Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I knew the exact moment because I was staring at the pack hall clock when Corbin spoke the words. I'd just come back from patrol—eight hours in the rain tracking a rogue scent that turned out to be nothing—and walked into what looked like a wedding.

Candles. White garlands. The ceremonial altar draped in silver cloth.

I stopped in the doorway, dripping mud onto the stone floor, and felt the bond hum wrong beneath my ribs. Not the steady pull I'd carried for years. Something jagged. Urgent.

The hall was packed. Every wolf in Thornridge stood in rows facing the altar, silent, their heads turned toward the front. I pushed through them, my boots squeaking, and someone's hand caught my elbow.

"Madalyn, don't—"

I yanked free and kept moving.

Then I saw him.

Corbin stood at the altar in full Alpha regalia—the black ceremonial coat, the silver pack crest across his chest. His jaw was set. His eyes were fixed on the wall above the crowd, deliberately not looking at the door. Not looking at me.

Beside him, in a white dress that clung to her visibly pregnant belly, stood Lilith Butler.

The bond went ice-cold.

I opened my mouth to call his name, but my mother's voice cut through the hall first.

"Thornridge Pack." Margo stood to the left of the altar, her posture regal, her hands folded. She looked like a queen presiding over a coronation. "Bear witness."

I shoved forward. "Corbin—"

Margo's eyes snapped to me. The wolves between us closed ranks without a word, a wall of shoulders and crossed arms. I slammed into them and stopped.

"Corbin!" My voice cracked.

He turned.

For one second—one breath—his eyes met mine. I saw something flicker there. Guilt, maybe. Or just the faint ghost of what we used to be.

Then his face went blank.

He spoke in the Alpha tone. The one that makes your knees want to buckle. The one I'd never heard him use on me.

"I, Corbin Sanders, Alpha of Thornridge, reject you, Madalyn Ortiz, as my mate and Luna."

The bond tore.

It didn't snap clean. It ripped—slow, serrated, like a blade dragged through living tissue. The half-formed mark on my neck went dead-white. Ice spread outward from the scar, through my chest, down my arms, into my lungs. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't stand.

I hit the floor.

Somewhere inside me, my wolf—silent for so long I'd stopped listening for her—slammed against the cage she'd been locked in. She roared. She clawed. She had no form to pour herself into, no way out, but she was there, and she was furious.

I screamed.

Not a word. Not a plea. Just sound—raw, biological, the noise a wolf makes when its bond is killed.

The hall went silent.

I looked up through the blur of tears and saw Corbin turn to Lilith. He cupped her face in both hands, tilted her head to the side, and sank his teeth into her neck.

The new Luna mark bloomed gold.

The pack watched.

My mother didn't flinch.

I don't know how long I knelt there. Seconds. Maybe a minute. The bond-dark spread through me like cold water filling a room, and I felt it—felt the space where Corbin used to be go empty, go silent, go dead.

Then I stood up.

My legs shook. My hands were numb. But I stood.

I walked to the altar—no one stopped me this time—and picked up the ceremonial antler crown. Lilith's crown. The one they'd already placed there, ready for her.

I looked at Corbin. He wouldn't meet my eyes.

I looked at my mother. She met mine without blinking.

Then I smashed the crown against the stone floor.

The crack echoed off every wall. Shards of bone and silver wire skittered across the stones. Someone gasped.

I turned to Margo.

"You did this." My voice came out raw but clear. "You planned this. You dressed the altar. You called the pack. You gave him my mate."

She opened her mouth.

"Don't." I took a step closer. The wolves between us melted back. "Don't tell me this was for the pack. Don't tell me this was for Dad. You didn't honor him. You sold me."

Margo's face went white.

I looked around the hall—at the wolves who'd watched me run patrols, who'd eaten meals I cooked, who'd let me bandage their wounds after rogue fights. Not one of them met my eyes.

"If this is what you call honor," I said quietly, "you can have it."

I walked to the mantle and grabbed the leather cord—Dad's cord, the one Margo kept polished like a shrine—and shoved it into my pocket.

Then I walked out.

No one followed me until I reached the tree line.

"Madalyn!" Patrick Carr's voice, breathless and urgent. I turned.

The old Beta stumbled to a stop three feet from the border, his face drawn. He looked like he'd aged ten years in the last ten minutes.

"Don't go back," I said flatly.

"I'm not here to bring you back." He pulled a folded paper from his jacket and pressed it into my hand. "I'm here to make sure you leave knowing the truth."

I stared at him.

"Your mother's been poisoning you," Patrick said. His voice shook. "Wolfsbane. Micro-doses in your food since you were thirteen. That's why your wolf never came. That's why they called you Omega."

The world tilted.

"And Corbin—" Patrick's jaw clenched. "Three years ago, Silvercrest sent you a training invitation. Full scholarship. You would've gone. You would've awakened. He intercepted it. Destroyed it."

I couldn't speak.

Patrick pointed at the paper in my hand. "Silvercrest coordinates. Your father would've wanted you to run toward something."

He stepped back. He was still Thornridge's Beta. He couldn't cross.

I looked at him once—this man who'd loved my father, who'd tracked my mother's crimes for years and said nothing until now.

Then I turned and walked across the border into no-man's-land.

Behind me, the phantom of the dead bond ached like a missing limb.

I didn't look back.
