Chapter 2

I arrived at Freya's door at four-thirty in the morning. The bus had dropped me at Port Authority at three, and I'd walked the rest. My phone was off. The one bag I'd packed sat at my feet.

She opened before I knocked.

She was dressed—jeans, sweater, hair pulled back—like she'd been waiting. Maybe she had. She looked at my face for two seconds, then stepped aside.

"Guest room's the second door on the left," she said. "Key's on the dresser."

I walked down the hall. The room was small. Clean sheets. A lamp. A window that looked out onto a fire escape and a slice of pre-dawn sky. On the dresser: a brass key on a plain ring, and a mug of coffee, still steaming.

I picked up the mug. Black, one spoon of honey. Exactly how I take it. I had never told her that.

I walked back to the kitchen. Freya was pouring herself a cup from the same pot.

"You've known for months," I said.

She didn't look up. "I built the room. I wasn't going to say anything until you were ready to use it."

I sat down at the table. The coffee was perfect. I drank half of it in silence, and Freya sat across from me and drank hers, and neither of us said anything about the man who had left me on seven highway shoulders or the mark on my neck that had gone cold as river stone.

For the first time in five years, I woke up in a space where no one's absence was louder than their presence.

Two days later, Freya walked me to the Silvercrest pack house for the residency meeting.

Alpha Marcus Webb's office was on the third floor, all dark wood and tall windows. He was older than Jaxon, maybe fifty, with gray at his temples and the kind of face that had seen enough pack politics to skip the performance.

He gestured to the chair across from his desk. I sat. Freya stood behind me, Delta-straight, hands loose at her sides.

Marcus reviewed the application Freya had filed. One page. My name. My former pack. The partial-rejection status of my mark. He read it twice, then set it down and looked at me.

"Does Alpha Barnes know your location?"

"He will," I said. "But the mind-link is severed and I'm not on Ironveil territory. He has no legal claim here."

Marcus nodded slowly. "The Luna mark—"

"Is in partial-rejection status," I said. "Which means the bond's territorial claims are suspended."

He studied me for a long moment. Not unkind. Just measuring.

"You understand that if he petitions for visitation rights, I'm required to review it."

"I understand."

"And if he crosses pack lines without clearance, my warriors will escort him out."

"I understand that too."

He picked up a pen and signed the bottom of the form. Then he slid it across the desk.

"Welcome to Silvercrest, Miss Morrison."

I signed. My hand didn't shake. When I set the pen down, I felt something I hadn't felt in years—institutional standing in a city where Jaxon had none.

Freya walked me out. On the stairs she said, "You did good."

I didn't answer. I was too busy feeling the weight of the key in my pocket and the absence of cold on my neck.

Jaxon found me four days later.

I didn't see him. I smelled him first—that pine-and-smoke scent that used to make my wolf hum, back when I thought I had one. It drifted up from the street below my window at two in the morning.

I got up. Looked down.

He was standing on the sidewalk in wolf form. Massive. Dark fur slicked with rain. Staring up at my window like a ghost that didn't know it was dead.

I closed the curtain.

The next morning there was a box outside my door. I almost stepped on it. Inside: a still-warm casserole, homemade bread, and a note in his handwriting. *I'm sorry. Please let me explain.*

I brought it to Freya's kitchen. She looked at it, then at me.

"You want me to throw it out?"

"No." I opened the fridge and set it on the top shelf behind the milk. "I want you to eat it if you're hungry. I'm not touching it."

She grinned. "That's my girl."

The boxes kept coming. One every morning. Elaborate meals. Pastries. A thermos of soup. I stopped opening them. Freya started leaving them in the building's communal pantry with a note: *Free food. Help yourself.*

On the sixth day, a formal letter arrived at the Silvercrest pack house, addressed to Alpha Marcus Webb. Freya brought it to me at the agency office we'd been building together for two years—the one Jaxon had called "not a pack priority" when I'd asked for a modest fund allocation.

I opened it.

*Petition for Visitation Rights: Alpha Jaxon Barnes of Ironveil requests scheduled access to Gianna Morrison, residing under Silvercrest jurisdiction, to discuss bond restoration and reconciliation. Submitted with respect for territorial law and Silvercrest authority.*

It was written with the grave courtesy of a dignitary. Formal. Polite. Desperate.

I read it twice. Then I set it on the kitchen counter next to my laptop.

Freya watched me. "You going to answer it?"

"No."

"Marcus is going to ask."

"Then tell him I'm not interested in visitation. Or reconciliation. Or any other word that means the same thing."

I went back to my laptop. I had a pitch deck to finish for a client meeting on Friday. I worked fourteen hours that day. I ate Freya's cooking. I did not say Jaxon's name aloud.

I didn't say it the next day either. Or the day after that.

By day eleven, I realized I hadn't thought about him at all that morning until Freya asked if I wanted to grab lunch.

And the mark on my neck—still pale, still scarred, still cold—didn't hurt anymore.

It just was.
