Chapter 3

Four days after I filed the paperwork, I was pumping gas into a used sedan I'd bought for six hundred dollars with money Sienna's clinic had advanced me for a trial week of odd jobs.

The nozzle clicked in my hand. The November wind cut through my thin jacket. I kept my head down, counting the digits on the pump, thinking about the dinner I could afford if I skipped breakfast tomorrow.

And then I smelled him.

Pine and leather. The scent I had buried my face into a thousand times in that storage room behind the kitchens. The scent that used to mean safe, mate, home.

Silver growled inside me, low and furious.

*Steady,* I whispered to her. *Don't move.*

The black SUV rolled up on the other side of the pump. The driver's door opened. Boots crunched on gravel. I didn't look up.

"Kenna."

His voice was rougher than I remembered. Not the smooth Alpha tone from the ceremony. Something underneath it had cracked.

I kept my eyes on the pump.

"Kenna, look at me."

I finished pumping. Replaced the nozzle. Screwed the gas cap on slow and careful. Only then did I turn.

Bellamy looked terrible. His face was thinner. Dark circles bruised the skin under his eyes. He wore an expensive coat, but his hair was unkempt, and there was a kind of brittle readiness in the way he stood — like a man who had rehearsed this exact meeting in the mirror.

"You've been hard to find," he said. He tried for a smile. It didn't land.

"I wasn't trying to be found."

He flinched. Just a flicker. Then he recovered, pulling himself up into Alpha posture — shoulders back, chin lifted. The old armor.

"I've been thinking about you. Every day."

I said nothing.

"I know how the ceremony looked." His voice dropped. He stepped closer, lowering his tone like we were conspirators again. Like we were still in that storage room. "My mother forced my hand. Goldcrest's warriors — the territory issue — Kenna, I didn't have a choice."

Silver bared her teeth inside me.

"I want to take care of you," he said. "There's an apartment. Rogue territory, outside Briarwood. Nice building. Furnished. I'll pay for everything — rent, car, clothes, whatever you need." He wet his lips. "I can come see you. Weekends. Sometimes weeknights. No one has to know."

I stared at him.

The wind pulled at my braid. Somewhere behind us, a trucker was arguing with the clerk about cigarettes. The world kept moving, ordinary and loud, around this small frozen piece of it.

"You want to hide me," I said. "Again."

"I want to protect you."

"From what, Bellamy? Your pack already threw me out."

His jaw worked. "From the world. You're a rogue. You know what happens to rogue females. I'm offering you safety."

"You're offering me a cage with better sheets."

"Kenna—"

"Ten years." My voice stayed quiet. I didn't recognize how steady it was. "Ten years I slept on a cot in the Omega quarters and told myself the storage room meant something. Ten years I let your mother throw coffee at me because you were going to fix it. You were going to make it right."

"I will—"

"You married her."

He went still.

"You stood on that platform," I said, "with my scent still on you from the night before, and you put your hand on another woman's waist. And now you've driven out here to offer me the one thing I've already had for a decade — your shame."

"That's not—"

"I would rather starve as a rogue," I said, "than spend another night as your hidden shame."

The words landed clean. I felt them leave me and I felt him catch them, and his face did something I had never seen it do before. It cracked open. Just for a second. Something young and terrified underneath, a boy who had never once been told no by a woman who loved him.

I opened my car door.

"Kenna, wait—"

I got in. Closed the door. Started the engine. My hands did not shake.

I pulled out of the lot and I did not look in the rearview mirror. Not once. Not when Silver whispered *good* in my chest. Not when the gas station shrank behind me into a smear of fluorescent light.

I drove until my hands finally started shaking, then I pulled over in the parking lot of a closed bakery and pressed my forehead to the steering wheel and breathed.

I did not cry.

That was new.

---

That night I spread my mother's journal across the motel bed.

The leather was soft from handling. Pressed flowers crackled between the pages — yarrow, chamomile, bloodroot, nettle. My mother's handwriting curled across the margins in faded pencil. *For fevers that will not break. For wounds that weep. For grief that lives in the chest.*

I pressed my palm flat against my own sternum, the way she'd taught me when I was small.

*Listen,* Silver murmured.

I closed my eyes.

There — under my ribs — a faint, uneven rhythm. Not my heartbeat. Something slower. The old ache of the severed bond, pulsing like a bruise that had learned to breathe. I let my hand warm against it. Silver stirred, and a soft silver light I could feel but not see spread beneath my palm.

The ache eased. Just a little.

It was enough.

---

Sienna Blackwood watched me across her desk with pale, unreadable eyes.

She was in her fifties, lean and sharp, her gray-streaked hair pulled into a knot. The Briarwood clinic smelled of eucalyptus and clean linen. On the desk between us sat a small clay bowl of dried herbs she'd mixed without labels.

"Identify them," she said. "By scent alone."

I leaned forward. Closed my eyes.

"Mugwort," I said. "Valerian root. A little willow bark. And — " I breathed again. " — mountain arnica. Not local. You brought it in."

Her eyebrows lifted. The first expression I'd seen on her face.

"Hand," she said, and held out her wrist.

I hesitated, then pressed my palm against her pulse. Silver surged forward gently, listening the way my mother had taught me, and I felt it — a thin, tight knot of old pain behind Sienna's left shoulder, a joint that had been broken once and never set right.

"Your shoulder," I said quietly. "The left. It aches when it rains."

She pulled her hand back slowly.

For a long moment she just looked at me. Measuring. Weighing.

"Be here Monday at six," she said. "We have a lot of work to do."
