Chapter 1

The bond snapped at 8:47 on the night of our seventh anniversary, and I felt it before I understood the words.

I was standing in the middle of the Ironveil banquet hall, the Luna pendant warm against my collarbone, when Hudson walked past me without a glance. His shoulder brushed mine. That was when I caught it — a sweet, cloying floral scent layered over his skin like a second shirt. Not mine. Not moonflower. Something sugary and unfamiliar that made my stomach turn.

I stopped mid-step. My hand went to my throat.

The Beta, Marcus, met my eyes across the room. He gave me a smile that wasn't a smile — a tight, pitying twitch of the mouth — and then he looked away. Fast. Like I was already gone.

I turned toward the podium. Hudson was standing there in his black suit, the one I picked out for our sixth anniversary. He didn't look at me. He raised his hand, and Jolie Ortiz stepped up beside him.

She was in white silk. Her belly was round under the fabric, one small hand resting on it like a crown. She looked at me over Hudson's shoulder and smiled.

"I, Hudson, Alpha of Ironveil," his voice rang through the hall, cold and formal, "reject you, Scarlett, as my mate and Luna."

The mark on my neck went cold.

Not cool. Cold. Like someone had pressed an ice cube to my skin and left it there. Then colder — like a door closing in an empty room, sealing off something that used to be lit. My chest cracked open from the inside. Air left me. My knees hit the marble before I knew I was falling.

Inside me, my wolf — quiet, patient Nova, who had been with me since I was thirteen — flickered once and went out. Snuffed. Like a candle under a thumb.

I couldn't breathe. My hands scraped against the polished stone. Somewhere far away I heard glasses clinking, a chair scraping. No one moved toward me.

Hudson did not look down.

Jolie smiled wider.

I don't know how long I knelt there. Long enough for the silence to become a physical thing pressing on my back. Long enough for the scent of her — that sweet, sugary rot — to fill the whole hall.

Then Jolie moved.

She took two dainty steps toward the banquet stairs, gasped theatrically, and crumpled. Her cry split the hall. "My baby — she pushed me — Scarlett pushed me!"

I hadn't touched her. I hadn't even risen.

Hudson turned on me.

His eyes were black with fury, and then he opened his mouth and used it — the Alpha tone — on me. On me. Seven years and he had never once turned it on his own mate.

"Kneel," he snarled. "Kneel and apologize to Jolie. Now."

The compulsion hit me like a truck. My spine bowed. My already-broken wolf let out a raw, wounded sound inside my head — and then something in that sound sharpened. A snarl. Small. Furious. Alive.

I knelt lower. I forced the words through my teeth.

"I'm sorry."

My voice was a stranger's. Jolie sobbed prettily into Hudson's chest. He stroked her hair. The pack watched. Not one of them — not one — stepped forward.

I memorized their faces.

---

They moved my things the next morning.

Vera Ward supervised it herself, standing in the doorway of the Luna suite with a clipboard, her mouth a thin painted line. "The dresses go to storage. The jewelry stays — it belongs to the Luna position, not to you. Jolie will need the closet redone. Something brighter."

Omegas I had trained carried my things down the hall to a small room in the servant wing. One of them wouldn't look at me. The other muttered "sorry, Luna" and Vera cut her off with a look.

"She is not Luna. Do not call her that."

Jolie arrived at noon. She walked through the suite trailing her fingers along my vanity, my bedposts, the silver hairbrush Hudson gave me on our second anniversary. She stopped at the pendant tray. She lifted my old Luna chain — a lesser one I wore for meetings — and draped it around her own neck.

"It suits me," she said to Vera, loud enough for me to hear from the hall. "Don't you think?"

I didn't cry. I hadn't cried since I hit the marble.

That night I sat on the narrow Omega cot with my hand pressed flat against the scar on my abdomen — the ragged silver-blade scar that had cost me a womb and, apparently, a mate. Through the thin wall I heard two Deltas passing in the corridor.

"—barren and broken, never was fit to be Luna anyway—"

"—Jolie's already carrying the heir, that's what a real Luna does—"

Something inside me went very quiet. Very clear. Like cold water settling.

I got up. I found a pen and the back of a laundry inventory sheet. And I began to write.

Every pack accord I had negotiated in seven years. Every treaty. Every alliance clause. Every trade agreement with the border packs. I knew them all — I had signed most of them myself. I wrote down the ones with a mate-clause. The ones that voided on Luna dismissal. The ones tied to my personal bloodline signature.

By the time the sun came up my list filled three pages.

Down the hall, Jolie's laugh rang through what used to be my door.

I folded the pages once, slid them into the waistband of my dress, and went to find Marcus.

He was going to look at me this time.
