Chapter 3

The drive away from the high-rise was dead silent.

We crossed out of the city and climbed deep into the northern mountains, following a winding private road cut through dense pine. The heavy black SUV was warm, but my muscles remained coiled tight. Hudson had left me with a permanent reflex: anticipate the blow before it lands.

August sat behind the wheel. He drove with one hand on the steering wheel, his posture easy, his face unreadable. He hadn’t tried to touch me. He hadn't asked a single invasive question. That unnerved me more than violence would have.

I stared out the passenger window, watching the snowy pines blur past. Finally, I couldn't stand the quiet.

"What do you want from me?" I asked. My voice sounded flat, stripped of color.

August didn't flinch. He kept his eyes on the mountain road ahead. A second passed, then two.

"Nothing you haven't already decided to give," he said quietly.

I pressed the pads of my fingertips together, tapping them rhythmically against each other in my lap. I didn't know what to do with that answer. With Hudson, every breath had a price. Every meal, every shared bed, every drop of medicine I brewed had been a transaction. August was offering nothing to bargain against. It felt like stepping onto thin ice.

A quarter-mile later, we passed through massive iron gates set into towering stone walls. The Silverfang compound was a fortress. It didn't look like Ironvale’s sprawling, ostentatious estate. It was ancient, built of slate and dark timber, radiating an unyielding, military authority.

When the car stopped, August opened my door, keeping a careful two feet of space between us.

"Maren will look over you," he said simply. "You need to rest."

The compound infirmary was quiet, smelling cleanly of eucalyptus and rubbing alcohol. Maren had me sit on the edge of an examination table. As she pressed a cold stethoscope to my ribs, the last clinging frost of Hudson’s wolfsbane finally dissolved from my bloodstream.

And when the chemical haze cleared, my mind shattered open.

Images slammed into my skull like hot shrapnel.

*Flames roaring against a night sky. The bitter, suffocating reek of burning white cedar. A woman's voice—soft, desperate, trembling with fierce love—whispering, "Run, little bird, run." A courtyard filled with yellow roses.*

I gasped, clutching my temples as the memories tore through my head.

Beneath the memories, something far more terrifying cracked awake. Deep in the dark center of my chest, behind the wall of trauma that had locked me away for seven years, something vast moved. It wasn't the small, broken wolf Hudson had mocked.

It was massive.

A wolf of pure, blinding silver fur stretched its limbs within my spirit, pressing against my ribs with suffocating weight. The raw pressure of its presence sent a shockwave through my physical body.

The diagnostic monitors on the counter screamed. The digital readouts spiked into wild red lines. The glass vials on the metal tray beside me rattled violently, vibrating from the sudden surge of energy bleeding off my skin.

Maren stumbled back, dropping her clipboard. "Her aura..." she breathed, staring at the instruments in pure disbelief. "That isn't possible. A wolfless she-wolf can't produce a seismic tremor."

I pulled my knees to my chest, trembling, trying to hold the beast inside.

In the doorway, August stood perfectly still. His eyes were dark, glowing with a soft, amber heat. He didn't come closer. He didn't demand explanations. He simply watched me with an aching patience, refusing to lay the crushing weight of a royal identity onto shoulders that were still shaking.

An hour later, the trembling stopped, but the restless fire in my blood didn't. I couldn't stay in that sterile room.

I slipped out into the courtyard and found the compound’s greenhouse conservatory. The moment I crossed the threshold, the humid air hit my lungs, rich with soil and damp leaves.

My hands stopped shaking.

The garden beds were disorganized, planted without care for synergy. Without thinking, I knelt in the dirt. My hands moved on pure muscle memory, a skill older than my amnesia, older than Hudson's seven years of lies.

I began sorting the plants by their medicinal purpose. I stripped yarrow and comfrey for wound-binding, bunching them in neat bundles. I separated the feverfew and willow bark for systemic fevers. In the far corner, my fingers found snakeroot, rowan, and wild charcoal moss—the specific herbs used for rapid toxin purging.

I worked with a blinding, effortless precision. My mind was completely quiet. I didn't care that dirt was getting under my fingernails or that my skirt was smeared with earth.

"Fascinating," a quiet voice said.

I looked up, startled. Maren stood at the end of the aisle. She was leaning against a wooden trellis, a leather-bound notebook in her hands, quietly documenting every single bundle I had arranged.

Before I could apologize, shouting erupted from the courtyard outside.

"Clear the way!" a guard barked. "Get Maren! Now!"

Two warriors rushed through the doors toward the infirmary wing, carrying a third man between them. The injured warrior was pale as chalk, his breathing shallow and wet. His left arm was exposed—and completely black. A deep, jagged claw mark cut from his wrist to his elbow, and the veins surrounding it were swollen, pulsing with thick, necrotic sludge.

"Rogue ambush at the northern perimeter," one warrior shouted as they laid him onto an open cot. "Blade was dipped in concentrated wolfsbane. It’s hit his arterial line!"

Maren rushed over, barking orders. She grabbed a silver syringe and injected a standard neutralizing agent directly into his shoulder. The warrior convulsed, screaming in agony as his body rejected the treatment. The black veins didn't recede. They climbed higher, creeping toward his throat.

"The toxin is bound to his life force," Maren said, her voice tight with panic. "The synthetic anti-venom won't hold. His heart will stop in two minutes."

Something inside me snapped.

I didn't think. I didn't ask permission.

I pushed past the crowded warriors and dropped to my knees beside the cot.

"Wait—what is she doing?" a guard shouted, reaching for my arm.

"Let her," a deep voice cut through the noise. August stepped into the room, his command freezing every warrior in place.

I placed my bare palms flat against the warrior's blackened flesh.

My skin met his, and the silver beast inside me surged forward. A sudden, radiant heat rushed down my arms and pooled into my hands. It wasn't pain. It was a magnetic pull.

*Out,* I commanded silently. *Give it to me.*

Under my touch, the blackened veins began to drain.

The warriors gasped. The injured man’s frantic thrashing stopped. A dark, oily liquid began seeping directly out of his pores, rising into my palms like ink. But the poison didn't enter my blood. The moment the black venom touched the surface of my skin, it dissolved into a thin, harmless dark mist, evaporating entirely into the air.

Within thirty seconds, the blackness was gone. The warrior’s flesh returned to a healthy, flushed tan. His wound was still deep, but the blood flowing from it was bright, clean crimson.

His breathing steadied. He fell into a deep, natural sleep.

I pulled my hands back, breathing hard. My chest heaved as I looked down at my clean, unstained palms.

The infirmary was tomb-silent.

Maren was frozen, her mouth slightly open, staring at me as if I were a ghost. The two warriors backed away a step, looking at me with wide, terrified awe. Drawing wolfsbane through bare flesh wasn't medicine. It wasn't a learned skill.

It was a miracle reserved for one single, legendary bloodline.

I turned my head toward the door.

August was still standing there. His massive shoulders were rigid, his hands resting loose at his sides. But his amber eyes burned with a raw, overwhelming intensity. There was no doubt left in his face. No question.

He was looking at the lost girl he had hunted through the dark for ten long years.
