After My Mate Rejected Me for a Rogue She-Wolf Novel Cover

After My Mate Rejected Me for a Rogue She-Wolf

At exactly 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, my entire future shattered. Dressed in white silk before three hundred pack members, I bared my neck for Colson Pierce's mark. Instead of claiming me, the Alpha of Silverfang froze as his eyes went distant. Dropping his hand, he left the bond-site on my throat icy and hollow. In that single instant, my fated mate abandoned me, leaving a freezing void where our warmth belonged.

Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning, three minutes into the Mate Ceremony.

I stood at the ritual altar in white silk, neck bared to three hundred wolves. Colson's fingers rested against my throat—warm, steady, exactly where the mark should go. He'd just begun the formal words. "I, Colson Pierce, Alpha of Silverfang, take you—"

Then his eyes went distant. His hand dropped.

The bond-site on my neck turned cold. Not burning. Voiding. Like someone had opened a window in my chest and let winter in.

Colson's jaw tightened. He murmured something to Dax, his Beta, who stood three feet to our left. Dax's expression flickered—confusion, then something harder. Colson stepped back from the altar. His gaze swept past me without landing.

"Security matter," he said. His voice carried to the first few rows but not the back. "Eastern border. I'll return shortly."

He walked away. Mid-ritual. In front of both our families. In front of the entire pack.

The ceremonial clearing fell silent. Not the reverent kind. The kind that happens when something breaks in public and no one knows where to look.

I stayed upright. My legs wanted to fold, but I locked my knees and kept my chin level. The cold spot on my neck throbbed with each heartbeat. Beneath my skin, something slammed against a wall—once, twice, furious and muffled. Seraphine. My wolf. Caged under six years of wolfsbane tea, she'd been quiet for months. Now she was trying to claw her way out.

I couldn't let her. Not here. Not like this.

Dax shifted beside me. He opened his mouth, closed it. His discomfort was visible—shoulders tight, eyes darting toward the tree line where Colson had disappeared. But he said nothing.

I turned to face the crowd. Three hundred wolves. Some stared. Some looked away. A few of the Omegas I'd helped over the years met my eyes with something like pity, which was worse than the staring.

"The ceremony will resume when the Alpha returns," I said. My voice came out steady. I didn't know how. "Please enjoy the refreshments. The kitchen staff prepared them this morning."

I smiled. It felt like pulling stitches.

The crowd didn't move at first. Then Colson's mother, Maren, stood from the front row and gestured toward the long tables set up near the pack house. People began to drift that way, murmuring in low voices. Maren's gaze landed on me—sharp, assessing—but she didn't approach.

I stayed at the altar until the clearing emptied. Then I walked back to the pack house alone, the white silk train dragging through the grass behind me.

---

Colson didn't return that night.

I sat in our bedroom—*his* bedroom, technically, though I'd lived in it for six years—still wearing the ceremony whites because taking them off felt like admitting something I wasn't ready to name. The cold spot on my neck had settled into a dull ache. I pressed my fingers against it. The skin was smooth. Unmarked.

Seraphine was quiet again. The wolfsbane I'd brewed that afternoon had done its job.

I stared at the tea tin on the nightstand. I hadn't opened it in three days before today. I'd thought—stupid, desperate thought—that maybe if I let the wolfsbane fade, if I let my wolf surface even a little, Colson would finally see me. The real me. Not the soft, pastel version I'd spent six years building.

But he'd walked away anyway.

I picked up the tin. My hands were steady. I brewed another cup, drank it in four swallows, and felt Seraphine's presence sink back into silence.

---

The next morning, I learned where Colson had gone.

Holland's safe house. Eastern edge of pack territory. A rogue attack, they said. She'd sent a distress mind-link during the ceremony.

I gathered supplies—medicine, blankets, food. Acting-Luna protocol. If there was an attack, the pack needed to see their leadership respond. Even if that leadership had left me standing unmarked in front of three hundred wolves.

I drove to the safe house alone. The building was small, tucked into the trees, with Silverfang patrol marks on the perimeter. No sign of rogue damage. No blood. No broken windows.

Holland answered the door. She looked perfect. Hair loose, sweater soft, eyes wide with practiced gratitude.

"Freya," she said. "You didn't have to come all this way."

"I brought supplies," I said. I held out the bag.

She took it, set it inside, then stepped closer. Close enough that I could smell her perfume—something floral and cloying that didn't match her natural scent. Close enough that when she leaned in, her breath brushed my ear.

"He'll never mark a wolfless girl," she whispered.

I went still. My wolf slammed against the wolfsbane cage again—harder this time, desperate.

Before I could respond, footsteps crunched on gravel behind me. I turned.

Colson stood ten feet away, flanked by Dax and Renn, his Gamma. He looked at me the way you'd look at a problem you hadn't solved yet. Not like a mate. Not even like a partner.

Holland stepped back, her expression shifting into something soft and wounded.

Colson's jaw tightened. He didn't move closer. He just stood there, framed by his two most trusted wolves, and spoke.

"I, Colson Pierce, Alpha of Silverfang, reject you, Freya Silva, as my mate."

The bond didn't burn. It voided. The cold spot on my neck turned to ice, then to nothing—a thermal signature of something dying in real time. My legs buckled. I hit the gravel hard, palms scraping stone.

Dax flinched. Renn's face went carefully blank. Colson didn't reach for me.

Holland's practiced sympathy didn't reach her eyes.

And Seraphine—my wolf, my caged, furious wolf—screamed a name I'd never heard before, faint and raw beneath the wolfsbane's grip.

*Seraphine.*
