Chapter 5

The porch was quiet except for the sound of crickets and Buster's steady breathing between us.

Kade sat to my left, close enough that I could smell dark amber and rain but far enough that our shoulders didn't touch. The alliance documents were stacked on the table inside. The tribunal packet was sealed. Everything that could be prepared had been prepared.

Tomorrow, three packs would gather in Silverfang's great hall. Tomorrow, I would stand before the Lycan Council and dismantle everything Derek had built.

Tonight, I just sat.

Buster shifted and pressed his head against my knee. I scratched behind his ears. His fur was warm under my fingers.

"I felt her the night I burned the wolfsbane," I said.

Kade didn't move. He just listened.

"Not her voice," I continued. "Not yet. Just—pressure. Like something huge was pushing up from underneath. I thought I was losing my mind."

The memory was sharp. The fire in the metal drum. The acrid smoke. The way my chest had cracked open and something volcanic had stirred inside.

"I was terrified," I said quietly.

Kade's voice was low when he spoke. "And now?"

I pressed two fingers to the mark on my neck. The cold was still there. The hollow was still there. But something else was there too now. Something that made the emptiness feel less permanent.

"I'm still terrified," I admitted. "Not of her. Of—" I stopped.

Kade waited.

I made myself say it. "Of the wanting. Of the way your scent makes her settle. Makes me—" I stopped again.

The silence stretched. Not uncomfortable. Just present.

Buster's tail thumped once against the porch.

"Four years ago," Kade said finally, "at the summit—I caught your scent for the first time."

I turned to look at him.

His profile was outlined against the moonlight. Strong jaw. Straight nose. Eyes fixed on something in the distance.

"It was wrong," he continued. "Your scent. Not bad. Wrong. Like something was covering it. Masking it." He paused. "But underneath—for just a moment—I caught wild rose and frost. And my wolf knew."

My breath caught.

"Knew what?"

Kade turned to meet my eyes. "That you were mine. That you'd always been mine. And that I couldn't do anything about it."

The words landed between us like stones dropped into still water.

"You were already marked," he said. "Already bonded. Even if that bond was poisoned, it was still intact. I couldn't act. Couldn't speak. Couldn't—" His jaw tightened. "I watched for four years. Watched him neglect you. Watched you hold that pack together alone. Watched you get quieter and thinner and somehow stronger through all of it. And I said nothing."

I stared at him. Really stared.

"Why are you telling me this now?"

"Because you asked about the wanting," Kade said simply. "And I wanted you to know—I've carried that wanting for four years. I know what it costs."

He didn't frame it as a claim. He didn't ask for anything. He just laid it out like evidence and left the silence open.

I pressed two fingers to Derek's mark again.

This time, the gesture wasn't entirely grief.

It was something else. Something I didn't have a name for yet.

Kade saw it. I knew he saw it.

But he didn't move closer. He didn't reach for me. He just stayed exactly where he was and let me breathe.

Inside my mind, Selene's voice was quiet but certain.

*He understands restraint. He understands waiting. That matters.*

I didn't answer her.

I just sat on the porch with Kade beside me and Buster between us and let the night settle around all three of us like a blanket.

Tomorrow would come soon enough.

---

I woke at dawn and dressed without Luna insignia.

No ceremonial sash. No pack colors. No symbols of the title I'd carried for three years.

I stood in front of the mirror and looked at myself. Plain clothes. Hair pulled back. The hollow mark on my neck visible above my collar.

I looked like someone who had nothing left to lose.

That was exactly right.

Selene stirred in my consciousness. Not speaking. Just present. A banked fire waiting for fuel.

I could feel the edges of something she wanted to do. Something enormous. Something I wasn't ready to name yet.

*Soon,* she said.

I nodded and left the room.

---

The great hall was already filling when I came downstairs.

Three packs. Dozens of wolves. The air thick with competing scents and barely concealed tension.

I walked through the main corridor and felt eyes follow me. Some curious. Some pitying. Some contemptuous.

I kept my spine straight and my face neutral.

Marcus found me before I reached the hall doors.

He looked terrible. Pale. Shadows under his eyes. The kind of exhaustion that comes from shame rather than lack of sleep.

"Luna," he said quietly.

I stopped.

He swallowed. "I suspected. The wolfsbane. I saw the procurement orders in the financial records months ago. I told myself it was pack medicine. I chose not to ask the question I didn't want answered."

His voice cracked slightly on the last word.

I looked at him for a long moment.

"What do you want, Marcus?"

"To help," he said. "If you'll let me. I know I don't deserve—"

"No," I interrupted. "You don't."

He flinched.

I pulled the physical evidence packet from my bag and held it out. "Stand in the front row. Hold this. Be counted."

Marcus took it with both hands like it was something sacred.

"Thank you, Luna."

I didn't correct him. I just walked past him toward the hall.

---

Kade caught me in the corridor five minutes before the Rite was scheduled to begin.

He stepped out of a side room and into my path. Not blocking. Just present.

"The Council elders are inside," he said. "Tribunal authority is in place."

I nodded.

He studied my face for a moment. Then he said, quietly, "Whatever happens in that hall—whatever form it takes—I won't step forward until you've already moved."

I met his eyes.

"I'm not here to finish your fight," he continued. "I'm here to finish what you start."

The distinction mattered.

I understood that he understood that.

"Okay," I said.

Kade stepped aside.

I straightened my spine, lifted my chin, and walked through the doors into the great hall.

He followed three steps behind.

---

The hall was packed.

Three rows of wolves on each side. Council elders at the front. The ceremonial podium in the center, empty and waiting.

I walked down the center aisle. Every eye in the room tracked me.

Near the back, I caught sight of Ronan Vale. Broad shoulders. Arrogant posture. The kind of Alpha who'd built his reputation on dominance rather than loyalty.

He made eye contact with two other Alphas and tilted his head toward me. The gesture was subtle. Contemptuous. Shared.

I saw it.

Selene saw it.

The banked fire in my chest got hotter.

*Soon,* she said again.

I reached the podium and turned to face the assembled wolves.

The Council elders sat in the front row. Three of them. Stern faces. Neutral expressions.

Marcus stood to the left, holding the evidence packet with both hands.

Kade stood near the back, exactly where he'd said he would be. Watching. Waiting.

I gripped the edge of the podium and began.

"I invoke the Luna Accord," I said clearly. "The right of a widowed or abandoned Luna to dissolve her pack's territory and redistribute its lands."

My voice didn't waver.

The hall was silent.

I continued. "Alpha Derek Crawford staged his death to abandon both his mate and his pack. He maintained a years-long affair with a trusted pack member. He systematically poisoned his Luna with wolfsbane to suppress her wolf and keep her powerless. He violated every oath he swore before the Moon Goddess."

I paused.

Every wolf in the room was listening now.

"The evidence is documented. The co-conspirator is named. The betrayal is absolute."

I was three sentences from completing the formal declaration.

Three sentences from the point of no return.

I opened my mouth to continue.

And the pack house doors exploded inward.
