Chapter 5

Vienna Collins stood alone in the Ironveil treasury vault at three in the morning, staring at ledgers that told a story she'd hoped no one would read for another six months.

I wasn't there to see it. But later—much later, when the Lycan Council investigation would pull every scrap of Ironveil's records into evidence—Roland would describe the scene to me in the flat, precise voice of a man reporting facts he no longer felt anything about.

The stores were depleted. Not from the rogue raids, though Vienna had been counting on that as cover. The gap was older than that. It stretched back three years, into the months when she'd first started diverting pack funds into accounts Tristan didn't know existed. Small amounts at first. Then larger. Then large enough that, added together, they explained why the emergency reserves couldn't cover a single quarter of border reinforcement.

She stood there for a long time, according to the security records. Then she closed the ledger, set it back on the shelf exactly as she'd found it, and walked to her private study.

Roland told me she started two files that night. The first was a set of transfers designed to slowly refill the visible accounts—small enough that a casual review wouldn't catch the pattern, calculated to stabilize the books before Tristan's next financial audit.

The second was an insurance file. Communications. Signed authorizations. Every piece of evidence that placed Tristan's fingerprints on decisions he'd made without her—including the ones involving wolfsbane.

She did not tell him about either file.

---

Tristan called a full pack assembly on the same morning I met with Lucien's Beta and Caden.

I heard about it through Lycan intelligence channels before the assembly had ended. Caden delivered the report with his usual clinical neutrality, but I caught the flicker in his expression when he described the address's second half.

"The Alpha spoke for approximately forty minutes," Caden said. "Alpha tone deployed throughout. Content focused on your departure and its impact on pack operations."

I didn't look up from the map. "Blaming me."

"Blaming you." Caden's voice was even. "Framing your absence as a failure to fulfill the Luna role."

Lucien, standing at the window, said nothing.

"And?" I asked.

Caden paused. "Two-thirds of the way through the address, the tone strained. Several unmated she-wolves in the back of the hall did not respond to the compulsion. Multiple witnesses confirm."

I set down the map I'd been holding.

An Alpha's tone was biological. It wasn't performance—it was aura made audible, compulsion woven into sound. Unmated she-wolves were the most susceptible; their instincts responded to dominant Alpha aura before conscious thought could intervene.

If they hadn't lowered their eyes, it meant the aura behind the tone wasn't there anymore.

"The Gamma saw it," Caden added.

"He did."

"He hasn't reported it to anyone."

I pressed two fingers against the scar on my neck. Kaia stirred, quiet and watchful.

"He won't," I said.

---

Caden and I spent the rest of that morning at the estate's northern border table.

I'd read three months of patrol reports the night before. I'd cross-referenced them against the topography maps Lucien had given me access to. By the time Caden's Beta arrived, I already had two structural weaknesses circled in my notebook.

Caden walked me through the current schedule with professional efficiency. He was tall, sharp-featured, and defer to no one—the kind of Gamma whose respect was earned by outperforming him at his own work, not by rank.

I let him finish the overview. Then I pulled the map toward me.

"Here." I placed a finger on the eastern ridge. "Your patrol window closes at four-forty. The next patrol begins at four-fifty-two. That gap is small, but the terrain funnels wind from the north-northwest. Scent tracking fails there for approximately eight minutes each rotation. Rogues coordinating an approach could time a probe to that gap."

Caden's jaw tightened, but he didn't interrupt.

I moved my finger west. "And here. Your Delta rotation assumes the river crossing is impassable in winter. It isn't—not at this bend. The current slows enough between December and February that a coordinated group could cross without leaving tracks in the frost line."

Caden was silent for a beat.

Then he pulled the map toward himself, marked both points with a grease pencil, and said, "I'll have the schedule revised by end of session."

He didn't argue. He didn't verify. He simply corrected the gap.

When the meeting ended, he inclined his head to me—not deep, not ceremonial. Just enough.

"Miss Davis."

"Gamma."

He left.

Lucien, who'd been watching from the far end of the table without speaking, met my eyes.

He didn't say anything. He didn't need to.

---

The rain started that evening and didn't stop.

I was in my study reviewing the revised patrol schedules when Caden's voice came through the internal mind-link, quiet and clipped.

*Perimeter breach at the eastern gate. Not hostile. A single wolf. Human form. Standing in the rain.*

I set down my pen.

*Who?*

A pause.

*Tristan Evans.*

Kaia went absolutely still inside me.

*He's reaching through the residual pack link,* Caden continued. *Trying to find the thread to you.*

I closed my eyes.

Somewhere in the space behind my sternum, something brushed against the severed bond site—a whisper of connection, weak and desperate, trying to force itself through a channel that no longer existed.

I blocked it without a word.

The channel closed.

*He's still standing there,* Caden said.
