Chapter 3

The morning briefing room in the Blackthorn pack house was smaller than Ironveil's war room, but it felt more solid somehow. The table was scarred oak. The maps were hand-drawn, updated in real time with careful notations along the borders. No one rushed. No one interrupted. When someone spoke, the others listened.

I sat near the middle of the table, a stack of Ironveil patrol records in front of me. Ryland sat at the head. Callum Ren, his Beta, leaned back in his chair across from me with the easy posture of someone who had known his Alpha long enough to dispense with formality.

"The eastern perimeter," I said, tracing a section of the map with my finger. "Ironveil rotates patrols every six hours, but there's a forty-minute gap during shift change where the coverage thins. It's consistent. Maximus never addressed it."

Callum whistled low. "That's sloppy."

"It's exploitable," I corrected.

Ryland's eyes flicked to me, then back to the map. He didn't comment. He just nodded once, and one of the Gammas made a note.

We moved through the rest of the intelligence methodically. Supply routes. Healer schedules. Weaknesses in the southern border where the terrain made detection difficult. I had spent ten years managing these systems. I knew them better than Maximus ever had.

Callum asked a question about the mind-link relay structure, and I answered without thinking. Then he asked about the protocol for inter-pack communication during emergencies, and I started to explain—then stopped.

I looked at Ryland.

"That's a command decision," I said carefully. "You'd need to approve any changes to the relay structure before implementation."

Ryland set down his pen. He leaned back slightly and met my eyes.

"That's your call," he said.

I blinked.

"I'm not Luna here," I said quietly.

"You're the one with ten years of operational experience," he replied. "And you're the one who knows what works. So it's your call."

The room went still. Not tense. Just—waiting.

I looked down at the map. My hands rested flat on the table. I had deferred decisions like this for a decade. Always checking. Always confirming. Always making sure Maximus felt like the provider, the leader, the one in control.

I took a breath.

"We implement a rotating relay lead," I said. "Three-person teams on a staggered schedule to prevent single-point failure. The structure adapts if one link goes down."

Callum nodded immediately. "That's smart. I'll coordinate with the Gammas."

Ryland said nothing. But his wolf settled—I felt it through the room, a quiet, satisfied hum that made my own wolf go still inside my chest.

The briefing continued. No one made a fuss. No one commented. They just moved forward.

I sat there with my hands still flat on the table and realized I had just made a command decision in a pack that wasn't mine.

And no one had questioned it.

---

In Ironveil, Maximus sat alone in the pack house office.

The property deeds were spread across the desk in front of him. Payment records. Transfer documents. A decade of quietly routed transactions that he had never traced, never questioned, never thought to look for.

The pack house—purchased outright, not through his negotiations with the regional council. The funds: transferred from a Silvercrest family account under Anastasia's name. The operational budget that had kept Ironveil solvent through two failed harvests and a rogue skirmish that decimated the southern border: sustained entirely by her bloodline wealth, funneled in so carefully that he had never noticed.

He picked up one of the documents. His hands were shaking.

The date was from seven years ago. A payment labeled "structural repairs—pack house foundation." He remembered that year. He had stood in front of the pack and announced that they had secured emergency funding through his leadership, his connections, his ability to provide.

She had never corrected him.

He set the paper down. He picked up another. Then another. Every line a quiet, meticulous record of something she had done that he had taken credit for. Every transaction a piece of the story he had told himself about his own competence.

The door opened.

Khloe stepped inside, her expression soft and concerned. "Max? You've been in here for hours. Are you—"

"Get out," he said.

His voice was flat. Empty.

Khloe froze. "What?"

"Get out," he repeated.

She stared at him for a long moment, then turned and left without another word.

Maximus sat in the silence. He looked at the documents. He looked at the empty chair across from him where Anastasia used to sit during late-night planning sessions, her handwriting filling page after page of notes he never read.

He had never asked where the money came from. He had never asked how she managed to keep the systems running so smoothly. He had never asked because he had assumed it was his leadership that made it work.

He pressed his palms flat against the desk and tried to breathe.

---

The Silvercrest elder network moved faster than Maximus expected.

The Pack Banquet was meant to be a formal legitimization—Khloe presented before the wider pack community, alliances reaffirmed, stability projected. The hall was full. Not as full as it should have been, but full enough.

Khloe stood beside him at the dais, wearing the pendant. She smiled. She touched his arm. She looked every bit the Luna she was trying to become.

Then the doors opened.

Anastasia's mother walked in.

She didn't announce herself. She didn't wait for an invitation. She simply walked through the crowd with the slow, deliberate pace of someone who had traveled a long way for a single purpose.

The room went silent.

She stopped in front of the stage. She looked up at Maximus. She didn't use his title.

"Maximus," she said.

Her voice carried. Clear. Final.

She stepped onto the stage.

Maximus opened his mouth to speak, but she was faster. She raised her hand—not in anger, not in haste—and delivered a single open-handed slap across his face.

The sound cracked through the hall like a whip.

No one moved. No one breathed.

It wasn't rage. It was ceremony. Every elder wolf in the room recognized it: formal repudiation. A severance of bond spoken in the oldest language their kind knew.

She turned to Khloe.

Khloe's smile had vanished. She stood frozen, her hand still touching Maximus's arm.

Anastasia's mother reached forward and removed the ancestral moonstone pendant from around Khloe's neck. She did it slowly. Deliberately. Her hands steady.

She held the pendant up so the entire hall could see it.

"This belongs to my daughter," she said. "Not to you."

She turned to face the crowd.

"The Silvercrest alliance is severed," she announced. "Effective immediately."

She walked off the stage. She walked through the silent crowd. And she walked out of the hall, taking the pendant and every shred of institutional support Ironveil had left.

The doors closed behind her.

Maximus stood on the stage, his face burning where she had struck him, and looked out at the assembled pack.

No one met his eyes.
