Chapter 5

The healer's cabin smelled like yarrow and wet wool. I sat on the examination bench while a junior healer—Mara, maybe twenty, trained under Natasha for the last year—wrapped my knee with practiced efficiency. The ligament wasn't torn, just strained badly enough that walking would hurt for days.

She worked in silence, her hands steady on the bandaging. The preparation she'd used to reduce the swelling sat in a small jar on the counter beside me. I recognized it immediately. Willow bark base, arnica tincture, a specific ratio of comfrey root that my grandmother had perfected over decades.

Mara had learned it from Natasha.

Natasha had learned it from a journal she stole.

I said nothing. Just watched Mara's hands move through the motions of knowledge that had been mine before it was hers.

The door to the adjacent room stood slightly ajar. Two voices drifted through—warriors, by the cadence. Kade and another Delta whose name I couldn't place.

"Voss arrives tomorrow," Kade said. "Heard he's got specific expectations."

The other warrior laughed, low and uncomfortable. "Same expectations he had at Riverbend last spring. Alpha Garrett gave him what he wanted. She-wolf from the Omega ranks. Kept the alliance intact."

"Ethan won't do that."

"Won't he?" A pause. "You saw what he did to his own Luna. You think he'll risk a border agreement over some servant?"

Something under my ribs moved. Not a thought. Not even anger. Just a low, soundless vibration that started in my chest and spread outward, rattling through my bones like a second pulse.

Mara's hands stopped on the bandage. She looked at me, her brow furrowed. "You okay? That was a weird spasm."

I forced my breathing level. "Yeah. Muscle cramp. Sorry."

She finished wrapping and stepped back. "Keep weight off it for two days. Come back if the swelling gets worse."

I nodded and left.

That evening, I sat on my cot in the servants' wing and added the conversation to my log. Date. Names. Exact words. The list of things I knew and no one else was tracking had grown long enough that the pages no longer lay flat.

I stared at the entry for a long time.

Then I closed the log and went to see my mother.

—

She was awake when I arrived, sitting upright in bed with her hands folded in her lap. The fog that had plagued her for months was gone. Her eyes tracked me as I entered, sharp and clear, the way they used to be when I was young and she was teaching me to identify poisons by scent alone.

I closed the door and pulled the oilskin pouch from inside my jacket.

"These are Grandma's journals," I said quietly. "The originals. Every formula, every compound signature, every date."

I set them in her hands.

She opened the pouch and ran her fingers over the worn leather covers, her expression unreadable.

"If something happens to me tomorrow," I continued, "these prove everything. The theft. The timeline. You know what they mean better than anyone."

My mother looked up at me. Her gaze moved over my face with a healer's attentiveness—cataloging, measuring, reading symptoms I hadn't voiced.

"Something is changing in you," she said quietly. "Has been for weeks."

I didn't answer.

She gripped the pouch tighter. "I wondered when she would finally decide it was safe."

My chest tightened. The pressure under my ribs pulsed once, steady and patient.

"Mom—"

"I know," she said. Her voice was calm. Certain. "I've always known. Your grandmother knew too. We just didn't know when."

I stared at her.

She reached out and took my hand. Her fingers were warm and steady. "Whatever happens tomorrow, you come back to me. Understand?"

I nodded.

She squeezed once, then let go.

I left the journals with her and walked back through the darkened corridors, my knee aching with every step, my wolf humming beneath my skin like a live wire.

—

The next morning, I was assigned to the Luna suite to collect linens before the banquet preparations began.

I moved quietly, efficiently, gathering towels and bedding from the adjoining washroom while Ethan and Natasha spoke in the main room. They didn't know I was there. Or they didn't care.

Natasha's voice carried through the doorway, warm and instructive.

"You need to present strength while offering concessions," she said. "Frame it as alliance positioning—territorial buffer language, face-saving exit clauses. Make him feel like he's gaining ground without actually giving him anything critical."

I froze.

I knew those words. Every single one.

I'd written them two years ago, in a memo on border strategy that Ethan had asked me to draft when he was negotiating with a northern pack. He'd presented it as his own work. I'd never corrected him.

Natasha had no idea where the framework came from. And Ethan, apparently, had forgotten.

I stood in the washroom with an armful of linens and felt the irony land with the precision of a correctly identified compound.

Then Ethan spoke.

"What about Voss's... specific requests?"

Natasha's tone shifted. Careful. "You mean the she-wolf."

"He's made it clear he expects an appropriate arrangement."

"Then offer one." Her voice was calm. Practical. "Someone from the Omega ranks. Discreet. No one the pack will miss."

Silence.

Then Ethan: "The wolfless one. Sophia."

"Perfect," Natasha said.

I set the linens down on the washroom counter, very carefully, so they wouldn't make a sound.

Then I walked out of the suite, down the corridor, and back to the servants' wing.

My hands were steady. My breathing was even.

I pulled my personal log from its hiding place and began copying.

—

It took two hours to transcribe everything onto fresh parchment. Every date. Every error. Every documented incident from three years of invisible observation. I sealed it inside a second oilskin pouch and wrote a single line on the outside: *For the Lycan diplomatic envoy. To be opened in the event of my disappearance or death.*

I found Iris in the care wing an hour before the banquet was set to begin.

"I need you to deliver this," I said, handing her the pouch. "To the Lycan Prince's guest quarters. If I don't come back for it by morning, make sure he gets it."

Iris stared at the pouch, then at me. "Sophia, what—"

"Please," I said.

She took it.

I walked back to my cot, changed into the servant's uniform required for banquet service, and braided my hair back with hands that did not shake.

This wasn't a contingency plan.

This was my opening move.

Whatever happened tonight, the evidence was already in motion.
