Chapter 5

David moved.

Not toward Castiel. Toward me. His hand shot out, fingers closing around my upper arm with the kind of grip that said property, not person. He hauled me upright before the Deltas could react, his Alpha tone flooding the mate bond between us like ice water down my spine.

"This is my pack house," he said, his voice pitched to carry across the entire hall. "My resource audit. My Omega."

The Alpha tone hit the room. I felt every wolf in the assembly flinch under the weight of it—shoulders tightening, necks baring involuntarily, the instinctive submission that an Alpha's command could pull from wolves who didn't have the strength to resist.

Castiel didn't flinch.

He turned his full attention to David, and the air between them changed. Not loudly. Not with any visible display. But I felt it the way you feel a storm front moving in—pressure dropping, temperature shifting, the certainty that something enormous was about to arrive.

Castiel's aura rose.

It didn't announce itself. It simply filled the space, quiet and absolute, the kind of presence that didn't need to push because it was already everywhere. Where David's Alpha tone was practiced performance—rehearsed inflection, strategic volume—Castiel's was structural weight. Foundational. The difference between a man shouting that he's in charge and a man who doesn't need to say it because the room already knows.

David's grip on my arm loosened.

Just slightly. Just enough that I felt his fingers hesitate.

The Deltas released me completely. My knees buckled, and I fell forward onto the stone floor, catching myself on my ruined hands. The silver burns screamed. I bit down on the sound before it could escape.

Castiel stepped forward. Once. Not toward David. Toward me.

David's aura wavered.

I felt it through the cracked mate bond—a flicker of uncertainty, the first real doubt I'd ever sensed from him, threading through the arrogance like a hairline fracture in glass. His wolf pulled back. Not retreating. Not yet. But no longer pressing forward.

For the first time in six years, David Simmons felt his Alpha authority meet something it could not push through.

The far doors opened.

Not the side entrance Castiel had used. The great ceremonial doors at the hall's end, the ones reserved for Council inspections and formal pack gatherings. They swung inward with the slow, deliberate weight of something that did not need to hurry.

Lycan King Kingsley Ramos walked in.

His aura arrived before he did. It pressed into the room like a physical force, and every wolf in the assembly went still. Not the forced stillness of an Alpha tone—this was deeper than that. Instinctive. The kind of submission that lived in blood and bone, that didn't require thought because it was older than thought.

Marcus Thorne walked half a step behind him, the Captain of the Royal Guard, his hand resting on a blade I couldn't see but knew was there. Four more guards flanked them, moving in perfect silence.

David pivoted. His posture shifted instantly—shoulders back, chin lifted, the deferential bow Judith had coached into him in adolescence. He held it, waiting for acknowledgment, his expression carefully arranged into respectful welcome.

Kingsley didn't look at him.

He walked past the assembled wolves with the unhurried authority of a man who had never needed to signal his arrival. Past Judith's rigid smile. Past Gracie's carefully arranged Luna posture, her hands still gloved in silver. Past David's held bow without a single glance.

He walked directly toward the center of the room.

Toward me.

I was still on my knees, my hands pressed against the stone floor, blood dripping from my wrists onto the trampled scrolls scattered around me. My breath came in shallow pulls. The dormant thing in my chest—my wolf, still not fully awake but no longer silent—stirred against my ribs like something testing the walls of a cage.

Kingsley stopped above me.

He looked down. His gaze moved over the silver burns smoking faintly on my crushed hands, over the blood-inked scrolls David had trampled, over my face turned upward with an expression I couldn't control anymore. Not pleading. Not defiant. Just exhausted. Just enduring.

He was still for three heartbeats.

Then he inhaled.

Once. Slowly. With the deliberate attention of someone reading a document in a language they once knew and have not forgotten.

The bloodline scent hit him.

I saw it happen. Saw the exact moment recognition ignited behind his eyes—not surprise, not confusion, but something older and more certain. Something that had been waiting.

His pupils contracted to pinpoints. Then expanded. His eyes flashed solid gold—not the flicker of a surprised wolf, but a full, sustained, royal blaze that lit the hall like a second sun.

The stone beneath my knees trembled.

Marcus Thorne's hand moved to his weapon. The royal guards shifted into formation without a word. Every wolf in the assembly felt it—the aura of a Lycan King whose bloodline recognition had just detonated in the center of a room that had no idea what it was standing in.

Kingsley's mouth opened.

He whispered one word.

"Daughter."
