Chapter 2

Victoria moved into the Luna suite three days after the rejection ceremony. I heard her perfume before I saw her—synthetic roses, too sweet, the smell coating the corridor like something sprayed from a bottle. It made my wolf stir every time, a low heat rising in my chest that I had to swallow down.

I was still in the Luna suite then. Massimo hadn't told me to leave yet. So I watched from my doorway as Victoria's belongings migrated past me in waves: suitcases carried by Omegas, silk dresses on hangers, a vanity mirror wrapped in bubble wrap. She smiled at me once as she passed. I didn't smile back.

Cason's toys appeared in Oliver's room on the fourth day.

I wheeled myself down the hall and stopped at the doorway. The room still smelled like Oliver—crayons and the lavender soap I used to wash his hair. But now there were plastic trucks on the floor and a stuffed bear on the bed that wasn't his.

My wolf surged. Not grief this time. Something hotter.

I gripped the doorframe and breathed through it until the heat receded. Then I turned around and wheeled myself back to my room.

The pack stopped saying my name after that.

They called me nothing. When I wheeled through the corridors, they stepped aside without looking at me. When I entered the dining hall, conversations paused and restarted around me like I was a gap in the air. The deference that used to follow me—the nods, the murmured "Luna"—recalibrated toward Victoria with brutal efficiency.

She walked through the pack house like she'd always belonged there. Her hips swayed. Her laugh was too loud. And Massimo tracked her with his eyes the way he used to track me.

My wolf responded to each erasure with that same low, simmering heat. It built slowly, layer by layer, until I could feel it humming under my skin even when I was sitting still.

I'd never felt this from my wolf before. Not even in the early days of the mate bond. This wasn't grief. This was something older. Something harder.

On the seventh day, Massimo summoned me to his office.

I wheeled myself down the corridor and knocked once. His voice came through the door, flat and businesslike. "Enter."

He sat behind his desk with his hands folded. He didn't stand when I came in. He didn't look at me directly.

"I'm finalizing your departure arrangements," he said. His tone was calm, like we were discussing a supply shipment. "You'll vacate the Luna suite by end of day. We've prepared quarters for you in the east wing."

The east wing. The Omega quarters.

I kept my face blank. "Understood."

His jaw tightened. He leaned forward slightly, and I felt it coming before he spoke—the shift in the air, the weight pressing down.

"Selene." His voice dropped into Alpha tone. The command hit like a physical thing, bending my spine toward compliance. "You will relocate to the east wing by sunset. You will not argue. You will not delay."

My body obeyed before my mind caught up. My shoulders curved inward. My head bowed. The wheelchair rolled back half an inch.

But my wolf exploded.

Heat flooded my chest, my throat, my eyes. I felt my pupils dilate—gold bleeding into my vision, sharp and sudden. For one uncontrolled second, I looked up at Massimo and let him see it.

He stopped mid-breath.

Something uncertain crossed his face. His Alpha tone faltered, the command losing its edge. He blinked at me like he was seeing something he didn't recognize.

I didn't speak. I wheeled myself backward, turned, and left his office.

The gold in my eyes didn't fully recede for several minutes.

The Omega quarters were smaller than I expected. One room, one narrow bed, a single window that looked out over the training grounds. No caretaker. No pack resources beyond basic meals left outside my door twice a day.

I didn't mind.

The east wing shared a wall with the training grounds. I could hear Massimo drilling his warriors every morning—his voice carrying clearly through the stone, sharp and commanding. I listened to the patrol schedules, the shift rotations, the names of the sentries assigned to border duty.

Two of them seemed uncomfortable when Victoria's name came up. They didn't say much, but their silences were specific. I filed that away.

On the tenth day, Victoria staged a formal introduction ceremony for Cason.

I wasn't invited. But I positioned myself near an open window in the east wing corridor and listened.

Massimo's voice rang out across the courtyard, formal and clear. "I present Cason Lane as my acknowledged heir and future Alpha of Shadowvale Pack."

I heard the collective acknowledgment ripple through the pack mind-link—a sound I wasn't part of anymore but could still sense at the edges, like hearing a conversation through a closed door.

Massimo placed his hand on Cason's shoulder. "I claim you," he said, and spoke the boy's name into the link.

My wolf slammed against the inside of my chest.

It was a full-body surge—not dormant, not broken, not the quiet thing that had curled up and died the night Oliver came home in pieces. This was heat and fury and something so large I couldn't contain it.

I gripped the windowsill until my knuckles went white. The mate mark scar on my neck throbbed cold, sharp, like frostbite setting in.

I didn't scream. I didn't move.

I pressed my thumb against the scar and breathed through the surge until my wolf receded.

Then I pulled Oliver's drawings from my jacket pocket and smoothed the last one against my lap. Three figures in a field. Massimo smiling. Oliver's sun, still unfinished in the upper left corner.

I folded it carefully and tucked it back into my pocket.

My wolf was awake now. Fully awake. And she was done waiting.
