Chapter 3

I felt him before I heard him.

The air in the suite changed. That's the only way I can describe it—it thickened, pressurized, like the moment before a storm breaks when the sky goes a particular shade of green and every animal within a mile goes quiet. The wolves around me responded without choosing to. I felt the enforcers' grip on my arms loosen by a fraction, not releasing me, just distracted, their bodies pulling toward submission the way iron filings pull toward a magnet. One of Tiffany's attendants made a small, involuntary sound. Someone's champagne flute hit the table too hard.

I was still face-down on the marble. My right hand was a hot, wet disaster beneath me. The pendant fragments were somewhere near my cheek. I did not move.

Polished shoes stopped three inches from my face.

Black. Expensive. Not a scuff on them.

"What happened here."

Not a question. A sentence with no room in it for anything except the truth, delivered in a voice that was low and unhurried and absolute. An Alpha voice. Not the raised kind that tries to prove something. The kind that has never needed to prove anything.

Tiffany moved fast. I heard the soft rustle of her dress, the click of her heels as she crossed to him.

"She attacked me." Her voice had shifted completely—soft now, a little breathless, carefully fragile. "I don't know what her problem was, she just—she grabbed at me, and I had to defend myself, and the enforcers—"

"She's bleeding."

A pause. Tiffany recalibrated. "She was aggressive. You know how unstable some of these camp releases can be. I was frightened."

I kept my eyes on the floor. I kept my breathing even. My wolf had been silent for so long that I had stopped expecting anything from her, and so when she moved—a single slow shift, deep in my chest, like something turning over in sleep—I almost missed it.

Almost.

And then the scent hit me.

Dark cedar. Thunderstorm. Clean and deep and—

My wolf didn't howl. She didn't surge or rage. She just said one word, very quietly, in the place behind my ribs where she lives.

*Mate.*

The word landed like a stone dropped into still water. Quiet. Certain. Devastating.

I raised my head.

He was tall. Tailored suit, dark, fitted like it had been made specifically for his shoulders, which it probably had. The kind of man who fills a doorway without trying. His aura sat on the room like a hand pressed flat against a table—present, heavy, not performing anything. Just there.

He was looking at Tiffany. Then his eyes dropped to me.

Three seconds. I counted them.

For three seconds he looked at the bleeding Omega on his floor and didn't know her. I watched it happen—the slight narrowing of his eyes, the automatic Alpha assessment of a situation, the calculation. He saw a woman in a staff uniform with her hand destroyed and her face expressionless and he was already deciding what to do about the inconvenience of it.

Then the scent reached him.

I watched that happen too.

His whole body stopped. Not flinched—stopped, the way a clock stops, every moving part going still at once. The Alpha composure didn't crack so much as it simply ceased to function, like a circuit interrupted. Something moved through his face that I had no name for and didn't want one.

"Nicole—"

My name in his mouth. Broken at the edges. Like he'd been holding it somewhere and it had come apart on the way out.

I said nothing.

I looked at him. I let him look at me. I let him see my hand—the blood still tracking slow lines across my palm, the fingers that wouldn't straighten, the ruin of what Tiffany's diamond-tipped claws had made of the hand I used to channel my healing aura through.

I let him see all of it, and I kept my face very still, and I did not give him a single thing to hold onto.

Whatever he was looking for behind my eyes—recognition, pain, the pull of the mate bond, something that answered him—he didn't find it. I know because I watched him search for it, and I watched the moment he understood it wasn't there.

His knees hit the marble.

---

The Silvercrest infirmary smelled like antiseptic and dried herbs. Maren Cole worked without speaking, which I appreciated. She was a small, quiet she-wolf with careful hands and the particular stillness of someone who has learned that patients say more when you don't fill the silence for them.

She cleaned my hand first. Then she photographed it—methodically, from four angles, the clinical documentation of someone who understood that what she was looking at was evidence before it was injury. She didn't explain why. She just did it.

When she drew blood for the panel, she held the vial up briefly to the light before capping it. Her expression didn't change.

She worked for another few minutes before she spoke.

"Your wolfsbane levels," she said, not looking up from the bandaging, "are not from environmental exposure."

I watched her hands move. Precise. Efficient.

"The concentration pattern," she continued, "is consistent with long-term, repeated administration. Months. Possibly longer."

The room was very quiet.

"I've seen it before," she said. Just that. Just once.

I looked at the ceiling for a moment. Then I looked back at her.

"Keep the records complete," I said.

She tied off the last bandage. She met my eyes for exactly one second.

"They already are."
