After My Mate Rejected Me, I Claimed the Throne

9.3 / 10.0
At 10:14 on a Tuesday, the mate bond shatters like bone, leaving her broken in the healer's ward. Her Alpha—Barrett, her mate of five years—orders a rogue poisoner to keep her sedated with wolfsbane, plotting to declare her an Omega and seize Silvercrest's power after her father's death and mother's coma. But the poison won't hold her forever, and a rejected Luna's vengeance will burn the throne.

After My Mate Rejected Me, I Claimed the Throne Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, and I felt it snap like a bone fracturing inside my chest.

I was standing in the Ironveil healer's ward when it happened. My father was dead. My mother was comatose. And Barrett — my mate, my Alpha, the man I had stood beside for five years — was in the next room instructing a rogue-affiliated poisoner to keep dosing me with wolfsbane permanently.

I had heard every word through the door.

"She can't be allowed to awaken," Barrett had said, his voice low and deliberate. "With her parents gone, we declare her an Omega. Unfit to hold the Luna title. Silvercrest's resources transfer cleanly."

Hale Drummond — the poisoner — had agreed in that oily, deferential tone that made my skin crawl. "The compound's been in her system since childhood. Another year of dosing and her wolf will be permanently dormant. She'll never be a threat."

I had pressed myself flat against the stone wall outside the ward, my father's death still a raw, bleeding wound in my mind, and listened to my mate plan my erasure.

My wolf — already suppressed into near-silence — had not even stirred.

Now, hours later, I lay hemorrhaging in a side room of the same ward. The trauma of my father's death had triggered a miscarriage. My body was failing in the specific silence I had learned over five years: no noise, no fuss, no inconvenience to anyone.

The door opened without a knock.

Barrett entered. Violet was on his arm.

Her hand rested on her belly — theatrical, deliberate. The engineered pregnancy pheromones she wore like perfume were faint but detectable, a chemical lie that every wolf in the room could half-sense. She looked at me with something that was not quite pity and not quite triumph. Just observation.

Barrett did not look at the blood. He looked past it.

His warriors filed in behind him. Two Deltas I recognized, both of whom had taken orders from me as Luna a week ago. Now they stood at attention behind their Alpha and would not meet my eyes.

Barrett straightened to his full height. His shoulders squared. I had seen this tell before — he always did it when he was lying, or when he needed the posture to carry the argument his words could not.

"I, Barrett Cole, Alpha of Ironveil," he said, his voice carrying the formal cadence of pack law, "reject you, Amelia Voss, as my mate and Luna."

The bond snapped.

It was not like a thread breaking. It was like a detonation inside my chest — something structural collapsing all at once, driving the air from my lungs and doubling me forward. My vision whited out at the edges. My suppressed wolf, already barely present, went utterly silent.

For the first time in five years, there was no whisper at all inside me.

I could not breathe.

Barrett's voice continued, flat and procedural. "You will be moved to the servant's quarters. Your Luna title is revoked. Violet Spence will be announced as my chosen Luna at the next pack gathering."

Violet's hand stayed on her belly. She said nothing. She watched everything.

I tried to speak. My throat would not work. My body was still hemorrhaging, still in the biological aftermath of the bond-snap, and I could feel the exact moment my knees started to give.

One of the Deltas caught my arm. Not gently. Just efficiently.

"Move her," Barrett said.

They dragged me to the servant's quarters while I was still bleeding. I did not beg. I did not speak. When they shoved me into the small, narrow room and shut the door, I held onto the doorframe until they were gone, then slid down it to the floor.

My body shook. I let it. I counted the seconds — ninety-four, total — until the shaking stopped.

Then I stood up.

I had the map folded inside my boot. I had five years of intelligence stored in my memory. I had the names Barrett and Hale Drummond had spoken in the ward — the supply routes, the dosing schedule, the rogue contact Drummond reported to.

And I had one thing Barrett did not know I possessed: I had heard him.

I pulled the map from my boot, smoothed it flat on the narrow cot, and began to write.

Every rogue patrol route I had charted along Ironveil's borders. Every supply drop I had observed and pretended not to see. Every name Drummond had mentioned. Every detail of the wolfsbane conspiracy that connected Barrett's operation to the broader rogue network threatening the Lycan Crown.

By dawn, I had a complete intelligence package.

I folded the map back into my boot, lay down on the cot with the door cracked exactly two inches, and closed my eyes.

I did not sleep.

Barrett came that evening. He did not knock. He stood in the doorway at his full height, shoulders squared again, and used his Alpha tone — the resonance of it pressing down on my chest like a physical weight.

"You will perform kitchen labor beginning at dawn," he said. "You are forbidden from contacting anyone outside Ironveil territory. Violet will be announced as my chosen Luna in three days."

I looked at him from across the room. My wolf was gone. The hollow where it had been was palpable, a silence so complete it felt like a second body.

I asked, very quietly: "Did you know she was faking it before or after you rejected me?"

His jaw tightened. His shoulders stayed square.

He did not answer.

He left.

I noted the tell. I filed it.

Then I pulled the map back out of my boot and added one final note in the margin: *Violet Spence — falsified pregnancy. Scent-masking tonic. Source: Kole Spence, wolfsbane dealer.*

I had no wolf. I had no mate bond. I had no title.

But I had this.

And Barrett Cole had no idea what he had just handed me.
