Chapter 2

The pain didn't stop.

It kept tearing through me, wave after wave, like my body was trying to turn itself inside out. I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. The cold emptiness where the bond had been was spreading through my chest, freezing everything it touched.

Then something deeper moved.

It started in my bones. A heat that had nothing to do with the rejection. A pressure building under my skin, pushing outward with a force I couldn't control. I tried to hold it down. Tried to stay small, stay quiet, stay invisible the way I'd learned to survive.

But the wolfsbane that had kept my wolf buried for years was already cracking under the weight of the rejection's agony. And what lived beneath it had been waiting a long time.

My bones broke.

I heard them snap—ribs, spine, femur—each one a distinct crack that echoed in the silent hall. My muscles seized and reformed with violent speed. My skin burned. I opened my mouth to scream and what came out was a sound I'd never made before—low, primal, furious.

The shift happened in seconds.

One moment I was on my knees on the stone floor, human and broken. The next I was standing on four legs, and the world looked different. Sharper. Brighter. Every scent in the hall hit me at once—fear, shock, the acrid smell of Dallas's sudden uncertainty.

I was massive.

I could feel it in the way the air moved around me, in the way every wolf in the hall went rigid. My fur was silver-white, luminous even in the dim ceremonial lighting. And the aura that poured off me—

It wasn't an Omega's aura.

It was an Alpha's. Stronger than an Alpha's. Something ancient and sovereign that had been chemically suppressed for so long it erupted like a detonation the moment it was free.

Dallas's wolf whimpered.

I heard it. A small, involuntary sound from the Alpha-heir who had just rejected me. His body went tense. His eyes widened. Around the hall, Silverfang wolves began to bow. Not a formal bow. An instinctive one. Several pressed their necks bare in submission they couldn't control.

My scent flooded the room. Wild jasmine and winter frost. Undiluted. Undeniable. The scent I'd been burying under wolfsbane for years, the scent no one in this pack had ever smelled.

In the upper gallery, someone went very still.

I didn't look up. I was too focused on Dallas. On the way his composure was fracturing in real time. On Arielle behind him, her hand frozen on his arm, her face no longer arranged into sympathy but something closer to shock.

A voice spoke inside my head. Not mine. Mine. Both.

*Seraph.*

The name I'd given my wolf when I was thirteen, before the betrayal, before the wolfsbane, before I learned that having a wolf made you a target. The name I'd buried so deep I'd almost forgotten it.

She was awake now. And she was furious.

*They will bow,* she said, her voice like thunder inside my skull. *Or they will break.*

I didn't know how to answer her. Didn't know how to process the fact that I had a voice in my head that wasn't my own thoughts, that my body was a wolf's body, that the entire Silverfang Pack was on their knees because of an aura I couldn't control.

I shifted back.

It happened as violently as the first shift—bones cracking, muscles reforming, the silver-white fur receding into human skin. I collapsed onto the stone floor, naked and shaking, and someone threw a cloak over me. I didn't see who.

The hall was silent.

I pulled the cloak around myself and stood. My legs were unsteady. Everything hurt. But I stood.

Dallas was staring at me like he'd never seen me before. Like I was something that didn't fit into any category he understood.

I met his eyes. I didn't say anything. I just looked at him—the Alpha-heir who had mocked me three hours ago, who had rejected me ten minutes ago, who was now standing in front of a pack that had just watched his wolf submit to mine.

Then I turned and walked out of the hall.

No one stopped me.

---

I made it to the edge of the pack grounds before my knees gave out again.

I sat on the cold ground with my back against a tree and tried to breathe. Tried to process what had just happened. Tried to understand the voice in my head that wouldn't stop pacing.

*Seraph,* I thought. *You're really here.*

*I was always here,* she answered, her tone sharp. *You buried me. Poisoned me. Kept me dormant because you were afraid.*

*I was surviving.*

*You were dying,* she corrected. *Slowly. One wolfsbane drop at a time.*

I pressed my thumbnail into my wrist. The gesture didn't calm me the way it used to. Seraph noticed.

*Stop that,* she said. *You don't need to hurt yourself to feel something anymore. You have me.*

I didn't know if that was comforting or terrifying.

Footsteps approached. Steady. Unhurried. I looked up and saw a man I didn't recognize—tall, dark-haired, with an aura that made Seraph go very still inside me.

He stopped a few feet away and looked at me with eyes that were too calm, too knowing.

"You're Clementine Grant," he said. Not a question.

I pulled the cloak tighter. "Who are you?"

"Killian Voss." He said it like I should recognize the name. When I didn't react, he added, "Lycan Prince. Bloodmoon Dynasty."

I stared at him. A Lycan Prince. Here. At a pack ceremony in the middle of nowhere.

"What do you want?" I asked.

He crouched down so we were at eye level. His scent hit me—dark cedar and thunderstorm. Something about it felt familiar in a way I couldn't place. Seraph stirred.

"You're my fated mate," he said plainly. "My wolf recognized your scent years ago. I've been tracking you across territories."

The words landed like stones. I laughed. It came out bitter and sharp.

"I just got rejected by one mate," I said. "I'm not interested in another bond."

"I know," Killian said. His voice was calm. Too calm. "I'm not asking you to accept it. I'm telling you what you are to me. What you've been to me. That's all."

I looked at him—really looked at him. The Lycan Prince who had somehow been at the ceremony tonight. Who had watched my wolf awaken. Who was now crouched in front of me like we were having a normal conversation.

"Why are you here?" I asked.

"Because you needed a witness," he said simply.

Seraph growled low in my chest. Not at him. At the situation. At everything.

I stood up. Killian rose with me, giving me space.

"I don't need a mate," I said. "But I need a weapon."

His expression didn't change, but something in his eyes sharpened.

"Explain," he said.

I met his gaze. "You're a Lycan Prince. Your rank overrides every Alpha in that hall. Dallas just rejected me in front of everyone. Arielle's already spinning the story. They're going to bury me."

"And you want me to stop them," Killian said.

"I want you to destroy them," I corrected. "I want Dallas on his knees. I want Arielle's lies exposed. I want everyone who watched me get rejected to watch them fall."

Killian was quiet for a long moment. Then his lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile.

"What do I get in return?" he asked.

"An Alpha-blood wolf," I said. "Whatever political advantage that gives your dynasty. Whatever you need. I'll be your ally. Your weapon. Your asset. Just not your mate."

He studied me. I couldn't read his expression.

"Deal," he said finally.

I blinked. "Just like that?"

"Just like that," Killian agreed. He extended his hand. "I'll be your weapon, Clementine Grant. And you'll be mine."

I took his hand. His grip was warm and steady.

Seraph went quiet inside me. Not peaceful. Just… waiting.

Killian didn't let go right away. He looked at me with something I couldn't name.

"One more thing," he said.

"What?"

"When this is over," he said quietly, "and Dallas is on his knees, and Arielle's lies are ashes—ask me why I was really here tonight."

Then he released my hand and walked back toward the pack house, leaving me alone under the trees with a wolf in my head and a Lycan Prince's promise hanging in the air like smoke.
