Chapter 4

The black-and-silver banner of the Lycan Prince went up at the western border two days later.

Under inter-pack treaty law, Kieran was well within his rights to set up a diplomatic envoy residence on neutral soil. He didn’t sneak around, and he didn’t hide behind the tree line. Instead, he filed a formal cross-territorial petition directly with the Shadowmere council, requesting permission to visit me as a matter of diplomatic courtesy.

Brady couldn’t deny it. To reject a Lycan Prince’s standard diplomatic request without cause was an act of aggression, and Shadowmere was in no shape for a territorial war.

The council approved Kieran’s petition in under forty-five minutes.

Word spread through the pack house like wildfire. A warrior I knew from border duty told me Brady had locked himself in his third-floor office the moment the parchment arrived. When Brady read the approved stamped clearance, his golden Alpha aura flickered so hard that the desk lamp on his desk rattled. To save face, he hauled Beta Colt into the study and spent two hours demanding a comprehensive border-monitoring log that nobody needed, just to pretend he was still the one giving orders.

At three that afternoon, the gravel road outside my cottage crunched under heavy boots.

I stepped onto the front porch, drying my hands on a faded dish towel. Scout slipped past my ankles, his gray hackles rising, a soft, warning rumble vibrating deep in his small chest.

Kieran stood in the driveway.

He wore a dark canvas jacket and heavy boots, holding a wooden crate under one arm. His scent drifted ahead of him—frost, ancient cedar, and clean, cold wind. He didn’t carry weapons. He didn’t surround himself with royal guards.

When he saw Scout growling on the porch step, Kieran stopped.

He didn't use an Alpha tone. He didn't square his broad shoulders to show dominance. Without a single word, Kieran dropped straight down onto one knee in the freezing gravel. He lowered his head slightly and held out his right hand, palm up, fingers relaxed.

He brought himself level with the stray.

Scout froze. His dark nose twitched, taking in the scent of an apex predator who had just chosen to make himself small. The little wolf limped forward, his splinted leg dragging slightly in the dirt.

Ten seconds passed. Twenty.

At thirty seconds, Scout reached Kieran’s boot. He lowered his snout and pressed the wet tip of his nose right into Kieran’s open palm.

Kieran didn't grab him. He just curved his fingers gently behind Scout’s tattered gray ears, scratching the sweet spot right at the base of his skull.

Standing in the doorway, a sudden, sharp ache pulled behind my ribs.

Deep down where the wolfsbane had frozen my wolf, something stirred. It wasn't a roar—she was still too poisoned to stand—but she leaned into the cage of my ribs. She recognized him. Not because he was royal, and not because he was strong, but because his first instinct when facing something broken was the exact same as mine.

I cleared my throat. "He usually bites strangers."

Kieran looked up, a faint, genuine half-smile touching his mouth. "He knows good people."

He stood, dusting the gravel from his knee, and set the crate on my porch table. Inside were clean cuts of salted venison, two sealed bags of whole oats, fresh bundles of dried winter herbs, and two thick, leather-bound books on inter-territorial tribunal law.

"I heard the pack library refused your access card," Kieran said mildly.

"They did." I looked at the heavy gold lettering on the leather spines. "Thank you."

"Don't thank me, Avery. It's just law."

"Tea's hot," I said, gesturing toward the door. "If you have time."

He stepped inside without hesitation. The cottage was cramped and smelled like woodsmoke, but he sat down on the rickety wooden stool by the stove as if he belonged there. I poured boiling water over dried mint leaves, slid a chipped ceramic mug across the rough table, and sat across from him.

I didn't ask him why he was here. I didn't ask about summer camp fifteen years ago.

"If an Alpha allows a chosen member to commit a felony on pack grounds," I asked, looking straight into his gray eyes, "does the case fall under local pack council, or can it be elevated to a neutral Lycan tribunal?"

Kieran wrapped his large hands around the hot mug. The corners of his eyes crinkled with quiet approval.

"If it involves poison," he answered softly, "it is an automatic Lycan jurisdiction."

The following morning, I stood in the center of the council hall.

The weekly review meeting was mandatory for all pack members, but I had been formally summoned by name.

Brady sat at the head of the long oak table, dressed in his dark Alpha coat. His face looked hollow, the dark circles under his eyes betraying nights of sleeplessness. Sitting right beside him—in the carved chair that belonged to the Luna—was Lilith.

She wore a tailored cream-colored wool dress. In front of her rested my training records.

"The pack's winter grain reserves are down nine percent," Lilith began, her voice carrying smoothly over the assembled elders. She didn't look at Brady; she looked at the council. "Every adult member is required to contribute combat readiness in exchange for pack security. Avery Riley has failed three consecutive shift drills."

She picked up the ledger and turned it toward the elders, pointing her manicured finger at the heavy red ink.

"Three failures. Marked as wolfless by Gamma Keller," Lilith said, her tone dripping with calculated pity. "Feeding a non-contributing member during winter is an unnecessary resource drain. I recommend demoting her to Omega labor duties. Laundry, kitchen utility, and ditch clearing."

Murmurs broke out along the council benches. Several elders nodded.

Brady stared fixedly at the blotter on the table. He didn't look at me. His knuckles tightened around his silver pen until the metal bowed, but his lips stayed pressed shut. He didn't say a word. He let her speak for him.

"Any objections?" Judson asked from the corner, his voice flat.

Silence answered.

"Motion carried," the council secretary announced. He slid the reassignment document across the polished wood toward me, alongside a black ballpoint pen.

I walked up to the table. I didn't flinch. I didn't drop my head, and I didn't look at Lilith’s smug, triumphant smile.

I picked up the pen and signed my name in clean, even strokes across the bottom line.

"I need a dated, official copy stamped with the council seal," I said, my voice quiet and steady.

The secretary blinked, surprised by the request, but reached for the brass pack stamp. *Thump.* The purple ink bit into the heavy paper.

He handed me the duplicate.

"Thank you," I said simply.

I turned and walked out of the hall, the parchment cool against my fingertips.

That night, beneath the floorboards of my cottage, I unlocked the flat cedar box. I laid the stamped reassignment order right beside the glass vials of wolfsbane and my training notes.

Lilith thought she had humiliated me. She thought she had stripped me of my pride.

She had no idea that with every piece of paper she stamped, she was handing me the rope to hang her with.
