. Dorian says tomorrow night."

Footsteps approached the upper vent. Marcus's voice cut in, tight with sudden tension. "Alpha. The border patrol at the eastern river... four warriors just collapsed during perimeter sweep. Slower reflexes, dizzy spells. The Gamma says it feels like an aura drop."

"Static from the broken bond," Liam snapped, dismissing it instantly. "It'll pass once Stella takes the mark. Go prep the restraints."

The vent fell quiet, followed by the faint scratch of a sulfur match being struck. A thin wisp of smoke drifted down through the iron slats, carrying the scent of burning cotton and my chamomile leaves.

Down in the dark, my hand dropped from the wall. The warmth in my blood coiled tight, watching the door.
