Chapter 1

The pendant hit my palm at 9:47 on a Friday night, and I knew before I lifted the lid that something was wrong.

Caleb's hand was still on the small of my back. Three hundred wolves watched us from the floor of the Ironveil banquet hall, their glasses raised, their faces warm with firelight and borrowed pride. My mate — Alpha Caleb Burke, newly honored by the regional Alpha Council for the territory alliance I had negotiated for him — leaned in close enough that his breath touched my ear.

"Open it, Luna."

I opened it.

A moonstone, pale as a dropped tooth, sat on black velvet. No chain. Just the pendant, loose in its slot, the small gold loop at the top waiting for a thread that was not there.

My wolf, faint and quiet as she had always been, went still inside me. Not asleep. Still.

I lifted my head. I did not need to look far. Solana stood by the pillar nearest the hearth in a dress the color of wet pearl, one hand resting at the hollow of her throat the way a woman rests her hand on something she owns. The chain glinted between her fingers. Gold. Thin. Mine.

She was not looking at me. She was looking at Caleb. Her mouth was soft and open, and I knew that expression because I had worn it for seven years.

Caleb's palm pressed warm against my spine. The applause rose.

I closed the box. I set it on the linen tablecloth beside my untouched wine. I did not put the pendant on.

"Marlowe." Caleb's voice, pitched low, pitched private. "The clasp."

"Later," I said.

I pressed my thumbnail into the center of my palm and smiled for the room.

---

I followed him into the Alpha suite during the intermission. He was already loosening his collar when I shut the door.

"The chain is on Solana's neck," I said.

He turned. For a half-second he was surprised, and that half-second told me everything. Then the Alpha slid down over his face like a mask he kept hung on a hook.

"She's my aide. It was a courtesy gift."

"A matching courtesy gift."

"Marlowe."

"I know, Caleb."

I set the pendant on the table between us. The velvet box made no sound on the wood.

"The bond is finished."

He stared at me. Then he stepped forward, and the Alpha tone unfurled out of him and filled the room like weather. It hit the walls, hit my chest, hit the shelf of my ribs and tried to press down through my knees.

"Know your place."

I did not drop my eyes. I did not tilt my chin. I felt my shoulders want to and I refused them. My wolf stayed quiet, but something lower, something I had never had a name for, planted both feet on the floor of me and did not move.

"It's over," I said again.

He blinked. He had not planned for the second time.

He recovered. He waved a hand. "You'll feel differently in the morning."

"I won't."

"Marlowe. Go back to the hall. Smile. We'll talk when you're calm."

I picked up the velvet box.

---

I walked back through the banquet with the pendant in my hand. People touched my elbow as I passed. Someone said my name warmly. A pack child, no higher than my hip, held up a drawing of a wolf with crooked ears, and I crouched and told her it was beautiful, because my mouth could still do that.

Solana was at the pillar.

I stopped in front of her.

I did not speak. I looked at the chain. Her chin lifted, slow and deliberate, and I saw her decide to meet my eyes the way a child decides to touch a hot stove.

I pressed my thumbnail hard into my palm until something in the small bones of my hand creaked.

Then I set the velvet box down on the empty chair beside her.

I turned and walked out of the banquet.

---

The suite was dark when I came back to it. Caleb was still downstairs performing devotion. I did not turn on the lamp.

I knelt at the Alpha desk and pulled the iron-bound ledger from the bottom drawer. Seven years of my handwriting. Seven years of transactions he had asked me to log and never asked me to read.

I already had the duplicates. I had been making them for months without letting myself ask why.

Raid logs. Tribute diversions. A wolfsbane supplier whose name appeared in no healer's registry. A debt column that climbed down the page like a wound.

I packed the second set into the battered leather satchel I used for border inspections. I pried up the loose board in the closet Caleb never opened — the one that held his winter coats he had not worn since the lean years — and I slid the satchel beneath it, and I set the board down flush.

Then I sat on the floor in the dark with my thumbnail buried in my palm until my hands stopped shaking.

My wolf did not stir.

Something else, lower and older, breathed once in the hollow under my ribs and did not go back to sleep.

---

He came to me in the morning composed, the way he was composed after he had slept well.

"I've spoken to the elders." He pulled his cuffs straight. "We'll hold a Mate Ceremony renewal within the week. Before the pack. A reaffirmation."

He said it like a gift.

He added, softer, almost warm: "Put the jealousy down, Marlowe. Remember what we built."

I watched his mouth move.

"Will Solana be attending?" I asked.

His jaw locked.

He did not answer.

He left.

I took a sheet of pack letterhead from the drawer, uncapped the pen, and wrote across the top in my steadiest hand:

*To His Highness Atticus Shaw, Continental Lycan Court —*
