Chapter 5

My mother didn't explain the vial that night. She took it from the table, set it back in the cabinet, and locked it this time. Then she made tea neither of us drank and said goodnight like nothing had happened.

I let her.

Not because I was satisfied. Because I'd learned, over thirty years of being Elena Hayes's daughter, that some truths had to be approached sideways. Push too hard and she'd go quiet for days. Give her space and eventually the silence got heavier than she could carry.

I was good at waiting. I'd had a lot of practice.

The days settled into a rhythm after that. Mornings were for the legal work — Luna Accord violations, procedural challenges, the slow architecture of a case that had to be airtight before I filed it anywhere. Afternoons were for the news from Ironveil, which kept arriving in small, ugly pieces. Evenings were harder to account for.

Kieran stayed. He didn't make a production of it. He was simply there — at the table when I needed a second set of eyes, at the window when I needed to think out loud, absent when I needed the cabin to myself. He had a talent for reading the room that I hadn't expected from a man trained to command them.

One evening he set something on the table between us without comment.

A small carved wolf. Rough work, the proportions slightly off, one ear higher than the other. The kind of thing a child makes when they're more enthusiastic than skilled.

I looked at it for a long moment.

I knew that carving. I knew it the way you know a scar — not because you look at it often, but because it's yours and some part of you never forgets.

I picked it up. Turned it over once. Set it back down.

Neither of us spoke. But I felt the mate bond shift — not pulling, not demanding, just present, warm and steady the way a fire is when you're not standing close enough to burn. Kieran's scent, dark cedar and frost lightning, deepened slightly in the quiet room. My own — winter jasmine, that new bright thing I was still getting used to — answered it without my permission.

I pressed my thumbnail into my palm and looked at the legal papers instead.

But I didn't move the wolf off the table.

The mind-link came two nights later, around midnight.

Faint. Careful. Like someone testing ice before putting their weight on it.

Dara Voss.

I'd known Dara for three years — senior warrior, pack healer, the kind of woman who recorded everything in a private ledger because she'd learned early that verbal agreements with Alphas had a way of becoming inconvenient memories. She'd gone quiet after my rejection. I hadn't blamed her. Callahan's Alpha tone could make even the most principled wolf's voice disappear.

She spoke fast, her mental voice low and pressed close, like she was worried about being overheard.

Three fund transfers. All signed by Callahan. All routed to accounts connected to Sienna's rogue ex-mate's blood debt. The healer supply diversion — bandages, tonics, warrior-grade medicinals — redirected to the Luna's quarters over six weeks. She'd documented every entry. Dates, amounts, Callahan's authorization signature on each one.

She would testify. If sovereign jurisdiction overrode the Alpha tone. If the tribunal's summons gave her legal cover to speak.

I kept my voice steady. Told her to keep the ledger somewhere Callahan couldn't access it. Told her to wait for the summons and not to contact me again until it arrived. Then I ended the link before it could be traced back through the pack network.

I sat in the dark for a minute after.

Then I added Dara Voss's testimony to my case file and went back to work.

The news that Callahan was coming reached me through Kieran, who got it from Marcus, who had apparently been monitoring Ironveil's internal communications with the quiet efficiency of someone who'd done it before and expected to do it again.

Callahan had assembled a retinue. Small — six warriors, not a war party. He was framing it as a duty call. Scarlett Hayes, technically still a non-transferred former pack member. Pack stability. His responsibility as Alpha.

I read the summary Marcus handed me and felt something go very still in my chest.

Not fear. I was past fear where Callahan was concerned. What I felt was colder and more precise — the specific clarity that comes when you've been waiting for something and it finally moves.

Kieran was watching me from across the table.

'He's coming here,' I said.

'Yes.'

'To collect me.'

'That's what he thinks.' His voice was even. Unhurried. But something behind his eyes had gone very dark, and I noticed, not for the first time, that when Kieran went still like that — completely, absolutely still — it was the same quality of stillness as a held breath before a storm.

I set the report down. Looked at the carved wolf still sitting at the edge of the table where I'd left it three days ago.

'Let him come,' I said.
