After My Mate Humiliated Me, the Lycan Prince Claimed Me
Chapter 4
I felt it at 6:12 in the morning.
I was mixing dye in the workshop when a sharp pain cut across my left shoulder. Not my pain. Someone else's, coming through the dead thread where the bond used to be. It felt like a bone trying to bend the wrong way and getting stuck.
Then it was gone.
I set down the dye bowl. My hands were steady. I made sure of that.
Elliot told me the rest two days later, standing in my doorway with his hands folded.
"Alpha Weaver tried to shift during morning training," he said. "In front of thirty wolves. He got halfway and couldn't finish."
"Halfway," I repeated.
"Jaw stretched. Spine bent. Fur on one arm. He stayed like that for almost a minute before he forced himself back." Elliot paused. "His Gamma told everyone it was a discipline exercise."
"Trevor Blake," I said. "Did they believe him?"
"Until lunch."
I went back to my ribbons. I didn't ask more. But that night I lay awake and thought about Liam's wolf. Big, dark grey, proud. I used to watch it run the border at dusk and wish mine would come out to meet it.
It wasn't poison making him sick. I knew that. Everyone with half a brain knew that. A rejection spoken in front of three hundred witnesses doesn't heal. It rots. He had said the words. Now the words were eating him.
I should have felt glad. Mostly, I felt tired.

The rumors came next.
They arrived the way Camila always worked. Softly. Sweetly. Like worry.
*Poor Liam. That girl seduced the Lycan Prince just to shame him.*
*It's a land grab, you know. The Crown wants Ironvale's territory.*
*A wolfless Omega breaking a fated bond? The Moon Goddess will punish her for it.*
*Kieran Ashford is just using a broken girl. Everyone can see it.*
In one week, the whispers reached three territories. Elliot brought me a list. He didn't comment on it. He didn't have to.
On the tenth day, he added one more line.
"It's reached your parents' den."
My pen stopped on the paper.
Of course it had. Camila didn't waste her breath on strangers. She aimed. My father believed in the pack the way some people believe in gravity. If anyone could pull him back toward Ironvale, it was a woman who sounded like she cared.
I looked down. Without noticing, I had drawn a door on the edge of my notes. Closed. Locked.
---
They came on a Thursday afternoon.
I heard the voices in the corridor first. Then the workshop door swung open without a knock.
Liam walked in like he owned the room. Trevor Blake followed, holding a folded paper. Camila stayed just behind them, near the doorframe. Her favorite spot.
"We're here for pack property," Trevor said. "The ceremony materials she took from Ironvale."
I had taken one bag. We all knew it.
Liam didn't even pretend. His eyes found mine, and his aura rolled out heavy and hot.
"Briana." Alpha tone. Easy. Lazy. The way you call a dog. "Come here. We need to talk."
For eight years, that voice had moved me across rooms. To dinners I didn't want. To corners where I waited.
I set my design knife down on the table. I laid the ribbon beside it, smooth and flat.
Then I looked at him. I didn't move. I didn't speak.
Something cracked in his face. Just a little. Like a man pressing a light switch and getting no light.
"I said," he started again, louder.
"Stop."
The word came from the doorway behind them.
Kieran stood there in a black shirt, sleeves rolled up. His voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. It hit the room like a weight dropped from the ceiling.
Liam froze mid-step. His back slammed against the wall. His arms locked at his sides. His jaw shook, but he couldn't open it.
Trevor dropped his paper. Camila pressed herself flat to the doorframe.
Kieran walked past all of them. He didn't hurry. He took a folded document from his pocket and dropped it on my table. The gold Lycan seal caught the light.
"The signed decree," he said. "In case anyone here forgot whose protection she's under."
He didn't look at Liam when he said it. That was worse than looking.
Liam made a sound in his throat. A growl. His body jerked. Then, with a tearing noise, he ripped free.
He lunged. His face stretched halfway into a muzzle. Fur burst along one arm. His spine bent wrong, the way I'd felt it bend in my own shoulder days ago. It was ugly. Desperate. Half a wolf, coming straight at Kieran.
Kieran's right hand changed.
Just the hand. Black claws slid out. Bones thickened under the skin.
His expression didn't change at all.
He caught Liam by the chest and threw him. Liam hit the doorframe so hard the wood split. He crashed through it into the corridor.
The fur fell off him like it had never been there. The muzzle shrank back. He landed hard on the stone floor, fully human, gasping.
Right at Camila's feet.
She stared down at him. She didn't kneel. She didn't reach for him.
Kieran's hand slid back to human. He flexed his fingers once.
Nobody spoke. Trevor didn't move. Liam lay there, chest heaving, looking at his own hands like they belonged to someone else.
The silence was so loud I could hear the sea.
And under my ribs, very softly, something inside me began to purr.
