Chapter 2

The command hit me like a physical blow to the chest. Lorenzo’s voice wasn’t just loud; it was laced with the ancient, crushing weight of Alpha authority. It vibrated in my bones, demanding obedience from every cell in my body.

"Kneel!"

My knees buckled before my brain could process the order. I hit the hardwood floor hard, the impact jarring my spine. I gasped, trying to scramble back up, to fight the invisible hands pressing me down, but the air in the room had turned heavy, suffocating. It felt like gravity had increased tenfold.

"Lorenzo, stop," I wheezed, my hands clawing at the polished wood. "You’re hurting me... hurting us..."

He didn't listen. He stood over me, his eyes glowing with a feral, amber light that I used to find comforting. Now, it was the gaze of a stranger. Kehlani watched from the corner, a cruel little smile playing on her lips as she toyed with a lock of her hair.

"I gave you a choice, Sabrina," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, vibrating growl. "You chose defiance. You chose to cling to a title you no longer deserve."

"I built this pack!" I screamed, or tried to. It came out as a strangled cry. My wolf, Sasha, was whining in agony, curled into a ball in the back of my mind. She was strong, but against a direct Alpha command from her own mate, she was paralyzed.

A sharp, tearing pain ripped through my lower abdomen. It was sudden and absolute, like a hot knife twisting inside me. I doubled over, clutching my stomach, sweat instantly beading on my forehead.

"Please," I begged, my vision blurring. "Something is wrong. Lorenzo, please..."

He looked down at me with cold indifference. "I, Lorenzo Brooks, Alpha of the Shadow Moon Pack, reject you, Sabrina Barnes."

The bond snapped. It wasn't a clean break; it was a violent tearing of the soul. I screamed then, a raw, guttural sound that scraped my throat raw. The pain in my stomach intensified, eclipsing the heartbreak. It felt like my insides were dissolving.

"I reject you as my Luna," he continued, his voice relentless. "I reject you as my mate."

Darkness rushed in from the edges of my vision. I felt warmth spreading between my legs, soaking through my dress. The scent of blood—my blood—filled the air, sharp and metallic. The last thing I saw before the world went black was Kehlani wrinkling her nose in disgust.

The beeping of a monitor was the first thing to pierce the fog. I woke up to the sterile smell of antiseptic and the harsh fluorescent lights of the pack infirmary. My body felt hollow. Ached in a way that went deeper than muscle or bone.

Dr. Evans was standing by the bed, his face pale and drawn. He wouldn't meet my eyes.

"Sabrina," he said softly. Not 'Luna.' Just Sabrina.

"My baby," I whispered, my hand moving instinctively to my stomach. It felt flat. Empty. The spark of life I had sensed just hours ago was gone.

Dr. Evans closed his eyes for a moment. "I'm so sorry. The trauma... the Alpha command combined with the rejection... your body couldn't handle the shock. You miscarried."

A wail built in my chest, but I didn't have the breath to let it out. I just stared at the ceiling, tears leaking silently from the corners of my eyes. I had lost my mate. I had lost my title. And now, I had lost the only innocent thing left in this wretched world.

The door opened. I expected comfort. I expected an apology. Instead, Lorenzo walked in. He looked fresh, showered, wearing a crisp new suit. He glanced at the monitor, then at me, with zero emotion.

"It’s done then?" he asked the doctor.

"Alpha," Dr. Evans stammered. "She needs rest. The physical toll—"

"She is weak," Lorenzo interrupted, his eyes boring into mine. "A strong Luna would have withstood a simple command. A strong wolf would have protected her pup. This just proves you were never fit to carry my heir, Sabrina."

The cruelty of his words stole the air from the room. He wasn't just rejecting me; he was erasing me. He was rewriting our history to make my pain my own fault.

"Get out," I whispered.

"This is my infirmary," he sneered. "And you are taking up a bed meant for pack members. You have one hour to clear out your belongings from the Alpha suite. You’ve been reassigned to the Omega quarters."

He turned on his heel and left. He didn't look back.

The walk to the basement was the longest journey of my life. I was still bleeding, physically and emotionally, but I refused to let them drag me. I packed a single duffel bag. My clothes, my jewelry, the heirlooms from my mother—Lorenzo’s guards confiscated them at the door. "Pack property," they sneered.

I was left with two oversized t-shirts and a pair of worn leggings.

The Omega quarters were damp and smelled of mildew. It was a stark contrast to the sun-drenched balcony of the Luna suite. The room was a concrete box with a cot in the corner and a single, flickering bulb.

As I walked down the hallway, I passed wolves I had helped. Wolves whose children I had babysat. Wolves whose medical bills I had paid from my own savings. They looked away. Some scowled, mimicking their Alpha’s disdain. Fear was a potent drug, and Lorenzo had dosed them all.

I sat on the thin, lumpy mattress, pulling my knees to my chest. The concrete walls seemed to close in on me. Above me, through the floorboards, I could hear the muffled thumping of bass. Music.

They were having a party.

Laughter drifted down through the vents. I heard the clinking of glasses and the murmur of a toast. Lorenzo’s voice, booming and cheerful, announced something about a "new era" and a "true future."

I wrapped my arms around my empty stomach and rocked back and forth, the cold of the basement seeping into my bones. Sasha was silent, dormant in her grief. I was completely alone. But as the tears finally dried on my cheeks, a cold, hard knot formed in the center of my chest.

He thought I was weak. He thought he had broken me.

I listened to them celebrate my destruction, and for the first time in ten years, I didn't feel love for Lorenzo Brooks. I felt the first, flickering spark of something else entirely.

Hatred.
