Chapter 2

The ceremonial hall still smelled like blood when Tristan brought Vienna back inside.

I wasn't there to see it. But Roland Voss told me later—much later, after everything collapsed—that Tristan had used Alpha tone three times in the first hour. Once to silence the murmuring. Once to order the hall cleared. Once to forbid anyone from speaking about the white wolf or the scent that had flooded the room.

The third command came out wrong. His aura flickered halfway through the sentence. Just a stutter, barely perceptible, but Roland caught it. He was standing close enough to see Tristan's jaw tighten, the micro-adjustment in his posture as he compensated for something that shouldn't have needed compensation.

Roland didn't say anything. He lowered his eyes and obeyed.

But he noticed.

Vienna moved into the Luna's quarters that same night. She redecorated by morning—new curtains, new bedding, all the soft cream tones I'd chosen replaced with deep reds and golds. She issued her first directive to the Omega staff before breakfast: the ceremonial hall was to be scrubbed clean, the bloodstains removed, and all physical evidence of the previous night erased by noon.

The Omegas complied. They always did. But they worked in silence, and when Vienna passed them in the corridors, they met her eyes for exactly as long as pack hierarchy required and not a heartbeat longer.

Vienna noticed that too. She filed it away as insubordination to be addressed later, once the pack stabilized.

The pack was not going to stabilize.

I spent three days in the forest. Not hiding—planning. My wolf and I had a lot to discuss, and she had a lot to tell me. Her name was Kaia. She was older than I'd thought possible, and she had been dormant not because she was weak but because she was waiting.

"For what?" I asked her on the second night, sitting with my back against a tree and my fingers pressed against the scar on my neck.

*For you to be ready,* she said simply. *You are now.*

On the morning of the fourth day, I walked out of the forest and straight to the Lycan Royal Estate.

I didn't look like a rogue. I'd found a stream, cleaned the blood off, and borrowed clothes from a supply cache I'd established years ago for border patrols—simple, functional, nothing that suggested desperation. My hair was pulled back. The scar on my neck was visible. I wanted it visible.

The Lycan Estate gates were fifteen feet tall, wrought iron with the Crescent Throne crest worked into the metalwork. Two guards stood at attention, both of them radiating the low-grade dominance aura of trained enforcers.

I stopped ten feet from the gate. Close enough to be heard. Far enough to make it clear I wasn't storming the perimeter.

"I'm here to see Prince Lucien," I said. My voice was steady. "I have intelligence regarding the Ironveil region that will be valuable to the Crescent Throne. I'm requesting a formal audience."

The guard on the left looked me over. His gaze caught on the scar. His expression didn't change, but I saw the flicker of recognition.

"Name?"

"Allie Davis."

The guard on the right stiffened. He'd been at the ceremony. I could see it in the way his eyes widened just slightly before he controlled his face.

"Wait here," the left guard said, and stepped through a side door built into the gate.

I waited. Kaia was quiet inside me, but I could feel her attention—focused, alert, tracking every sound and scent on the other side of that iron barrier.

The guard returned five minutes later. He didn't speak. He just opened the gate.

I walked through.

The estate grounds were immaculate. Manicured lawns, stone pathways, ancient oaks that had been standing longer than most packs had existed. The main building was more fortress than house—three stories of gray stone with narrow windows and a roofline designed for defense.

A man waited at the entrance. Tall, broad-shouldered, with the kind of stillness that came from absolute certainty of his place in the world. His aura was controlled but unmistakable. Gamma-level, maybe higher.

"Miss Davis," he said. His voice was neutral, professional. "I'm Caden Holt, Gamma of the Lycan Royal Estate. Prince Lucien will see you in the council chamber. Before we proceed, I need to clarify the terms of this meeting."

I met his eyes. "I have terms of my own."

Caden's eyebrow lifted fractionally. "Go on."

"No Alpha tone. No hierarchy performance. The conversation begins with business before it touches anything personal." I paused. "And I walk out of here under my own power, regardless of how the meeting ends."

Caden studied me for a long moment. Then he nodded once. "Understood. Follow me."

The council chamber was on the second floor. Dark wood paneling, a long table that could seat twenty, and floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the northern border. Three people were already inside.

Lucien stood at the head of the table. I recognized him from the ceremony—he'd been in the back of the hall, a diplomatic guest whose presence I'd noted in my security briefing but hadn't thought about since. He was taller than I'd realized. His aura filled the room without effort, a Lycan presence that made my wolf sit up and take notice.

A Beta stood to his right. A woman I didn't recognize sat to his left, her posture clinical, her gaze sharp.

Lucien's eyes locked onto mine the moment I entered. His wolf was right there, just beneath the surface. I could see it.

I didn't flinch.

"Miss Davis," Lucien said. His voice was low, controlled, and carried the kind of certainty that didn't need volume. "Please, sit."

I walked to the table and remained standing. "I'll stand, thank you. This won't take long."

Lucien's mouth curved slightly. Not quite a smile. "As you prefer."

I pulled a folded piece of paper from my pocket—a hand-drawn map I'd sketched from memory over the last three days—and laid it flat on the table.

"This is the Ironveil alliance network," I said. "Every treaty, every pressure point, every Alpha who owes favors and every Alpha who's holding grudges. I brokered most of these personally over the last ten years. Tristan Evans took credit, but the relationships are mine. Without me, those alliances are already starting to fracture."

I traced a line along the eastern border. "The Ridgeback Pack here has a new Alpha who's been looking for an excuse to renegotiate terms. The treaty I brokered with them three years ago hinges on a personal relationship with their Luna—who will not take calls from Vienna Collins."

I moved to the western edge. "The Shadowpine Pack's border runs parallel to Ironveil's hunting grounds. I designed the patrol schedule that keeps incidents to zero. Tristan doesn't know the schedule. His Gamma does, but the Gamma's loyalty is

questionable now."

I straightened and looked directly at Lucien. "I'm offering you this intelligence. In exchange, I have conditions."

Lucien leaned back slightly, his gaze never leaving mine. "Name them."

"Equal authority within the Lycan structure. A permanent seat at the Lycan Council. Sovereign command over the estate's border defense." I paused. "And my name on all legal instruments before any bonding ritual."

The Beta inhaled sharply. The woman's expression didn't change, but her eyes narrowed with interest.

Lucien was silent for three long seconds.

Then he said, "Agreed."

I blinked. "Just like that?"

"Just like that." He stood, closing the distance between us in two measured steps. "You're my fated mate, Allie. My wolf knew it the moment your scent changed. But you're also the most strategically valuable person in this room, and I'm not fool enough to waste that by treating you as anything less than an equal."

He extended his hand. "Do we have an accord?"

I looked at his hand. At the certainty in his eyes. At the map on the table between us.

Then I reached out and shook it.

"We do."
