Chapter 4

The door exploded inward.

Wood splintered. Smoke poured through the opening like a living thing. Princeton stood in the doorway, backlit by flames, his chest heaving. His eyes swept the room.

Camilla first. She was crumpled at the top of the staircase, one hand pressed to her bleeding arm, her face streaked with tears and soot. She sobbed his name.

Then me.

I was on the floor ten feet from him. The silver blade was still buried in my stomach. My hands were slick with blood. The ceiling beam above me groaned, showering sparks. I could feel the poison spreading through my veins like ice, my wolf screaming in agony inside my chest.

I reached for him.

One hand. Shaking. Palm up. The universal gesture of a drowning woman.

His eyes met mine.

For one suspended moment, the world narrowed to that single point of contact. I saw him see me. Saw his gaze drop to the blade. To the blood pooling beneath me. To the flames crawling up the walls on either side.

Through the bond, I poured everything I had left into him. Not words. Just feeling. Raw and desperate and pleading.

*Save me. I am your mate.*

The bond carried it. I felt it land. Felt him receive it like a blow to the chest.

He looked at Camilla.

She was crying harder now, her voice breaking on his name, her uninjured hand reaching toward him. The shallow cut on her forearm bled theatrically down her wrist.

Princeton moved.

He crossed the room in three strides — past me, past the flames, past the blood — and scooped Camilla into his arms. She buried her face in his neck. He turned toward the staircase.

I tried to crawl. My body would not obey. The silver had spread too far. My muscles spasmed uselessly.

"Princeton," I whispered. My voice was gone. Smoke filled my lungs.

He stopped at the threshold. He did not turn around. He did not look back.

His voice cut through the roar of the fire — low, deliberate, vibrating through the mate bond with the force of divine law.

"Stay where you are, Luna. That is my order."

The bond seized me.

Every muscle locked. Every fiber froze. The Alpha command burned through the mate bond like a brand, and my body obeyed because it had no choice. My wolf thrashed inside me, howling, clawing at the invisible chains, but the bond was absolute. I could not move. Could not crawl. Could not turn my head.

The ceiling beam cracked.

Princeton's footsteps receded down the staircase. Camilla's sobs faded. The bond pulsed once — his satisfaction, his relief, his certainty that he had saved the right woman.

I was alone.

The flames closed in. The beam above me splintered, raining sparks onto my legs. I felt the fire lick at my skin. Felt the silver blade grinding against bone with every shallow breath. Felt the bond holding me in place like a fist around my spine.

I could not scream. My throat was full of smoke.

I thought of Avery. I thought of the moonlit rose garden I had promised him. I thought of the urn sitting on the table in the next room, and I prayed — to the Moon Goddess, to anyone — that someone would take it somewhere safe.

The world went gray at the edges.

Then the wall exploded.

Not the door. The exterior wall. Stone and plaster blasted inward, and through the smoke I saw a massive shape hurtling through the gap. Gideon Cross landed in a crouch, his eyes wild, his nose flaring as he tracked the scent of blood and silver.

He found me in seconds.

He did not hesitate. He did not ask permission. He scooped me off the floor — one arm under my knees, one around my back, careful of the blade still embedded in my stomach — and turned toward the shattered wall.

The bond screamed at me to obey. To stay. To freeze.

Gideon's movement overrode it. He was stronger than the command. Stronger than the bond. He carried me through the gap in the wall and into the cold night air, and the bond snapped like a wire pulled too tight.

I gasped. The command released. My lungs filled with clean air.

Gideon was running. Shouting for healers. His grip on me was iron-steady, and through the haze of pain I felt something else — something warm pressed against his chest, trapped between his body and mine.

Avery's urn.

He had gone back for it. Pulled it from the wreckage. Understood, without being told, what it meant.

Behind us, the upper wing collapsed inward with a sound like thunder. Flames shot into the sky. Sparks rained down on the courtyard.

Gideon did not stop running until we reached the healer's ward.

---

I woke in pieces.

Pain first. Deep and grinding, centered in my abdomen. Then cold. Then the sharp medicinal smell of the healer's ward.

I opened my eyes.

The ceiling was white. Sterile. A single lantern burned low on the bedside table. My body was wrapped in bandages. The silver blade was gone, but I could still feel its ghost — a hollow, burning ache where it had been.

Elara Vance sat in the chair beside my bed, her hands folded in her lap. When she saw me stir, she leaned forward.

"Don't move," she said quietly. "The wound is closed, but the silver poisoning will take time."

I turned my head. Slowly. Every movement hurt.

Avery's urn sat on the bedside table. Whole. Unharmed.

Beside it, smoothed flat and weighted down with a pen, were the rejection documents.

I stared at them. The edges were singed. One corner was blackened. But the words were still legible.

Elara followed my gaze.

"He came," she said. Her voice was carefully neutral. "Early this morning. While you were unconscious. He stood in the doorway for maybe thirty seconds. Then he left."

I looked at the documents. At the formal vow printed in clean, legal script. At the blank line waiting for my signature.

Through the bond, I felt nothing. Not guilt. Not fear. Not even curiosity. Just a cold, distant blankness, like static on a dead channel.

I reached for the pen.

My hand shook. The bandages pulled. Pain flared through my abdomen.

I signed my name.

Elara watched in silence. When I finished, she took the papers, folded them carefully, and placed them in a sealed envelope.

"I'll file them with the Council," she said. "And I'll testify. To everything I saw."

I nodded. My throat was too raw to speak.

She stood. She squeezed my uninjured hand once, firm and deliberate. Then she left.

I lay in the dark and listened to the distant sounds of the pack house — voices, footsteps, the low hum of life continuing without me. The bond mark on my neck throbbed, dull and rhythmic, counting down to the moment I would speak the words aloud.

I closed my eyes.

Inside my chest, the wolf was still. Waiting.

"Soon," I whispered.

This time, I knew exactly what came next.
