Chapter 3

The Thornwall mixer was Sylvie's idea, not mine. "You need air that isn't Dawnridge air," she'd said, dragging me into a black dress two nights after I told her about Benjamin. "And free champagne."

The event hall sat on neutral ground, strung with fairy lights, packed with wolves from a dozen territories making small talk over canapés. I stood near the bar, nursing a glass I didn't intend to finish, watching Sylvie work the room like she owned it. My chest still ached, a low ember where the bond used to burn bright. I told myself I was healing. I told myself a lot of things lately.

Then the air changed.

I smelled him before I saw him — cedar and smoke, unmistakable, cutting through perfume and hors d'oeuvres like a blade through silk. Colin. Here. Uninvited, or invited and shameless enough to come anyway.

He crossed the room toward Sylvie with that easy, practiced smile, the one he used on councils and cameras. "Sylvie. Good to see you."

"Wish I could say the same." She didn't smile back.

"I was hoping you could tell me where Elena's been staying." His voice stayed light, casual, like he was asking about the weather. "She's not answering the link. I'm worried about her."

A dozen wolves nearby had gone very quiet, pretending not to listen.

Sylvie stared at him. One long, cold beat.

Then she slapped him.

The sound cracked across the hall, sharp as a gunshot. Colin's head snapped sideways, his drink sloshing over his own hand, and for one full second the entire room froze — glasses stopped midair, conversations died mid-sentence.

"She's not your concern anymore, Alpha," Sylvie said, low and even. "You made sure of that."

Colin straightened, jaw working, a red handprint blooming high on his cheek. His eyes swept the room — the staring faces, the whispers already rippling outward like water disturbed by a stone. *Rejected. Ironveil's Alpha, rejected by his own mate.* I watched the story spread in real time, watched his careful, cultivated image crack down the middle in front of wolves from three neighboring packs.

He found me across the room. For one raw second, something flickered in his face — not love, I realized. Panic. The panic of a man watching his reflection shatter.

I didn't go to him. I didn't say a word.

Sylvie took my arm and walked me straight out the side door, and I let her, my pulse hammering, my wolf stirring faintly for the first time in days — not grief this time. Something closer to grim satisfaction.

---

Benjamin Harrison arrived at the Dawnridge estate two days later, and my father's study felt smaller the moment he stepped into it.

I'd braced myself, remembering a lanky, quiet boy with careful eyes. The man who walked in wore that memory like a shadow cast by something far larger. Taller. Broader through the shoulders. He moved like every room already belonged to him, though he never once raised his voice to claim it — that was the strange part. Lycan authority didn't need volume. It simply pressed against the air, patient and absolute.

His collar shifted as he inclined his head to my father, and I caught it — a jagged line of scar tissue at his throat, pale against his skin. Twelve years old. Earned for me.

"Alpha Mason." His voice was low, deliberate. Then his dark eyes found mine, and something in them flickered — restrained, costly, gone almost before I could name it. "Elena."

"Benjamin." My own voice came out steadier than I felt.

My father gestured us to the chairs, and Benjamin sat with the unhurried composure of someone who had learned patience the hard way. He laid out the terms without flourish — a mating alliance between Dawnridge and Silvercrest, his mark on my neck, Silvercrest's resources and protection extended to my father's crumbling territory in exchange for the union of our bloodlines.

"I would give you my full protection," he said, meeting my eyes directly. "And nothing less than respect."

It was the word *respect* that undid something in me. Colin had never once used it.

"I need time," I said.

"You'll have it." No hesitation. No pressure disguised as patience, the way Colin used to do. Just a simple answer, and beneath it, that same restrained tension I couldn't quite name.

---

"I feel like a chess piece," I told Sylvie that night, curled into the window seat of my childhood room. "Traded from one Alpha's board to another."

"He's not Colin," she said, arms crossed, leaning against the doorframe. "He's Lycan royalty with a spotless reputation, and he actually *showed up*, Elena. That already puts him miles ahead." She paused, softer. "But you just ripped a ten-year bond out of your chest. Don't let duty stitch you into another one before you've healed."

I thought of the scar at his collar. The flicker in his eyes he couldn't quite hide.

"I'll see him again," I said finally. "On my own terms. Not my father's. Not the Council's."

Sylvie almost smiled. "Now that sounds like you."
