Chapter 2

The drive back to Silverfang territory was silent.

Reese sat in the passenger seat, her window cracked open just enough to let the night air cut through the lingering scent of the banquet hall. I kept my hands on the steering wheel. Ten and two. Steady.

She didn't ask if I was okay. She knew better.

The highway stretched out ahead of us, empty and dark. My wolf was quiet inside me — not calm, but spent. The phantom burn where Dante's mark had been still pulsed with every heartbeat. It would fade. Eventually. The Moon Goddess didn't design rejected bonds to kill you. Just to hurt.

Reese's phone buzzed. She glanced at it, then silenced it without reading.

"Pack chatter?" I asked.

"Everyone who was at that banquet," she said quietly. "Word's spreading fast."

I nodded. Good. Let it spread.

When we crossed into Silverfang territory, I felt the shift immediately — the way I always did. The land recognized me. My wolf lifted her head slightly, acknowledging home.

I parked outside the pack house. Reese got out first, then paused with her hand on the door.

"Sloan—"

"I'm fine," I said.

She looked at me for a long moment. Then she nodded and went inside.

I sat in the car alone. The engine ticked as it cooled. Through the windshield, I could see the pack house windows glowing warm against the darkness. Silverfang. Mine. Built by my hands, my decisions, my years of careful strategy.

Dante had never built anything in his life.

I got out and walked inside.

The pack house was quiet. Most of the wolves were either asleep or keeping a respectful distance. I went straight to my office on the second floor and locked the door behind me.

Then I allowed myself sixty seconds.

I braced both palms against my desk and breathed through the phantom burn still radiating from my neck. The bond's severance had left an echo — not pain exactly, but a wrongness, like a limb that had been amputated and still sent signals to a brain that couldn't process the absence.

My wolf snarled softly. *Good riddance.*

I straightened. Opened my laptop. And began pulling Ironclad's financial records.

I'd been funding Dante's pack for three years. Every territorial agreement, every infrastructure project, every patrol salary — all of it ran through Silverfang accounts. I had the documentation. All of it. Organized, dated, cross-referenced.

I worked until dawn.

---

Four days later, Dante called an emergency regional Pack Council.

Reese brought me the notification while I was reviewing supply chain contracts in my office. She set the official summons on my desk without a word.

I read it twice.

"He's moving fast," Reese said.

"He's panicking," I corrected.

The Pack Council was a formal gathering of Alphas from neighboring territories — a political mechanism designed to resolve disputes and maintain regional stability. Dante was invoking it to control the narrative before it spiraled beyond his reach.

Smart. Or it would have been, if he'd understood who he was dealing with.

"Are you attending?" Reese asked.

I looked up at her. "Are you?"

She smiled slowly. It wasn't a nice smile. "Wouldn't miss it."

---

The Council convened in neutral territory — a conference hall on the border between three pack lands. When Reese and I arrived, the space was already crowded. Alphas from six neighboring packs, their Betas and key enforcers, all gathered in a wide semicircle facing a raised platform.

Dante stood on that platform. Odin was beside him. Rosie was notably absent.

Every head turned when I entered. The room went quiet.

I walked to the front and took a seat in the section reserved for attending Alphas. Reese stood behind my chair, her posture relaxed but ready. I could feel her anticipation humming through the air between us.

Dante began speaking.

His voice was measured. Calm. He painted a picture of a possessive Luna who had clung obsessively to a bond that was never truly fated. He described Rosie's scent as his genuine mate-pull — something he'd tried to resist out of duty to the alliance, but that the Moon Goddess's will could not be denied forever. He spoke of Sloan's jealousy. Her instability. Her refusal to accept the divine truth.

Several smaller Alphas nodded. One murmured agreement.

I sat perfectly still and watched him perform.

He was good. I'd give him that. The lies were smooth, rehearsed, delivered with just enough vulnerability to seem sincere. He even managed to make his eyes look pained when he spoke about the rejection.

Beside me, Reese shifted her weight.

I didn't move.

Dante continued. He talked about regional stability. The importance of the alliance. How Sloan's impulsive rejection had endangered every pack in the Northwest.

"She acted out of wounded pride," he said, his voice carrying across the hall. "Not wisdom. Not duty. Pride."

More nods. The crowd was leaning his direction.

I waited.

Dante opened his mouth to continue—

And every wolf in the room went rigid.

It hit like a tidal wave through the mind-link broadcast relay — the Pack Council's communication channel that allowed all attending wolves to share information simultaneously. Except this wasn't Council business.

This was Reese.

Financial records flooded the shared consciousness. Patrol salaries paid by Silverfang. Infrastructure projects funded by Silverfang accounts. Territorial agreements signed with Silverfang's backing. Three years of documentation, timestamped and undeniable, showing Ironclad's complete dependence on my pack's resources.

Then came the audio.

Dante's voice, private and unguarded: *"She actually thinks I'm grateful. Like I owe her something."*

Rosie's laugh, light and contemptuous: *"She's pathetic. Walking around like she's doing us a favor."*

Dante again: *"The bond's useful. That's all. Once the Lycan King's inspection is done, we'll have enough legitimacy to stand on our own."*

The room erupted.

Alphas surged to their feet. Voices overlapped, shouting. Someone demanded to know if the recordings were authentic. Another Alpha turned on Dante directly, his wolf rising in his eyes.

Dante's face had gone white. He looked at me across the chaos.

I met his gaze and smiled.

It was a small smile. Cold. Final.

Reese leaned down and murmured near my ear, "I think that went well."

I stood. The movement cut through the noise somehow. Wolves turned to look at me.

I didn't address Dante. I addressed the Council.

"The Silverfang Pack is withdrawing all financial backing from Ironclad, effective immediately," I said clearly. "Any Alpha who wishes to continue territorial agreements with Silverfang may contact my Beta directly. This session is over."

I turned and walked out.

Behind me, the shouting intensified. I heard Dante's voice rising above the chaos, trying to regain control.

He wouldn't.

Reese caught up with me in the parking lot. Her grin was fierce and wild.

"That," she said, "was beautiful."

I got in the car. Started the engine.

The phantom burn in my neck had finally stopped.
