Chapter 4

I should have known Martha would find a way to make it worse.

The visit was framed as an apology. Damien's idea, supposedly, though the precision of it—the timing, the audience of regional Alphas already watching the fallout from the ceremony—had Martha's fingerprints all over it. A magnanimous Alpha returning to make peace with his rejected mate's family. Clean optics. Cheap theater.

Rose had set out tea cups before they arrived. That was the part that stayed with me afterward—my mother, in her kitchen with the water-ring table and the chipped corner, setting out her good cups for people who had already decided she was nothing.

Damien came in first. Aileen behind him, hand resting at her side with the careful stillness of someone trying not to look like she was surveying a room she intended to own. Martha last, and she didn't bother pretending.

Her eyes moved across the kitchen once, slow and thorough, the way you look at something before you throw it away.

"Rose," she said, like the name itself was a minor inconvenience. "How modest. You've kept it exactly as I imagined."

Rose said nothing. She poured the tea.

"I think what my son is trying to express," Martha continued, settling into a chair she hadn't been invited to sit in, "is that Evelyn's situation needn't reflect poorly on you. Given your origins, it's—understandable that you wouldn't have known how to prepare her properly. An Omega's daughter, raised without a bloodline, without standing. You did what you could."

"Martha." Damien's voice had a warning in it, soft and useless.

"I'm simply saying," Martha said, folding her hands, "that Rose should be grateful. The rejection frees her from the pretense that she ever belonged in pack society in the first place. It's a kindness, really."

The word *barren* came next. I heard it land on Rose the way a stone lands on something already cracked—her shoulders pulled inward, just slightly, just enough that only I would notice.

I was already moving toward her when her hands started shaking.

Not nerves. Not anger. The tremor that started in her fingers and moved up through her wrists was the one I'd learned to dread over years of watching her hide it—the specific, terrible tremor that meant her body was doing the thing it sometimes did when stress hit the wrong nerve, when her chronic condition found a door left open.

"Mom." I caught her arm. Her breathing had gone shallow and wrong, too fast, not enough air behind it. She tried to wave me off and couldn't finish the gesture.

She went down against the counter and I went with her, both of us to the floor.

"The shelf," I said. My voice was steady because it had to be. "Damien—the high shelf, left of the stove. Brown bottle. Now."

I knew where it was. I'd put it there myself, three weeks ago, after the last bad episode—wolfsbane-laced tincture, specific concentration, the one Diane had helped me calibrate for Rose's particular sensitivity. I knew exactly how to administer it. I just couldn't reach it without letting go of my mother.

Damien was standing two feet from that shelf.

I watched him look at the bottle. I watched him look at me, on my knees with Rose's head against my shoulder, her breath coming in these small, desperate pulls. I watched his face do something complicated and still and calculated.

One second. Two. Three.

He did nothing.

I don't know what broke first—the grief, or the rage, or the seven years of carrying everything he refused to carry, or the sight of Rose's lips going pale. Something cracked open in my chest that had nothing to do with the dead bond mark on my neck. Something older than the mate ceremony, older than the rejection, older than every night I'd spent building a pack for a man who had been quietly, methodically taking me apart.

I moved before I decided to move.

I didn't fully understand what happened to my arm until I heard the wall crack. Damien hit the plaster hard, my forearm across his chest, and I was already reaching past him for the shelf, already turning back to Rose with the bottle in my hand, already measuring the dose with fingers that shook—not from fear, I realized distantly. From something waking up.

Rose's breathing steadied in under a minute. Color came back to her mouth. Her hand found mine on the floor and held it.

I stayed there until I was certain.

When I looked up, Aileen was staring at the claw marks in the plaster. Three parallel gouges, deep enough to show the lath underneath. I didn't remember making them.

Martha said nothing. Not one word. They left, and the door closed, and the kitchen was quiet except for Rose's breathing and the sound of my own pulse.

That night I went into the woods alone.

I didn't plan to shift. I didn't even know it was coming—only that I needed to be somewhere without walls, somewhere the grief and the rage and the image of Damien standing motionless beside that shelf had room to exist without breaking something else.

The pain, when it came, was enormous. My bones didn't just ache—they rewrote themselves, cracking and resetting in a sequence that felt like being rebuilt from the inside out, like something that had been compressed for twenty years suddenly demanding all the space it was owed. I bit down on a sound that would have woken the whole woods and pressed my forehead to the cold ground and let it happen.

And then—

*"I've been here the whole time. They poisoned us. But I never left you."*

The voice came from inside me, not like a thought but like a second heartbeat, low and clear and absolutely certain.

*Seraphine,* she said, when I asked.

I stood on four legs in the dark and felt the size of myself for the first time. Twice what I should have been. The silver-white of my fur caught the moonlight and held it. Something in me that had been silent and hollow and ashamed for twenty years simply—wasn't, anymore.

From the tree line, I heard Natalie make a sound I'd never heard from her before. Not a word. Just the soft, involuntary sound of someone whose knees have given out.

I turned my head toward her. She was on the ground, both hands pressed flat to the earth, staring at me with something that wasn't quite fear and wasn't quite awe and was entirely both.

*"They'll all see us now,"* Seraphine said, quiet and certain as stone.

I stood in the cold and the dark and the moonlight, and I let myself believe her.
