Chapter 4

The gathering was called for seven in the evening.

I knew something was coming because Michaela had spent the afternoon arranging chairs in the great hall with a precision that had nothing to do with seating and everything to do with theater. She positioned the Alpha table on the raised platform at the front, angled so the firelight would catch Hudson's profile just right. She had the kitchen staff bring out platters of roasted meat and honey cakes—the kind of spread usually reserved for alliance signings or Luna ceremonies.

I carried the platters in silence. No one looked at me. That was normal now.

By the time the pack assembled, the hall was full. Warriors lined the back wall. She-wolves clustered near the fire. Pups sat cross-legged on the floor in front, their faces sticky with cake crumbs. The air smelled of woodsmoke and anticipation.

Hudson stood at the center of the platform. Michaela stood beside him, her hand resting lightly on his forearm. She wore a dress the color of winter berries, cut to show the curve of her waist. Her hair was pinned back. Her smile was soft and radiant.

I stood at the edge of the room, near the kitchen door, with a tray of empty mugs in my hands. No one noticed me. That was fine. I had spent three years learning to be invisible. Tonight, invisible was exactly where I needed to be.

Hudson lifted his hand. The room went quiet.

"Thank you all for gathering," he said. His voice carried easily, the Alpha tone warm and commanding. "Michaela has something she would like to share."

He stepped back. Just slightly. Just enough to give her the center.

Michaela's smile widened. She placed her free hand over her stomach—a gesture so deliberate, so perfectly timed, that I felt my wolf stir before Michaela even opened her mouth.

"I'm carrying Hudson's pup," she said.

The hall erupted.

Cheers. Applause. She-wolves rushing forward to embrace Michaela. Warriors clapping Hudson on the back. Someone started a chant—*Luna! Luna!*—and it spread through the room like wildfire.

Hudson did not deny it.

He placed his hand on Michaela's shoulder. The gesture was easy. Warm. Possessive in the way that made it clear to every wolf in the room that this was his woman, his pup, his future. His thumb pressed briefly against the inside of his wrist—the tell—and then his hand settled.

Michaela turned into him. She pressed her face against his chest. His arm came around her.

I watched.

I did not move. I did not blink. I held the tray of empty mugs and I watched Hudson's hand on Michaela's shoulder, the same hand that used to cup the back of my neck in the dark, and I felt something inside me crack open that was not grief.

It was fury.

My wolf surged.

Not a howl. Not a whimper. A pulse of heat that started low in my spine and spread up through my ribs, my shoulders, my throat. For the first time since the bonfire, I felt her—not the small, stunned shape curled in the dark, but something vast and silver pressing against the inside of my skin. Impatient. Awake.

*Not yet,* I told her.

The heat subsided. But it did not retreat. It sat just beneath my skin, coiled and waiting.

Across the hall, Rowan Callahan stood near the back wall with his arms crossed. His eyes found mine. He did not smile. He did not nod. He just looked at me for a long moment, and I saw the question in his face: *Are you all right?*

I looked away.

The celebration continued. Someone brought out wine. The chant shifted to a song. Michaela's hand stayed on her stomach, and Hudson's hand stayed on her shoulder, and I set the tray down on the kitchen counter and walked out the side door into the cold night air.

I did not run. I walked. Slowly. Deliberately. Down the narrow path behind the pack house, past the training ground, to the edge of the forest where the trees grew close and the moonlight barely reached.

I pulled the handset from my pocket.

Yasmin answered on the first ring.

"It's happening," I said. My voice was steady. Flat. "She announced a pregnancy. Hudson confirmed it. The pack is celebrating."

Yasmin was silent for three seconds. Then: "Do you want me there tomorrow?"

"No. Four days, like we planned. Let him settle into it. Let him think he's won."

"And the Prince?"

"I'm sending the final brief tonight."

Another pause. Then, quieter: "Are you okay?"

I looked up at the moon. It was nearly full, pale and cold against the black sky.

"My wolf woke up," I said.

Yasmin exhaled. It was not relief. It was recognition.

"Good," she said. "Then we're ready."

I closed the channel. I stood in the dark for a long moment, feeling the heat beneath my skin, the pressure building.

Then I opened a new message to Caelan.

I attached the full map of Darwin's embezzlement route—every figure, every courier, every gap I had tracked over three years. At the bottom, I wrote:

*Ironveil Pack is holding a Mate Ceremony in four days. Alpha Hudson Palmer will present evidence to a Lycan Council envoy. If you attend, you will witness the delivery of everything your Court needs. And something else besides.*

I did not tell him what the something else was.

I sent it. I put the handset back in my pocket. I turned and walked back toward the pack house.

Inside the great hall, the celebration was still going. I could hear the laughter, the music, the sound of Michaela's voice rising above it all.

I did not go back inside.

I went to my quarters. I sat on the floor with my back against the wall. I pulled out the kitchen parchment and wrote two words at the bottom of the page.

*Four days.*

My wolf pressed forward. Not howling. Not retreating.

Waiting.
