Chapter 3

The tremor in my chest receded slowly, leaving my fingertips burning like white-hot coals against the stone. I straightened my spine, smoothed the front of my wool tunic, and pressed two fingers to my left wrist until the beat steadied.

Within an hour, Rhett made his move.

He didn't come to my quarters. He didn't summon me back to his desk. Instead, his voice echoed through the pack house link, clipped and absolute, summoning Beta Marcus to the eastern wing. I didn't need to eavesdrop to understand the shift in the air; the Ironveil timberland was an extension of my own pulse. By late afternoon, the change had already taken root.

Two heavy-set Gammas were pulled from the southern border and redeployed three miles out into the western timber. The perimeter wrapping around the hidden hemlock grove—and the cabin concealed within it—was scrubbed from the routine map. It was officially reclassified as restricted patrol ground.

No pack member was permitted within a mile of the boundary.

Not even the Luna.

At five that evening, I walked down the central staircase into the common area to collect the evening kitchen tallies. A low fire crackled in the hearth. Half a dozen wolves lingered around the long oak tables—three border scouts, an elder, and two young Omegas sorting winter blankets.

Marcus stood by the mantle, his broad shoulders rigid in his leather patrol vest. As soon as my boots hit the flagstone, the room fell dead quiet. The air smelled faintly of cedar smoke and nervous sweat.

Marcus cleared his throat and stepped forward, blocking my path to the pantry.

"Luna Natalie," he said. His voice was deliberately pitched to carry into every corner of the high-ceilinged room. "A brief administrative notice before shift change."

I stopped two paces away, holding my ledger against my chest. "Go ahead, Marcus."

"By order of Alpha Rhett, the western hemlock sector between markers fourteen and twenty-two has been placed under quarantine," he recited. He kept his eyes locked strictly on the bridge of my nose, refusing to meet my gaze. "Hostile scent traces were flagged during midday sweep. The route is off-limits to all personnel until further notice. No exceptions."

It was a clumsy lie, thin enough to see through. Marker fourteen began precisely where the trail to Regina’s cabin branched off. Everyone in the room knew the western ridge hadn't seen rogue activity in six years.

The three scouts instantly looked down at their mugs. The elder shifted in his chair, clearing his throat and staring into the flames. The two Omegas hunched their shoulders, pretending to fold wool that was already neat.

They all knew. They knew Rhett had locked off the land to shield what was inside it, and they were choosing to look at the floor.

"Understood," I said. My voice was calm, entirely flat. "I will adjust the patrol routes accordingly. Thank you for the update, Marcus."

Marcus blinked, thrown by the absence of anger, the lack of an argument. He nodded once, stiffly, and stepped aside.

I didn't linger. I walked back up the stairs, my boots making no sound on the runner. I didn't fight the wall he had built around her. I simply noted it.

Five miles to the south, beyond the boundary lines where Ironveil territory bled into unclaimed highway, Regina Bishop was operating with no such restraint.

My refusal to shatter had unsettled her. For eight years, she had fed on the assumption that I was a broken, pitiful thing—a placeholder who kept Rhett's ledgers balanced while she held his throat in the dark. But the silence in the Great Hall, my cold indifference to his Alpha tone, and above all, the mind-link memory fragment I now possessed had turned her arrogance into panic.

If that memory reached the Lycan Court, Rhett’s staged heroism on the northern ridge would be recognized for what it was: high treason against pack law.

She didn't run to Rhett this time. She took matters into her own hands.

Using a burner phone and a human courier who knew nothing of wolves, she reached beyond the mountains to the Bloodthorn syndicate—mercenary rogues, feral and packless, who killed for untraceable cash. Her instructions, sent in clean, encrypted text, left nothing to chance.

*Silverpine Pack. Northern perimeter. Target the Beta’s residence before the alarms sound. Leave no survivors among the senior bloodline.*

She believed she was being surgical. If she cut down Stanley and my mother, she would sever my roots. A she-wolf without a mate’s mark and without a family pack to take her back would have nowhere left to run. She thought grief would finally crush the spine out of me.

Night fell heavy and suffocating over the pack house.

I sat at my desk in the west wing, the hand-carved wooden box open beside me. The scent of dried chamomile and mint drifted through the room as I cross-referenced the final alliance parchment. The candle flame beside my inkwell flickered, caught in a sudden, cold draft that didn't come from the window.

A sharp, electric jolt struck the center of my skull.

I dropped my quill. The black ink splattered across the parchment, soaking into the fibers.

*...Natalie...*

The mind-link was faint, threadbare with distance, but the timbre of the voice was unmistakable. It was my father.

*Dad?* I threw my thoughts into the link, gripping the edge of the desk. *Dad, what's wrong?*

What came back wasn't words. It was pure terror, raw and jagged. Through the fading familial link, the sounds hit me in visceral waves—the violent splintering of heavy timber, the frantic shouting of Silverpine sentries, the deafening roar of fire eating through dry pine.

*...mercenaries...* Stanley’s voice tore through the static, ragged and breathless, drowned out by the savage snarling of strange wolves. *...breached the inner courtyard. They aren't taking prisoners... Natalie, don't—*

A wet, sickening crunch echoed through the mental bond.

*Dad!* I screamed internally, my nails biting into the wood of the desk. *Dad, answer me!*

*...run...*

His voice dissolved into a terrible, choking gasp. Then, a sharp pop—like a thread snapping under unbearable tension.

The connection severed.

A wall of absolute, freezing static slammed into my mind. The faint, warm presence of my father’s soul—the tether that had anchored me since I was a pup—simply ceased to exist.

I stood in the center of the dark room, motionless. One second. Two seconds. Three seconds.

The air in my lungs turned to ash.

I didn't grab a coat. I didn't close the box.

I ripped the door open and bolted down the hall.
