Chapter 2

The Silvercrest checkpoint was a concrete box with fluorescent lights that made everything look like a hospital. I parked under the floodlights and got out slowly. My dress was stuck to my back with blood. It peeled away from the seats when I moved.

Two guards stepped out of the booth. They were both Deltas. I could tell by the way they held themselves — confident but not commanding. One of them looked at my dress. The other looked at my face.

"I need to see the Lycan Prince," I said.

The first guard's hand moved toward his radio. "Ma'am, you need medical—"

"I need to see Rhys O'Brien." I opened the trunk and pulled out the file box. Three years of notes. Handwritten maps. Rogue movement patterns catalogued by sector and season. I set it on the hood of my car. "I have intelligence on coordinated rogue activity along your eastern border. I also have a proposal."

The second guard looked at the box. Then at me. "What kind of proposal?"

"The kind he'll want to hear in person."

They made me wait in the booth while they radioed up. I sat in a metal chair that was bolted to the floor. My back was screaming. I pressed two fingers to the base of my neck where the mark used to be. The skin there was smooth now. Empty. Like I had never been bonded at all.

Fifteen minutes passed.

Then the door opened and he walked in.

I had seen Rhys O'Brien twice before — once at a Pack Summit three years ago, once at a border negotiation Jaxon had dragged me to last spring. Both times I had been careful not to look too long. Lycan Princes notice when you look.

He was taller than I remembered. His hair was dark, pulled back, and his eyes were the kind of gray that looks silver under certain light. He wore a black shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows. No ceremony. No performance.

He stopped in the doorway.

For three full seconds he did not move. He just stood there, absolutely still, looking at me like I was something he had lost and found in the wrong place.

Then his wolf growled.

I heard it. Low. Visceral. A sound that came from somewhere deep in his chest and rattled the air between us.

His jaw tightened. He did not say anything about it.

"You're bleeding," he said.

His voice was quieter than I expected. Controlled.

"I know," I said. "I need five minutes. Then you can call a healer."

He looked at the file box on the table between us. Then back at me.

"Talk," he said.

I opened the box. I pulled out the top file and spread the maps across the table. Red marks for confirmed sightings. Blue for suspected routes. Black for attacks.

"Rogue activity along your eastern border has increased forty percent in the last six months," I said. "They're not random. They're coordinated. Someone is organizing them."

Rhys leaned over the table. His eyes moved across the maps. Fast. Precise.

"You catalogued this yourself," he said.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Ironvale shares that border. And because no one else was paying attention."

He picked up one of the maps. He studied it for a long moment. Then he set it down and looked at me.

"What's the proposal?"

I met his eyes. I did not look away.

"A mate-bond alliance," I said. "Strategic. Contracted. You get the intelligence. You get political grounds to move against Ironvale under mate-bond law if you choose to. You get public leverage at the next Summit. I get protection. Healing. And a title."

Something shifted in his expression. Not surprise. Something else.

"You were bonded to Jaxon Ellis," he said.

"I was."

"Past tense."

"He rejected me tonight. In front of the entire pack."

Rhys's hands flattened on the table. His knuckles went white.

"And you came here," he said slowly, "bleeding through your dress, with three years of intelligence files, to propose a contract."

"Yes."

"Not to ask for sanctuary. Not to beg. To negotiate."

"I don't beg," I said.

His mouth curved. Just barely. It was not quite a smile.

"No," he said. "You don't."

He straightened. He looked at me for a long time. I felt his wolf under his skin — restless, prowling, wanting something I could not name.

"Agreed," he said.

I blinked. "You haven't heard the terms."

"I don't need to."

"You should—"

"Aspen." My name in his mouth stopped me cold. "I agree. We'll draft the contract tonight. My Beta will witness it. You'll have quarters in the pack house and access to the best healer in the territory. Anything you need."

I stared at him.

"Why?" I said.

He leaned down. His hands were still flat on the table. His face was very close to mine.

"Because you walked out of a pack that destroyed you," he said quietly, "and the first thing you did was come here and offer me something valuable. Not your pain. Not your story. Your strength."

He straightened.

"And because I've been waiting three years for you to be free."

The air went out of the room.

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.

Rhys turned to the door and spoke to someone outside. "Get Callum. And Elias. Now."

Then he looked back at me.

"Can you walk?"

"Yes," I said.

He held out his hand.

I looked at it for a long moment. Then I stood up on my own.

He smiled. A real one this time.

"Good," he said.

---

The war room was all dark wood and maps pinned to the walls. Callum was already there when we arrived — a broad-shouldered man with sharp eyes and a Beta's instinct for reading a room. He looked at me. Then at Rhys. Then at the blood on my dress.

His jaw tightened.

"This is Aspen Wells," Rhys said. "She's proposed a strategic mate-bond alliance. We're drafting the contract tonight."

Callum's eyes narrowed. "A contract."

"Yes."

"She's wolfless," Callum said flatly. "Scarred. From a minor pack. And you're binding yourself to her by contract instead of bond."

"Yes," Rhys said again.

Callum looked at me. I looked back. I did not flinch.

"With respect, Prince," Callum said slowly, "she could be a liability."

Rhys set the file box on the table between them. He opened it. He pulled out the maps, the notes, the three years of my handwriting cataloguing every threat that had crossed near Silvercrest's borders.

"Read the files," Rhys said quietly. "Then tell me she's a liability."

Callum looked down at the table. His hand moved over the top map. His expression shifted.

Rhys pulled a contract template from a drawer. He set it in front of me.

"Standard terms," he said. "Protection. Resources. Healing. Public recognition as my mate. You'll have autonomy within the pack. No one touches you without your permission. That includes me."

I looked at the document. My hands were shaking. I pressed them flat on the table so no one would see.

"And in exchange?" I said.

"Your intelligence. Your presence at Summits. Your name beside mine."

He slid a pen across the table.

I picked it up.

My hand brushed his over the paper. Just for a second. His skin was warm. I did not pull away. But I did not lean in either.

I signed my name.

Rhys signed his.

Callum witnessed it with his jaw still tight.

When it was done, Rhys folded the contract and locked it in a drawer. Then he looked at me.

"Elias is waiting," he said. "He'll treat your wounds."

I nodded.

He walked me to the door. His hand hovered near my elbow but did not touch.

Before I stepped out, I looked back at him.

"Why did you really agree?" I said.

He looked at me for a long time.

"Because the Moon Goddess gave you to me three years ago," he said quietly. "And I've been waiting ever since."

Then he closed the door.

I stood in the hallway with my back screaming and my hands shaking and something warm and terrifying blooming in my chest.

Behind me, through the door, I heard Callum's voice.

"You scented her."

"Yes," Rhys said.

"She's your mate. Your real mate."

"Yes."

A pause.

"Does she know?"

"No," Rhys said. "And you won't tell her. She came here for a contract. That's what she'll get. The rest is hers to choose."

I pressed two fingers to the base of my neck.

The mark was gone.

But something else was beginning.
