Chapter 4

The pain came in waves.

Not like the bond-pain from the rejection — that had been fire, searing and immediate. This was different. This was something tearing loose inside me, slow and wet and wrong. I lay on the stone stairs where I had landed, my cheek pressed to the cold surface, and felt warmth spreading beneath me.

I knew what it was before I looked.

Above me, Blaire stood on the landing. She had not moved. She was watching me the way a hunter watches prey bleed out — patient, interested, already certain of the outcome.

"Marcus!" she called, her voice carrying down the corridor with perfect calm. "Maisy fell. Send for the Omega healer."

I tried to push myself up. My arms would not hold. The silver cuffs burned where they pressed against the stone but that pain was nothing, background noise, drowned out by the deep wrongness radiating from my belly.

Then the bond opened.

It was not a slow opening. It was a rupture. Something in my body tore and the agony of it transmitted through the mate channel like lightning down a wire, straight into Oliver's chest.

I felt him receive it.

For one heartbeat — one single, desperate heartbeat — I felt him freeze. Wherever he was, whatever he was doing, the wrongness in the bond made him go still. I felt his wolf lift its head. I felt confusion arrive, then alarm, then —

Then Blaire's voice, smooth and reasonable, sliding into his mind through her own link.

*Maisy attacked me. I defended myself. She fell.*

The alarm in the bond flickered.

I waited. I lay bleeding on the stone stairs and I waited for him to come, for the boy from the rogue fringes to remember what this kind of pain meant, to choose me just once over the version of reality that required no accountability from him.

He did not come.

Instead, his presence in the bond shifted — not toward me, away. Back to whatever meeting I had interrupted. Back to the strategy table, the treaty maps, the concerns that mattered. The bond pulsed once with his decision and then went quiet.

Indifference.

It arrived in my chest as a physical weight, cold and final as a door closing.

I closed my eyes.

Footsteps on the stairs. Not Oliver's. Cedric's.

The Beta knelt beside me without speaking. His hands — careful, too careful — slid under my shoulders. He lifted me like I was made of glass. I felt him pause when he saw the blood on the stone. I felt his eyes track up to Blaire on the landing, then down to the specific angle of bruising on my collarbone.

He said nothing.

He carried me back to the Omega quarters. The guards opened the door. He set me on the stone floor as gently as the space allowed and stepped back into the corridor.

The door closed. The lock turned.

I heard him sit down outside. His weight settled against the wood. He did not leave.

It was the closest thing to an apology a Beta could offer without breaking his oath.

The Omega healer came an hour later.

She was not Edna. She was younger, efficient, someone I did not know. She examined me in silence, her hands quick and impersonal. When she finished, she packed her supplies and stood.

"There is nothing to be done," she said quietly. "It is already gone."

I knew that. I had felt it go.

She left a cloth and a basin of water. The door closed behind her.

I lay on the stone floor and stared at the ceiling. The bond was still open — a channel I could not close, transmitting Oliver's presence into my body whether I wanted it or not. I felt him eating dinner. I felt him laughing at something Cedric said. I felt Blaire's hand on his shoulder and the way his wolf settled under her touch, content.

He had felt the pup die and chosen to believe I had attacked first.

Something inside me that had been holding on — some last fragile thread of the girl who lit ceremony torches and negotiated treaties and loved him with everything she had — finally let go.

I stopped counting my breaths.

I stopped pressing my fingertips to my wrist.

I ate when they brought food because a body needs fuel to run. I answered when spoken to because compliance bought invisibility. The guards reported I was cooperative. Docile. No longer a problem.

What they did not see was that behind my eyes, I had gone very still.

I resumed timing the rotations. Marcus checked the lock twice — 6:00, noon, 6:00, midnight. The older Delta dozed between 1:00 and 3:00 a.m. The torch near my door guttered in the draft from the east, where Edna had said the drainage gap waited.

I catalogued what I would need. The herbs Edna had given me. The wolfsbane antidote. The knowledge of which corridor emptied when.

I did not think about the pup. I could not. If I thought about it, I would break, and I needed to stay frozen just a little longer.

The memory surfaced on the tenth night.

I had not called it. It arrived unbidden, vivid and cruel: a Winter Solstice pack run, years ago, when Oliver and I were still new. The snow had been deep that year. We had run through it side by side, our wolves young and fast, and when we stopped at the ridge overlooking Ironveil territory — land he had just claimed, land we had bled for together — he shifted back to human and pulled something from his pocket.

A carved fang pendant. Rough, unpolished, made with his own hands.

He had placed it around my neck, his fingers cold against my skin, and spoken a vow I could still hear in his voice.

*You will be my only Luna. I swear it before my wolf. Before the Moon Goddess. Only you.*

I had believed him.

I lay on the stone floor of the Omega quarters and understood, with a clarity that felt like a bone breaking cleanly, that the boy who made that vow and the man who felt his pup die through the bond and did nothing were the same person.

The grief I had been holding at bay finally cracked open.

It did not come as tears. It came as a sound — low, guttural, animal. A howl I could not shape with my human throat.

Deep in my chest, something enormous stirred.

Not the wolf I had felt pacing behind my ribs. Something older. Larger. A presence that had been sleeping my entire life, waiting for the moment I finally stopped asking permission to survive.

My bones began to ache.

The silver cuffs flared hot against my wrists — not the slow burn of prolonged contact but a sudden, vicious heat, like the metal had touched live current.

I gasped. My back arched off the floor.

The thing in my chest snarled.

And the cuffs shattered.
